I throw my pen down on the desk, no longer able to keep pretending that I’m not on edge surrounding this call. I pick up my phone, the one I use for rogue communication, and dial the burner’s number. To my surprise, it doesn’t take long for the call to be connected. There’s rustling, and then my breath hitches as her face comes into the screen.
I’m tongue-tied, quite literally tongue-tied. As confused as I’ve felt all night, I truly didn’t think my call would be answered. I thought that I’d have to come up with a new plan, which would require me to go in and grab both her and the child. Seeing her face on the screen right now is muddying my thoughts in a good way.
I clear my throat and focus on the screen. “So, what happened yesterday? I heard some things.” There’s a quiet that falls over us for a few beats.
“I don’t know what you mean.” I quietly sigh, trying to keep my anger in check.
“You know I have someone at that pack being my eyes and ears. I know you went to the cells yesterday.”
“Why would I have been put in the cells?” There’s rustling on the line, and the camera leaves her face, abruptly. I’m shown a bedroom, a very decent bedroom. “Does this look like a cell to you?” My wolf bristles at her tone, but I stay quiet. “I don’t know what you were told, but clearly you got the wrong information.” I let her words roll around in my mind without commenting.
“So you weren’t put in the cells yesterday?” She sighs, and her face comes back into the screen.
“Again, why would I have been put in the cells? You already know that I’ve been keeping quiet and to myself. What possible reason would they have to lock me up?” I won’t lie and say Jamorea’s words don’t make sense. Why would she have been put in the cells at all, let alone let out the next day? Unless… unless they know everything and they let her out, simply to take this call.
I look at Jamorea, watching every facial tick and movement of her eyes. I study her face to see if I can see the truth in it. “If you are lying to me, about anything, your brother will be the one to pay for it.”
“That’s another thing. Why would I lie about being in the cells when you have Khalid? Anything I do to you can be taken out on him. I’m not stupid.” I still don’t like her tone, and neither does Khan.
“You are speaking a bit too freely for my taste. Maybe you aren’t thinking about your brother as much as you claim.” Her intake of breath is the only indication that my words landed how I wanted them to. “You need to get out of that room and get me my information.” I don’t wait for a response before ending the call.
I pull my other phone out and dial the number. “Sir, I don’t know what’s going on. I swear that sh-”
“I’m not interesting in hearing any excuse. I don’t know what’s going on, but I want you to keep eyes on her. I want to know everything that happens no matter how small.” I disconnect the call and sit back in my chair. I’m not sure what’s going on, but I plan to figure it out.
~Jamorea~
My heart is beating out of my chest as I lower the phone. I knew that call would take a lot out of me, but I had to do it. I had to make sure that it seemed like everything was okay.
I lower myself onto the edge of the bed and slowly exhale. The bed dips next to me, and his scent surrounds me. “You did good, love. I don’t think he suspected anything.” I scoff and shake my head.
“Don’t be fooled. If he did notice something was off, he wouldn’t have said anything. There’s little he doesn’t catch.” Dominic’s sharp intake of breath breaks me out of my trance. I look at him and struggle not to smile.
“You wound me. You make it seem like I’m some weak Beta. I’m a lot stronger than you’re making me seem. Even if he did figure something out, I’ve got this.” A laugh across the room startles me. I look over at the Luna, having forgotten that she was in the room at all.
“Dominic, sometimes your ego is so big, I wonder how we all fit in the room.”
“Damn, I woke up to ‘put down Dominic’ day, didn’t I?” I can’t fight the smile that’s growing on my face. My mate is kind of cute, if I’m being completely honest. Before I can say anything, the air around us shifts, and there’s a shimmer.
“Glad to see everyone is gathered. I put some men on our spy so we should be able to keep eyes and ears on her.” Luna Katarina walks up to Aston and wraps her arms around his waist. “I doubled security on our little lady as well. She’s still sleeping.”
“She made her phone call. He seems to have bought it, but there’s no telling if he has any doubt or not.” Aston nods as he turns and returns his mate’s hold. “I think it’s time to reach out. I don’t think we can do this alone.”
“Who are you thinking? We don’t know enough about this guy right now. What if we contact someone who knows him.” Katarina pulls back and looks at her mate.
“There are two packs we trust completely. No matter who he is, they won’t betray us.” I look between the couple and Dominic. I must be the only one who doesn’t know who they are talking about. That isn’t surprising, since I don’t know much about pack politics. “We will contact the Arctic Fang and the Broken Claw packs. They are completely trustworthy and loyal to us.” Aston nods his head in agreement, and Dominic groans next to me.
“Wha… what? Is there a problem with those packs?” Dominic sighs and shakes his head.
“There isn’t a problem, really. It’s just that the Beta from Arctic Fang, Jionni Peters, man, he’s been so insufferable lately.” Aston chuckles, and Katarina sucks in her teeth.
“Here we go. You always complain about him. I think maybe you two should spare or something and get it out of your system.”
“I’d definitely win if we were to do that.” Dominic scoffs at the Luna, but she just smiles.
“I don’t know. You’re my best friend and all, but…” Dominic places a hand on his chest and puts a hurt look on his face.
“Some best friend you are, Aston. You wound me with your words.” He leans forward and puts his hand up, facing me. “And in front of my mate, no less. How dare you?” I can’t hold it in anymore, and I laugh quietly. The moment that sound hits the air, all eyes are on me. I stop abruptly and drop my head. That was beyond embarrassing.
“That, love, was the cutest sound I’ve ever heard.” I feel the heat rush to my head, and I feel the eyes on me. I definitely wish the ground would swallow me whole right now. The air changes, forcing me to look up. The Alpha and Luna are gone, leaving me alone with my mate. I look at him to find him looking at me. Mona purrs in my mind, and I’m flooded with embarrassment all over again.
“Alone at last, mat-” Dominic’s eyes glaze over and his face changes. When he focuses back on me, he looks visibly frustrated. “I hate to say this, but I have to go. I have something that needs my attention. I will find you later.” He stands up and takes a step forward. Before I can think about it, he looks back at me and leans down, placing a kiss on my forehead. His lips are warm and soft, causing me to close my eyes. When I open them, he’s gone, and my body is wrecked. Goddess, this isn’t going to be good for me.
