Kathryn 24 Late December sunlight shone feebly through the window in the kitchen. Kathryn had a rare craving for coffee and schlepped out the coffeemaker from the Pantry of Useless and/or Extravagant Kitchen Appliances. Heather was on week three of recovery from her biopsy surgery. Biopsy surgery, my ass. Her surgery had lasted two hours. They didn’t just take the ovary out. Once they were in there, the surgeon had to take both ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and her uterus. They also had done something called debulking, had taken out a few regional lymph nodes, and some fatty tissue that started with an “O” that Kathryn couldn’t remember, and had scraped a layer off of her liver, checking to see if the cancer had metastasized past the pelvic area. Her diagnosis was Stage III, Grade II
