Chapter Three – Shadows of the Past

719 Words
The rain fell harder, silver sheets drenching Mira as she staggered into the alley. Her breath came in sharp bursts, every sound amplified—the crash of boots, the hiss of rifles, the growl of wolves. Caden’s roar still echoed behind her, a sound that vibrated through her bones, tugging at something ancient inside her. But it was Lucian’s voice—smooth, mocking—that froze her where she stood. “Mira,” he said softly, as though savoring the taste of her name. Her throat closed. The knife in her hand slipped slightly as her grip faltered. This couldn’t be real. Lucian had been her shadow once. Her protector. Her friend who used to sneak her berries when she was too small to fight for food. He was the one who promised—I’ll always look out for you, Mira. And yet here he stood. Alive. Changed. His crimson eyes glowed like embers, unnatural. Wrong. His smile carved like a blade. “You should be dead,” she whispered. He tilted his head. “So should you. But fate doesn’t always play fair, does it?” Behind her, another crash sounded as Caden ripped through the Night Wardens inside the apartment. But the storm outside was worse. Footsteps grew louder—more Wardens advancing, their weapons humming with silver-charged energy. Mira’s pulse spiked. She should run. She should shift. She should fight. But her body betrayed her, rooted to the spot by the weight of the past standing in front of her. Lucian took a step closer, rain dripping from his cloak. “You always wondered why the fire spared you,” he said. “Why the Mark chose you. I know the truth, Mira. And I can give it to you.” Her chest clenched. The mark on her wrist throbbed, burning hotter with every syllable. “Don’t listen to him!” Caden’s voice thundered from the shadows as he burst into the alley, blood and rain streaking his golden fur. His eyes locked on Lucian, and for a moment, pure hatred crackled between them. Lucian laughed softly, shaking his head. “Still playing the hero, brother?” Mira’s heart stopped. Brother. Her gaze snapped between them. The air felt heavier, like the world itself had tilted. “Brother?” she whispered. Caden’s jaw tightened. His wolf shimmered beneath his skin as he shifted back to human, chest heaving, eyes wild. “Not now, Mira.” But Lucian’s smile widened. “He didn’t tell you? Of course he didn’t. He always did like keeping secrets.” Her stomach twisted, betrayal curling like smoke in her lungs. Caden’s voice dropped into a growl. “Lucian, don’t.” “Why not?” Lucian spread his arms. “The girl deserves the truth. It wasn’t me who left her pack to burn. It wasn’t me who vanished into the night with blood on my hands.” Mira staggered back, every nerve fraying. Her wolf howled in her chest, clawing at the edges of her control. “Stop it! Both of you!” The mark flared brighter, searing her wrist. The pain was unbearable, like molten silver running through her veins. She screamed, dropping the knife. Power crackled in the air, spiraling out of her like a storm unleashed. Wind ripped down the alley, scattering debris. The rain froze mid-air, droplets suspended like shards of glass. The Wardens froze in their tracks, staring in horror. Lucian’s crimson eyes gleamed. “There it is,” he whispered. “The Moonwalker’s power.” Caden reached for her, voice raw. “Mira, control it! You have to control it—” But it was too late. The world exploded. Light burst from her wrist, blinding, searing. A shockwave ripped outward, throwing Wardens into walls, shattering windows, shaking the ground itself. Mira collapsed to her knees, trembling, breath torn from her lungs. Her vision blurred, but she saw their faces through the haze— Lucian, smiling like a man who had won. Caden, staring at her with something between awe and fear. And her own hands glowing silver, as if she no longer belonged to herself. She choked on the truth rising in her chest. She wasn’t safe. She wasn’t human. She wasn’t free. She was the prophecy. And both brothers wanted her for it.
