The next news from the oncologist was both startling and, somehow, not surprising. The liver tumor wasn’t shrinking anymore, and because the chemotherapy was affecting her immune system so dramatically, Heather now had a respiratory illness that was dangerously weakening her. At least pneumonia had been ruled out. She was coughing, but the x-rays only showed a few marks that could be considered fluid.
Heather’s hands and feet were numb and tingly all the time now, and she needed help buttoning anything she wore.
