The palace shook.
Dust fell from the ceiling as a deep rumble traveled through the walls.
Lyra stood frozen in the corridor, her silver mark glowing brighter with every passing second.
Kael kept his sword raised.
“Stay behind me.”
This time, Lyra listened.
The guards around them drew their weapons, but none of them looked confident.
The voice had disappeared.
Yet its presence remained.
Something was awake beneath the palace.
Something old.
Something that recognized her.
A sudden crack split the floor.
Lyra screamed as silver light burst through the stone.
Kael grabbed her waist and pulled her away just before the floor collapsed.
“Move!”
They ran.
The palace guards rushed after them, shouting orders.
But Lyra couldn't stop staring at the light beneath them.
It was beautiful.
Terrifying.
And somehow familiar.
As they reached the eastern wing, the palace doors slammed shut behind them.
Silence.
Kael lowered his sword.
“Are you hurt?”
Lyra shook her head.
“No.”
He studied her face.
“Your hand.”
Lyra looked down.
The crescent mark was still glowing.
“What is happening to me?”
Kael didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward an enormous stone wall.
He pressed his palm against it.
A hidden symbol appeared.
The same crescent surrounded by three stars.
The wall opened.
Lyra stared.
“What is that?”
“A passage.”
“To where?”
Kael looked at her.
“The Moon Chamber.”
Lyra's stomach tightened.
“The place the queen mentioned?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you said I wasn't ready.”
“You aren't.”
“Then why are we going there?”
“Because whatever woke up beneath this palace is looking for you.”
He stepped inside.
“And I need to know why.”
---
The passage descended beneath the palace.
The deeper they went, the colder the air became.
Ancient symbols covered the walls.
Some were carved into stone.
Others appeared to move beneath the surface, glowing faintly whenever Lyra passed them.
She reached toward one.
The symbol changed.
Kael stopped.
“Don't touch them.”
Lyra pulled her hand back.
“Why?”
“They respond to Moonborn blood.”
She stared at him.
“How much do you actually know about me?”
“Not enough.”
“That doesn't sound reassuring.”
“It isn't.”
They continued downward.
After several minutes, they reached a massive silver door.
There was no handle.
No lock.
Only a crescent-shaped mark in the center.
Lyra stared at it.
“I know what I'm supposed to do.”
Kael looked at her.
“What?”
“Put my hand there.”
“Don't.”
She frowned.
“You brought me here.”
“To find answers. Not to awaken something we can't control.”
Lyra looked at the door.
“What if the answers are behind it?”
Kael stepped closer.
“Then we'll find another way.”
“You're afraid.”
His expression hardened.
“I've seen what Moonborn magic can do.”
“What happened?”
Kael looked away.
“My brother.”
Lyra's voice softened.
“What happened to him?”
“He died because of it.”
Silence filled the chamber.
Before Lyra could ask anything else, footsteps echoed behind them.
Kael immediately drew his sword.
A group of royal guards appeared.
Queen Elara stood at the front.
“You were ordered to bring her to the eastern wing.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“I changed my mind.”
The queen looked at Lyra.
“Open the door.”
Lyra stepped back.
“No.”
Queen Elara's expression darkened.
“You don't understand what is happening.”
“Then explain it.”
The queen hesitated.
Lyra noticed.
“You know something.”
“I know enough.”
“Then tell me who killed my family.”
The queen's face became unreadable.
Kael looked at her sharply.
“Who?”
Queen Elara remained silent.
Lyra's patience snapped.
“I have spent seventeen years believing my life was normal. My mother lied to me to protect me. Now I'm told I'm a princess with magic that could destroy an entire kingdom, and everyone keeps refusing to tell me the truth.”
Her voice echoed through the chamber.
“I deserve answers.”
The queen finally spoke.
“Your family wasn't murdered.”
Lyra froze.
“What?”
“They were betrayed.”
“By whom?”
The queen looked toward Kael.
Lyra followed her gaze.
Kael's face had gone pale.
“No,” he whispered.
Queen Elara continued.
“The person responsible was someone inside this palace.”
Lyra's heart sank.
“Who?”
The queen didn't answer.
Instead, the silver door behind Lyra began to glow.
Everyone turned.
The crescent mark on Lyra's palm burned.
She cried out.
Kael reached for her.
“Lyra!”
But the door opened.
A wave of silver light exploded through the chamber.
The guards fell to their knees.
Queen Elara shielded her face.
Kael grabbed Lyra and held her against him.
When the light disappeared, the chamber was silent.
A throne stood inside.
Not a normal throne.
It was carved from silver crystal, with a crescent moon floating above it.
And beside it stood a woman.
Lyra stopped breathing.
She knew that face.
It was the woman from the painting.
Queen Seraphine.
Her grandmother.
Except she wasn't dead.
She was made entirely of light.
Her eyes opened.
And she looked directly at Lyra.
“My little moon.”
Lyra's eyes filled with tears.
“Grandmother?”
The spirit smiled.
“You have grown.”
Kael lowered his sword.
“How is this possible?”
Seraphine ignored him.
Her gaze remained fixed on Lyra.
“You have very little time.”
“For what?”
“The eclipse.”
Lyra frowned.
“What eclipse?”
Seraphine's expression became sorrowful.
“When the black moon rises, the seal will break.”
“What seal?”
“The one keeping the ancient darkness beneath this kingdom asleep.”
A low growl echoed from beneath the chamber.
The walls trembled.
Seraphine looked toward the floor.
“It has already begun.”
Lyra stepped closer.
“Why me?”
“Because you are the last Moonborn.”
“I don't want this.”
“You were never asked.”
The spirit reached toward her.
A silver light touched Lyra's forehead.
Suddenly, memories flooded her mind.
She saw her mother running through the palace.
She saw Queen Seraphine holding a newborn baby.
She saw Kael's father standing beside them.
And then—
A man in a black cloak.
His face was hidden.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Lyra gasped.
She had seen those eyes before.
Recently.
Very recently.
She turned toward the palace guards.
One man stood among them.
He slowly lowered his hood.
Lyra's blood ran cold.
It was the same man who had been standing outside her home the morning she was taken.
He smiled.
“Hello, Princess.”
Kael immediately stepped in front of Lyra.
“You.”
The man laughed.
“You finally found her.”
Queen Elara stepped backward.
“Guards!”
But the man's eyes began glowing black.
The palace erupted into darkness.
And beneath their feet, something ancient began to roar.
