Scarlett POV
My heart was pounding. Should I or not pick the call? It was the only question that echoed in my head. While I was home, Jake has been trying to tie loose ends with his previous job so we could move in together. So sometimes he comes to the city to be with me then goes back. He was my ticket out of this life, my only shot at stability, at normalcy. I didn't want anything to tie me to being a wolf or be part of a pack. I didn't want Nothing to stop me from doing the best I can to give myself happiness.
Now my fate has disrupted my plans for a normal life.
"Are you going to take the call?" Nicole asked. Her question was mainly an urge to do the right thing and take the call but I had nothing to say. "If you do not pick his call, it's not going to make him worry. "
"What do I say?"
"You do not have to tell him anything right now, just listen to what he has to say. "
I answered the call.
"Hey babe! How are you?" I forced a smile and exhaled just by listening to his voice. It was his excitement that kept me glued to this conversation.
"I'm doing…doing fine. Just been swamped with work."
"Yeah, how are things at the company? Are you close to finishing all of your tasks there?"
"Yeah, I still have a lot to do here in the company. Most of the deals they are into are a mess."
I could already picture What he was doing as he was speaking. His expressions and reaction to what I have said. That's was the thing between us, it was easy. I wasn't stressed that often to want to question his thoughts about me.
"Okay, I have good news. I'm here in California, I got a job a month ago. I flew in for the interview and I got the job in no time." My heart's rhythm slowed when he started talking at first until this news spiked my heart rate up again. I stared at Nicole with a panicked face.
"Errmm, slow down Jake. What do you mean you are in California?"
"I do not think there is a more clearer way to say that. I am in California, but very far from where you live. It is just 2 hours to get to where you are, if we use the train. I work in California now, so I would be closer to you."
"For how long have you been planning on this?" I stood up and started pacing my room. I have always imagined myself as the one that was going to move out of my city and stay with him. I wanted an out and that was my chance, I didn't think I did anything to jeopardise that.
"For a long time. I just wanted to be certain before I told you. What's wrong? You don't sound too happy about it."
"No, no. I'm very happy, I am just surprised, that's all. I thought I was the one that was going to fall in love with you, you know. Just as we talked about, so I'm shocked that you flew down here all of a sudden."
"Trust me, I gave it every rational thought. It seemed like the right thing to do…no. It is the right thing to do. Whatever plans we have made, we can make it right here close to each other without much doubt sitting in my mind. I'm tired of the way we used to be, I want to be close to you and not have to worry about the distance. I love you babe and that's all that matters."
We talked for a while before I hung up the phone. I stared into blank suave for a while as I heard my name echoed at the back of my head.
"What is it, Scarlett? You are scaring me." She nudged me. I could feel the emptiness building up against me as I tried to find the words to answer her question.
"Jake is in California, two hours out from San Diego. Apparently, he got a well paying Job here, he is just two hours away from us." I gulped the limp in my throat as my mouth was dry, still searching for the words inside me. "I think he has settled down already, he's just waiting on a visit from me or the other way round."
Just when I was thinking about telling him that I might not be able to be with him, for some reason I would not be able to tell him because that was a secret I have felt for a while. I intend to keep those secrets to protect him from the dangers of this world. It was already bad enough that I included Nicole, I do not want him to be the next on my list. Anything could happen, something that we might not bargain for. Now, do I hide all of these things without him not seeing the action for himself? How do I hide from all this and still be with Jake.
That was my only concern.
"Things got complicated. What are you going to do? Are you going to tell him the truth?" Nicole reviewed me with pitiful eyes.
"I think this is the end for me and for us. It is for his safety."

It was a hard time having to sleep with all of that in my mind. I medveda plan that would not burn me later on. I tried to think of ways to manage the situations and I had narrowed it down to just one thing. It wasn't something that I loved, I didn't think I was going to see him again but there was nothing else I can do to keep things down.
I breathed as I stared at the familiar door. The door I walked right in without knowing what was going on at first. I was at the house of a man I do not like. My heart throbbed every second I kept wasting there, just staring and wondering what I was going to do next. I stretched my hands about to knock when the door opened.
"Well, well, well. If it isn't the runaway mate. I am beginning to think of when you would come visiting. I had to make a decision between coming over and letting you come to me. Here you are, in front of my door, taking your time to actually knock."
I gritted my teeth because I couldn't handle anymore of his cockiness. It was pissing me off yet it was taking everything not to jump in his embrace. I blinked the image away from my vision."Good morning to you too."
"Are you not going to come in?"
"No, this is not going to take long." I exhaled. He was looking like someone who just stepped out of a magazine. There was something about him that felt dreamy and comforting. I didn't like that he was doing this to me. The bond was only getting stronger and stronger every second I wasted standing in his presence. It was draining.
"I do not want to be your mate. My father told me how I was your betrothed for a long time and I wasn't aware of it. If you've noticed you haven't seen me in any of the pack activities because I hate participating in them. I do not want any of this, I know how hard it is to reject someone a bit since you do not want any of this too that might be the best option."
He chuckled hard as he ran his hands on his brown hair, allowing it to be one more untamed. "You are one funny lady,so you know that?" I felt stupid as his question made me rethink what I had just said to him.
"I do not think you understand what's going on here." He started. "It is possible that you didn't get the details, or you were being kept from me. I knew about you for a long time but I wasn't ready for that yet, I wasn't ready for you. I wanted to build a strong pack that would be befitting of my betrothed. I was willing to let you go then but now that the moon has fated us to be together, I won't even think of letting you go."
Fear started wrapping his strings around me. He was only acting just as I imagined. He was not an easy man to penetrate,he would shake the world just to get what he wanted.
"It just doesn't mean anything now. Why are you doing this?" He came down from the stairs that was a bridge between the both of us. He had a smug smile on his face, he lifted up his finger as he brought them up to my cheeks. His hands were so warm regardless of the cold weather.
"Maybe I should spell it out for you, amore. I am not going to reject you, it is mkt an option. We are bonded for life, I'm never letting you go."
