Scarlett POV
If there was anything I hated more was the Idea of too much power sitting in the hands of people who certainly are going to misuse it.
Dad always spoke highly of the Alpha but all that was seen was what's his iron fist he used to rule the land. There are a lot of things that were going on underground with the late Alpha and the rest.
We always tried our best to stay out of it. The moment we got involved, it was because our services were required. We were having breakfast when Dad thought it was the best time to make an announcement.
"We would be going to the pack house today, to sympathise with them. Sarclett you are coming with me."
I growled immediately. My fist was already balled on the table. I had lost my appetite, suddenly. Dad glared at me because I was breaking one of the table rules. He had this rule since we were kids where we exhibit no animal instincts while we were eating. It was a hassle when we were younger but even now, it was still a major rule.
"Dad, you know how well I hate partaking in such activities. You are one of the respected people he had while he was still alive, so it is your duty not mine"
"When you lost your mother, The Late Alpha and his family were of great help to us."
"So we are returning the favour? How nice."
Tristan, who was sitting next to me, trying to get out of the conversation, stared at me with a cute smile which could only mean mockery."I just want to stay home while I run these documents over with you."
"You can always turn those documents in with him." He was supposed to be backing me up here but I glared at him.
"You of all people know how important this document is…"
"That can wait, niña. We would leave at noon." Dad just finished his breakfast, he stood to kiss me on my cheeks.
The company has been struggling and if we didn't think of something as fast as possible, we might have a real problem at our hands. Tristan and I have tried to avoid most of these things but it seemed something or someone was putting loopholes in all of our deals. Dad didn't know this, the urgency of the situation. It was something that we could no longer hold again.
I was nineteen when Dad started putting me into the business little by little. I got a Honda for business when I clicked 21 and that was my birthday gift. He made me the level adviser of the company and a seat in the board of Directors. This was like a dream come true, something I never thought was going to happen. I remember that my brothers didn't look surprised because Dad ran it with them. Four of them were doing their own thing, in charge of one thing or the other. He trusted us to keep growing the company, if there was anything that couldn't be handled immediately, he always stepped in.
I sighed. I don't know how I'm going to break the news to my father. Tristan was concerned and he stretched his hands from across the table to reach for my hands.
"It will all be fine. I guess we are concerned because we need to avoid it if it comes. I don't think the company is going to suffer a great loss because of some little loophole."
Tristan has always been the one closest to me. Right from when we were kids, he stopped me from getting bullied and always decided to accompany me to school. Not just that we did have some fun time together and he was always the first I came to when I was confused about anything. That was exactly my anger even though he chose to interfere in our conversation.
"That's the thing. I don't think there's any straw left to hold the remains of the company. Everything is linked and if we don't find a solution our losses might be more than we can handle."
"We will figure it out. But for now, let's just do what he says."
The rest of our brothers were scattered across the country and the world. It would be lovely if we all were together so we could think of a way forward. Handel and Nath are in another country handling one of Dad's businesses. Nathan cut himself off from the family a long time ago, according to him there was something he couldn't handle that was going to ruin us all. He said a lot of things that were still foreign to me.
Griselda, the head staff, ushered some maids to clear out the table as she smiled at me. "How are you , baby?"
"Fine just tired." She narrowed her eyes on me. Griselda knew I was lying but she didn't push. She had been taking care of us since we were little. I guess shepaud more attention to Tristan and I than the rest of them. She was that mother I never had. Then, there were some things that were still classified but she kept her distance when she noticed.
For some stupid reason, there was this excitement that kept fluttering inside me. I was excited to go to the Pack house. I wondered why I would have such feelings when I have always hated going there from the start. There was this dark aura that binds the walls of the pack house. Now, I wasn't feeling that way, I actually was feeling like it was a good idea for me. Strange.
"What's wrong with you Scarlett? Put yourself together." I scolded myself as I stared at the mirror. It was almost noon, and I began to get ready. I thought of dressing elegantly like always but then I remembered that it was a funeral and I didnt want to look suspicious, if anything should go wrong.
***
The feeling of a funeral has always been a calming one for me. When I think of when my uncle died and how he hated me for no reason. He always implied that I wasn't a part of the family, Noah hated him for it . Dad stopped it from coming, I tried to sneak in into one of their co conversations but I'm always ratted out.
When he died, there was this breath of fresh air that we all had, most especially me. It was the same feeling I had as I stepped inside the pack house. I haven't seen the current Alpha since, I didn't know what he looked like. I had no memories coming to any festivals or rituals that included the Alpha being around. I only knew the late one, which was probably his father.
We waited in the living room with a glass of wine in my hands when Tristan said.
"What do you think the new Alpha is like?"
"How do I know? He might be ugly like the beast that accompanied Emma Watson in the movie."
Tristan laughed. "Very funny. You should be careful. There are some people that have a gift of listening. You can be taken into custody for taking ill about the Alpha."
I scoffed. The pack house was swarmed with people that didn't care about the Alpha bloods but more of their political interest. It was here you find the most pretentious bastards that would do anything you want.
"Do you know how the Alpha Died?"
"Some said he was laced with poison. Others said that it was probably one of the enemies that he had gained over time, one of them associated him in his home. There are several.theories but if you asked him, I just feel Karma is just doing its job."
He shrugged, I nodded. The house was getting scanty and it was already getting late. I didn't understand why we weren't leaving yet or were we going to sympathise with them by living with them now?
I was infuriated. When I saw Dad coming into the house from the spacious entrance. I quickly walked up to him and Noah was trying to stop me.
"Are we not leaving anytime soon or are we going to help them with some chores for the final funeral rites?"
"Scarlett?" Noah scolded me as he stood behind me.
He kept a straight face and his body became a little tense but he composed himself later. "We are just going to wait for the Alpha to arrive. We have been running things with him since."
"Does that include me because I'm good?". I gritted. Rage was vibrating inside of me already. He drew me closer and kissed me in my hair.
"No matter what happens just know that I love you. He will soon be out okay."
He walked off to greet some of his colleagues at the end of the hall. I was about to take a drink from one of the waiters walking around when someone stumbled into me. A woman in her mid fifties but she dressed in black with a hoodie covering her face. "I'm so sorry." I apologise for spilling the drink on her.
"No worries." She didn't mind. I saw that she dropped her purse, so I bent over to help her take it. She grabbed my hands and her touch felt so cold.
"Your wheel of your fate is going to take a huge spin. Your life would change after this." She took the purse from me and just left. There was this fear that gripped me after she left, I couldn't just shake off the feeling. "Weird."
Father stood close to me and it was a sign that the Alpha was coming. My body began to boil and the scent that was heading towards this place was terrific, yet enticing. It was mixed with the nice smell of an expensive perfume.
I noticed that the house was empty. It was just us. Something didn't feel right. This nice scent was the best feeling about the weirdness that surrounded us.
I started growling. Then I saw him, he was like giving ancestral wealth, like God,like my mate. We immediately shared a connection that was imprinted inside my blood. Dad glanced at me as Noah was holding me. They were not surprised. I breathe and calm down. I just wanted to run to him, nothing more, nothing else mattered.
Then I heard him say, "My mate."
