Chapter 4: Secrets Beneath the Surface

Sophia's words hung in the air like a bomb waiting to detonate. The weight of her confession pressed down on the room, tension coiling tighter with every passing second. Dante leaned back against the kitchen counter, his arms crossed over his chest. His gaze, sharp as broken glass, bore into her. “What do you mean, ‘something that could destroy me’?” Sophia hesitated, her fingers trembling as they hovered over the Elena file. The truth she had been guarding was corrosive, burning her from the inside out. And yet, here she was, on the verge of sharing it with a man she barely knew. “You asked for the truth,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I don’t think you’re ready for it.” Dante’s expression darkened, his calm exterior cracking just enough to reveal the storm beneath. He pushed off the counter, closing the distance between them in a few purposeful strides. “Try me,” he said, his voice low and lethal. Sophia swallowed hard. Her instinct was to retreat, to shove the file back into the bag and pretend none of this was happening. But she knew there was no turning back. She flipped to a specific section of the file, the pages crackling like a death knell. Her hands trembled as she slid the paper toward him. Dante’s eyes flicked down to the document, his brows furrowing as he read. And then, like a switch flipping, his entire demeanor changed. “No,” he said sharply, shaking his head. “This can’t be right.” “It is,” Sophia said, her voice trembling. “That’s why I took the file. That’s why I ran.” Dante’s jaw clenched, his fingers curling into fists at his sides. “Your father... he was working with my men?” Sophia nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. “Not just your men. He’s been working with someone high up in your organization. Feeding him information, undercutting your operations. And...” Her voice faltered. Dante’s eyes snapped back to her. “And what?” Sophia took a shaky breath. “And he’s been using that connection to frame you for crimes you didn’t commit. He’s setting you up, Dante. He wants to dismantle your empire and take over what’s left.” The room went deathly quiet. Dante’s face was unreadable, his gaze fixed on the file as if it might spontaneously combust under his scrutiny. When he finally spoke, his voice was ice-cold. “Who?” Sophia hesitated. She knew the name would detonate whatever fragile alliance they had formed, but withholding it could be just as dangerous. “It’s... Enzo,” she said, barely able to say the name aloud. Dante froze, his entire body going rigid. “Enzo?” Sophia nodded. “He’s been working with my father for years. The bribes, the stolen shipments—it’s all in there. I’m sorry, Dante, but he’s been betraying you from the start.” --- For a long moment, Dante didn’t move. His expression was a mask of cold fury, but Sophia could see the cracks beneath the surface. Enzo wasn’t just a soldier in his organization—he was someone Dante trusted, someone who had been by his side through countless battles. When Dante finally spoke, his voice was like steel. “I should have seen it. The missing shipments, the ambushes... It all makes sense now.” Sophia shifted uneasily, the weight of her revelation pressing down on her. “I didn’t know how to tell you,” she said softly. “But you deserved to know the truth.” Dante’s gaze flicked to her, his eyes unreadable. “And now I do. Which means it’s time to act.” “What are you going to do?” Sophia asked, dread curling in her stomach. “I’m going to find Enzo,” Dante said, his tone final. “And when I do, he’s going to wish he’d never crossed me.” --- The tension between them lingered as Dante prepared to leave. He moved with purpose, checking his weapons and gathering what he needed. Sophia watched him from across the room, torn between fear and admiration. “You can’t just confront him,” she said suddenly, breaking the silence. Dante glanced at her, his expression hard. “Why not?” “Because he’ll deny everything,” she said, stepping closer. “And if you accuse him outright, he’ll know you’re onto him. You need proof. Something you can use to corner him.” Dante frowned, considering her words. “And what do you suggest?” Sophia hesitated. “There’s a meeting,” she said finally. “A shipment my father’s been planning with Enzo. If we intercept it, we’ll have all the proof we need.” Dante arched a brow. “And how do you know about this meeting?” Sophia’s lips twitched into a bitter smile. “Because I was supposed to be the bait. My father was going to use me to lure you into a trap.” The realization hit Dante like a freight train. His jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing. “Of course he was.” Sophia reached out, placing a tentative hand on his arm. “Let me help you. I know my father better than anyone. If we work together, we can stop him.” Dante looked at her, his gaze searching hers for any sign of deceit. Finally, he nodded. “Fine. But if you’re lying to me—” “I’m not,” she said firmly. As Dante stepped out into the night, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his expression darkening as he read the message. “He knows. Get out now.” “Dante?” Sophia asked, her voice tinged with concern. He turned to her, his expression colder than she’d ever seen. “We’ve been compromised.” From the distance, the faint roar of engines grew louder, cutting through the quiet night like a warning.
