Chapter 5: Left In The Dark

Chapter 5 Scarlett Whenever dad was mad, he cooked and prepared mostly dinner for us. Then we discuss whatever issues we had over dinner. With anger and steam we eat the food he prepared for us, then I do not know why he did that. Or why did he choose the kitchen of all places to express his anger? I noticed that most times, he was relieved by so much of that anger. Now, he doesn't want a bottle of scotch, nor does he want to scurry to the kitchen and relieve some of that anger. I was receiving every heat of his anger, raw and varnished. I looked for ways to avert this conversation, even when I wanted it to happen. I tried to get distracted but there was nothing, his voice he heed through like a trumpet blasting my ear drums. "You don't get to zone out, young lady." He began. "When I ask a question, you answer me." "What was the question Dad?" "Why would you run off like that, distracting me before that child that calls himself the Alpha son." It was the noticeable pride in his voice I didn't get. He was the one that clamoured for us to be there at all cost. It was almost like he regarded them with so much respect and now, his voice was empty. Only disgust and pride so high that he wouldn't reach for his own feet. "I don't know, Dad. Maybe if you just find out the person you've not seen or doesn't even care about is your mate, maybe you'd understand why I had to run off like that and clear my head." I retorted. Noah cringed every time I gave an answer. He wasn't one to talk back to dad. He was a good son and that was why he was still sticking around Dad even after so many years of dictating our lives for us. Noah tried to communicate with me through his eyes but I avoided them at all cost. "Fine, maybe it was overwhelming for you. But just maybe you paused to think why I thought you there in the first place." There were too many shades to the story, I still felt there was something that was being kept from me. The truth was so heavy that only his eyes could tell it, his mouth was still sealed dancing around the bush, looking for other things to be mad at. "Yes, Dad. Maybe. So why don't you tell us why you forced me to come with you, when you clearly knew I never wanted to be there?" I boldly asked. "Is there anything I need to know?" I switched eye contacts between Dad and Noah but this time Noah avoided mine. It was what gave him away, if he didn't want to say anything it was because he was not allowed to. "So there is something?" "See, darling." He drew out a barstool and sat close to me. He tried to reach out but I retreated immediately. "This mating thing is a new development but originally you were betrothed to Andres. It was a favour I did for his father, an oath I swore long ago." "Wow! Dad! You sold me to him even before I became an Adult. Is this supposed to be legal" I stood up in anger. "That's being selfish. How could you do that to me Dad?" Noah was already tired and I could see that he wanted to leave us to confuse ourselves even more. I was oblivious to the fact that Dad could do that to Ms, to sell me off to the late Alpha like some kind of trophy for being who he is. It was that confidence that Andres was preying on, there was nothing Dad would do about it. He wasn't prepared to let it go. "I didn't think I would have to do that when his father was Dad because I was going to blur the idea in the council." "Why should it matter to the council?" "He needs Luna, if he should be Alpha. I was able to stop the idea from being an option." If he thought that was going to stop the idea from ever coming up, then he was joking. It was the reason I stayed away. Every pack in the city had their beliefs but it wasn't as tough as ours, ours was looking more like a cult. The more blood was shared, the more glory we attain. It was glaring before everyone's eyes but no one could do anything about it. "Why do you think when you never participated in anything in the pack, I didn't force you then until now." "The Alpha was alive then, so you kept me away." "Yes I did it to protect you." "Please Dad, don't you think I'm protected now? Now you just fed me to the lions. They would want to know why you are stopping this from happening. Andres would be interested more, that's how much of a predator he is. He wouldn't let things go easily." Andre's was resilient, that was how he was able to change things around the pack. I didn't think I would be able to see him until now. Now things are just more complicated, I still wasn't getting a huge chunk of the story. I could feel it and there's no doubt that Andres was coming here to give me the full story. To lure me back into his arms because now I'm his mate. Even if I was not going to be his betrothed, I was his mate. There was no escaping that.. "That's why you will reject him to escape him fully. If you reject him, there would be no use for him to run after you." "Come on Dad! Don't you think this is already too much for her to take?" Noah chipped in, pained. The idea of rejecting him just set my head on fire. I could hear even though amplified and there was no way of getting out. My chest started burning as I sought for breath, my inside was tightening. It was strange because we just found out that I was his mate. The connection was not supposed to be this strong. I left their presence just having anything else to say. It was obvious that everything he had said had already been deliberated on. I couldn't imagine that in a matter of hours my life was already falling apart. I stormed into my room where Nicole was waiting for me, she saw my eyes swollen. There was no doubt that I had been crying on my way up here. She quickly spread her arms as I peeped in her embrace. "It's okay, honey. Everything would be fine, there is no doubt about that." How? I couldn't find my voice because there was nothing to say anymore. I felt like filth just by thinking about the previous conversation we had. I felt the world slowed in it's own way, my body slowed along with time as I stayed in the trance of my childhood. The fact that I was living freely only for me to realise that I was nurtured as a present to someone I haven't met then, until now. I was being nurtured as a present for someone's son, an alpha I barely know. Someone I won't probably like in the future, it was clear, my life was doomed. Nicole was still consoling me, trying to distract me from my own dangerous thoughts. She said something about seeing the light in all this but I wasn't seeing it. I didn't understand the optimism, why she was so optimistic even when there wasn't a way out. My ringtone distracted me from my thoughts. I picked my phone beside me seeing who it was. It was Jake, the man I was currently in love with.
