Twenty-Three

1985 Words

Mia Back in his stupid apartment that I had actually come to love, I dished up the dinner I spent all day working on while Kai smoked a cigarette outside—a habit I was pretty surprised by and wondered what our parents thought of—and Pierce did whatever the hell he was doing in his room. If I had been more comfortable with my brother, I might have gone outside and smoked with him. But instead I said we could talk after we ate, because I didn’t want the awesome meal to go to waste.             “It’s ready,” I called, not really caring if either of them joined me.              But Kai came back inside, and Pierce came out of his room, getting two beers from the fridge, handing one to Kai. We all sat at the island, and they started eating, but it turned out I had lost my appetite entirely.
