Chapter 5
I hope this is not dullsville!!!, Barry thought.
He was hoping life was not going to be boring in New Sumer.
He knew that his parents moved into New Sumer, was partly because they wanted to get away from the big city.
They always talked about towns and the countryside being more peaceful and quite. Or that crime rates were much lower.
They were right about the air seeming more fresher.
He looked out the window, until Abby came back with his order.
“If there is anything else you would like to have, let me know!!” Abby said to him in low monotone.
He asked her for a bottle of ketchup.
Abby left his table for a while and then returned back to his table with a bottle of ketchup.
She left him to enjoy his meal.
He opened the bottle of ketchup and poured the sauce over his fries.
He took a handful of fries and dunked them into his mouth.
As Barry kept munching his food, he heard and saw someone walking through the front entrance of the diner.
He could tell who it was, judging by the uniform.
It was the town’s chief-of-police.
Barry started thinking about all the movies he had seen, where a new person comes into town and that the local chief-of-police or the town sheriff would interrogate him.
Barry’s heart was racing a bit.
The chief-of-police was walking towards his direction.
Towards his table.
Barry gave the chief-of-police a smile.
Like a practised fake smile.
From where he was sat, he could tell a lot about the officer heading his way.
He was a plus-sized balding middle-aged man, with blue gray eyes.
The chief-of-police finally reached his table.
I hope I didn’t get in any sort of trouble!!!!, Barry thought.
The chief-of-police looked at him straight in the eye.“You the Norton kid who just moved in here???” asked the chief-of-police.
“Yeah that’ll be me!!” chuckled Barry.
The chief-of-police gave him a dead serious look.
“Since you’re new here, I’ll cut you some slack!!” said the chief-of- police in an ‘I-mean-business’ kind of tone.
“O.K!!??” was all Barry could respond.
“Like I said before. You are new in our town!! I came all the way here to give you a warning!!” said the chief-of-police in a very serious tone.
“Warning???” cried Barry.
The chief-of-police told him about what happened last year during Halloween. He told them about the deaths of some high school football players and their cheerleader girlfriends when they decided to go party by themselves in the woods. And that they were killed by a pack of cougars too.
The kids who got killed were the most popular kids from school.
Kids just like Barry.
Or his ex-clique.
“My advice to you is to steer clear of the woods.....” warned the chief-of-police, “.......because you could be next!!!”
