4. Warning In The Dark

1335 Words
That night, Alexa returned to the campus library. The endless pile of coursework compelled her to put in extra hours of study. Although a part of her hesitated, haunted by the strange events she had previously experienced, she had no choice. Some reference books were only available in the library, and nighttime was her only free window. The library’s silence felt eerie, amplified by the cold, biting night air. Rows of towering bookshelves stood like dark, unyielding walls, forming narrow corridors that gave the illusion of stepping into another dimension. Alexa paused in her tracks, her unease nearly overwhelming her courage. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Yet, the image of the mysterious girl with the hollow stare flashed through her mind. “I can’t give up,” she told herself. “I’m here for my assignment, not to dwell on strange occurrences.” Determined, she pushed forward. After a brief search, Alexa found the section housing the books she needed. The long-haired girl, who often tied her hair back in a ponytail, quickly immersed herself in her work. But that unsettling sensation of being watched crept over her once more. It felt as though a pair of unseen eyes followed her every move, lurking in the darkness at the end of the corridor. Alexa tried to shake off the feeling, but curiosity gnawed at her. Glancing toward the corridor every so often, she saw only emptiness. Dismissing her unease, she decided to find another book that might aid her assignment. Her steps were slow and tentative as she wandered through the aisles. The air grew colder, prickling her skin with unease. She stopped momentarily, leaning against a bookshelf, trying to steady her breathing. “It’s just my imagination,” she whispered to herself, though her voice was barely audible. As she turned back to face the shelf, a chilling sensation brushed against the back of her neck, like a cold breath. Her body tensed. She rubbed her neck instinctively, glancing around. No one was there. Spotting the book she needed, Alexa reached for it, only to find it perched on the highest shelf. Being petite in stature, she stood on tiptoe, stretching her arm as far as it would go. After several unsuccessful attempts, she considered retrieving the ladder tucked in the corner, but laziness got the better of her. Just as she was about to give up, a hand appeared from behind and effortlessly grabbed the book for her. “Here,” a warm voice offered from behind her. Startled, Alexa spun around. A soft, woody scent enveloped her—one she instantly recognized. “Jimmy? You again? Thanks,” she said with a mix of relief and surprise, accepting the book from the tall, handsome figure standing before her. Jimmy smiled faintly, his gaze kind yet enigmatic. “You always seem to forget there’s a ladder, don’t you?” “Uh, not really forget, just... too lazy,” Alexa admitted with an awkward grin. She clutched the book tightly, her curiosity about him bubbling to the surface. “By the way, why do you hang out here so often? It seems like I always run into you in the library.” Jimmy chuckled softly. “Just a coincidence. I’m working on research for my thesis.” “But you always show up just when I need help. Is that a coincidence too?” Alexa narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing his expression. “Maybe I have a knack for being in the right place at the right time,” he replied with a cryptic smile. Alexa huffed in mild frustration. “You’re so full of mystery, Jimmy. I don’t even know much about you. What’s your major, anyway?” Jimmy sat down on the floor, leaning casually against a bookshelf. “Medicine, final semester. Working on my research has been exhausting, honestly. There are times I feel like giving up, but…” He paused, locking eyes with her. “…seeing your determination keeps me motivated.” Flustered, Alexa looked away. “Don’t look at me like that, Jimmy. It makes me uncomfortable.” Jimmy let out a warm laugh, his voice soothing. “Sorry, I was just being honest.” Hoping to divert the topic, Alexa asked, “But if you’re in medicine, shouldn’t you spend more time in the lab than the library?” “This library has rare books I need for my research, so I come here often,” he explained casually, though Alexa felt there was more he wasn’t saying. Jimmy shifted the conversation. “Speaking of mysteries, are you still curious about the strange things on campus?” Alexa nodded hesitantly. “Of course, but I have to finish my assignment first. Once that’s done, I’ll definitely dig deeper.” Jimmy’s lips curved into a faint smile, though a shadow of sadness flickered across his face. Alexa noticed the shift but chose not to press him. “Jimmy,” she asked softly, “do you believe in the supernatural?” Jimmy shrugged. “I believe when it’s backed by experience. Why? Have you been through something else?” Alexa hesitated before replying, “Not exactly… I just get this feeling sometimes, like something’s watching me here.” Jimmy’s gaze darkened slightly. “If that’s the case, be careful, Alexa. There are things in this world that defy logic.” His words made her heart race. “This place always feels... wrong,” Alexa whispered, her voice barely audible. “It’s like something doesn’t want me here.” Jimmy stopped walking, his intense gaze locking onto hers. “Maybe you should trust your instincts, Alexa. Some places aren’t meant to be disturbed.” Alexa’s jaw tightened. “But I need to know, Jimmy. I can’t just ignore it. Something’s happening here, and I’m going to find out what it is.” Jimmy exhaled heavily, his eyes drifting toward the shadowy shelves. “Be careful what you wish for. Not all answers bring peace.” A loud crash interrupted them, echoing through the library. The shelves groaned as though something moved between them. Alexa froze, her body paralyzed with fear. She glanced toward the sound, catching a fleeting, shadowy figure darting away too quickly to identify. “What was that?” she whispered, her voice trembling. Jimmy stepped closer, his body shielding hers. “We need to leave,” he said firmly, gripping her arm. Before they could move, the library’s lights began to flicker, one by one dimming until only faint shadows stretched across the floor. Alexa’s breathing grew labored, the air around them turning icy and oppressive. Suddenly, a sinister giggle pierced the silence, high-pitched and bone-chilling. Alexa whipped her head around, but the room was empty. Clinging tightly to Jimmy’s arm, her face turned ashen. “Jimmy, what’s going on?!” “Alexa, close your eyes. Don’t look at anything,” he commanded urgently. “I can’t!” Alexa cried, her voice cracking. “What’s happening, Jimmy?!” Before he could answer, a cold, clammy sensation gripped her shoulder, sending a jolt of terror through her. Her vision blurred, darkness consuming her as she collapsed into Jimmy’s arms. When she regained consciousness, Alexa found herself lying on an old library sofa. Mr. Albert, the librarian, stood nearby, his expression a mix of concern and something she couldn’t quite place. “Are you alright, Miss Alexa?” he asked, his tone both curious and wary. Alexa sat up, her head throbbing. “Jimmy… where’s Jimmy?” Mr. Albert frowned. “There’s no one here but you, Miss.” “That’s impossible! I was with him—Jimmy!” Alexa insisted, her voice rising. Mr. Albert sighed, his face hardening. “Perhaps you should rest, Miss. This place isn’t always kind to those who seek too much.” His cryptic words sent a chill down Alexa’s spine, but one thing was clear: tomorrow, she would uncover the truth about Jimmy—and the secrets this campus held.
