The early morning sun filtered into the room as Maple stirred awake. She stayed on the bed for a while, staring at the ceiling as she thought about everything that had happened since her graduation.
The news about getting married.
Meeting Devon.
The Civil Affairs Bureau.
And now, she was married to the country’s ruthless billionaire.
Maple wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn’t come. She thought about her mother’s things back at the place that no longer felt like home. Those were the only things she had left of her mother, and she wasn’t going to leave them behind.
She finally got up, spent a few minutes in the bathroom, and got dressed. As she fixed her hair, she wondered how she was going to tell her new husband that she wanted to go out.
The mansion was quiet. Her footsteps echoed across the marble floor as she made her way down the hallway to the dining room.
Devon was already there.
He sat at the table, his black hair styled neatly back, dressed in a black tailored suit with his sleeves buttoned perfectly. He looked completely at ease as he drank his coffee.
He looked up when she entered, raising an eyebrow slightly.
Maple swallowed.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning,” he replied before returning his attention to his phone.
Maple sat stiffly as the maids served her breakfast. They brought a little of everything—eggs, toast, pastries, and coffee.
“Did you sleep well?” Devon asked.
Maple almost choked on her coffee. She hadn’t expected him to speak to her.
“Y-yes, I did.”
Devon returned to his phone as though he hadn’t just asked her a question.
The silence between them wasn’t as uncomfortable as it had been yesterday. It was still quiet, but there was something less tense about it.
Maple glanced around the dining room. Everything looked expensive and carefully arranged. Nothing was out of place. It was difficult to imagine anyone actually living in a place like this.
Devon seemed perfectly comfortable with it.
He sure had good taste, she thought.
After finishing her breakfast, Maple dropped her spoon onto the plate. She hesitated for a moment before finally speaking.
“Um… Devon?”
He looked up.
“I would like to know if I could go home today.”
“For?”
“I need to take my mother’s things,” she replied.
Devon stared at her for a moment, his expression calm. There was a slight flicker of amusement in his eyes.
“Take the driver with you.”
“Um… I can go on my own.”
“I didn’t ask if you could go on your own. Pick any car you want.”
Before Maple could respond, he stood up and walked away.
She stared after him.
“So bossy,” she muttered.
She quickly finished her breakfast and headed upstairs to get dressed.
She really hoped there wouldn’t be any issues today. All she wanted was to get her mother’s things and leave.
