"Let's get a divorce."
Charles placed the divorce papers on the table, his expression distant and indifferent.
Selena's friendly smile froze instantly. "Charles, what did you say? I didn't quite hear you."
Instead of repeating himself, Charles slid a check across the table toward her.
"This is five million dollars, as compensation for the past three years."
Selena's lips trembled, and it took her a moment to find her voice again. "Can't we not divorce? If there's something I've done wrong, I can change..."
Charles remained unmoved, his cold, dark eyes fixed on her pale face, devoid of any emotion.
"Selena, don't forget, I married you only to have you take Ruth's place as Mrs. Hall."
"Now that Ruth is back, everything should return to its rightful owner."
A buzzing sound filled Selena's mind, leaving her feeling as if she were falling into an endless abyss.
Of course, how could she forget?
He married her only because his beloved was too frail, and the Hall family couldn't accept a sickly woman into their home.
Under pressure from the McKinley family, he chose her from among many well-bred ladies because she posed no threat to his beloved and could easily vacate the position of Mrs. Hall when needed.
Now that the person he truly loved had returned healthy, her role as a stand-in and shield was no longer needed.
"But I love you!"
She looked at him, lost and desperate, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
From the day he saved her from drowning, she had fallen for him.
Three whole years.
Her blank memory had been filled because of him, and without him, she didn't know what would be left of her.
"You know very well, I don't love you."
Seeing her tears, Charles frowned slightly, but his voice remained cold and indifferent, offering her no hope.
"Once you sign the papers, my lawyer will handle the rest."
"You know my temperament. Don't cling on, and don't do anything unnecessary."
"Also, I don't want you appearing in front of Ruth anymore. It would upset her."
Selena's vision blurred, and the man's cold words pierced her heart like daggers, causing her to shrink in pain.
Just then, an assistant rushed in, reporting anxiously, "Sir, there's a call from Silent Garden. Miss Pearson received photos of you and the lady, and she fainted."
For the first time, a crack appeared on Charles's usually composed face. He stood up abruptly and strode out, "Get the car ready. We're heading to Silent Garden."
After taking a few steps, Charles turned back, his gaze icy and piercing as he looked at Selena. His eyes were filled with anger.
"Selena, you better pray Ruth is okay, or you'll regret it!"
"No, I didn't..." Selena hurried forward to grab his arm, desperately trying to explain. She didn't even know Ruth had returned to the country, let alone sent any intimate photos.
"Get lost!" Charles snapped, shaking her hand off with disgust. She stumbled and fell, her head hitting the sharp corner of the table, and blood began to flow instantly.
Charles's fingers twitched slightly as he coldly glanced at the motionless Selena on the floor, then turned and left without looking back.
Soon, the villa was silent, with only Selena remaining.
After what felt like an eternity, Selena slowly lifted her head, blood trickling down her forehead, adding a haunting allure to her face.
She squinted at the open villa door, pressing her tongue against her teeth, and let out a low laugh.
"Selena, oh Selena, who would've thought you'd see this day!"
She stood up, casually glanced at the divorce papers on the table, picked up a pen, and signed her name with bold strokes, full of determination and defiance.
She took out her phone and made a call.
"It's me."
"Who the heck are you?" a young man's irritated voice came through.
Selena raised an eyebrow. "Henry, feeling reckless again?"
Suddenly, there was a loud bang on the other end, followed by the man's painful groan. After a chaotic clatter, his shocked voice shouted, "Damn, Selena, you're not dead?"
Selena narrowed her eyes. "I'll give you a chance to rephrase that."
"Uh, I mean, welcome back, my lady!"
After hanging up, Selena tended to the wound on her forehead and went upstairs to gather her personal belongings.
She took out a ring box from the drawer, revealing an exquisitely crafted men's ring inside.
It was a third-anniversary gift she had designed and made herself, intended for Charles.
She let out a derisive laugh and tossed it into the trash can.
Along with it went the brain that had been chewed up over the past three years.
To think she, the rightful heir of the Green Clan, had lowered herself so much for Charles, seeking even a shred of his affection.
The thought made her want to drag out the culprit responsible for her fall into the sea and memory loss and have them punished severely.
How utterly pathetic and foolish.
After sorting through her personal belongings, she opened her laptop. Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she quickly hacked into the Silent Garden's surveillance system.
As expected, she witnessed a classic case of the thief crying thief.
In the video, the seemingly delicate woman skillfully orchestrated others to send intimate photos under her name. Then, she put on a performance of disbelief and unbearable pain upon seeing the photos, culminating in a dramatic fainting spell. Selena couldn't help but scoff.
She had thought Charles Hall was enamored with a noble and virtuous lady, but it turned out she was just a drama queen.
Selena rubbed her still-throbbing forehead, her smile cold and thin.
Charles had saved her once, and she married him to help him deal with the Hall Family, settling their debts. But this injury was a different matter.
No one could frame and hurt her, then pretend nothing happened.
After all, Selena Green was not one to let grudges go unavenged!
...
Two hours later, a convoy of luxury cars pulled up outside the villa, immediately drawing the curious eyes of the neighbors.
Soon, a handsome young man stepped out from the globally limited edition supercar in the center. He removed his sunglasses and opened his arms wide to Selena, who had just stepped out of the villa, his smile bold and bright.
"Darling, it's been too long."
Selena Green, wearing a baseball cap and with her hands in her pockets, casually walked up to the young man. She looked him up and down with a critical and disdainful expression. "It's been a few years, and you've gotten even uglier."
Despite her words, she reached out and gave him a warm hug.
"Without you around, I've been lovesick. Of course, I've gotten uglier," Henry said, looking pitiful as he hugged her arm tightly, his eyes filled with warmth and laughter.
Selena clicked her tongue and pushed him away before getting into the car.
"Don't doubt it. Ever since you disappeared, I haven't had a good night's sleep," Henry lamented, quickly following her.
Soon, the sports car roared to life, speeding away with the convoy, leaving behind a trail of whispers.
"Isn't that Lady Lambert? Who's the young guy picking her up with such a big entourage?"
"Wow, I've seen that young man before. He's the second son of the Hunt Family! I can't believe he knows Lady Lambert!"
"Look at them; they seem more than just acquaintances. They're practically inseparable!"
