Chapter 41

~Aston~ The air bends around us, and we arrive to gasps and screams. “Uh, Dreamboat, I really think we should have called first.” I smile and tighten my arms around my queen. I kiss the top of her head, but don’t move from where I’m standing. “Maybe, but this may be safer for a while. We know of one traitor, but how do we know there isn’t another one? We have to be careful so we can keep our little lady safe.” In light of everything we have found out, we have to change how we go about our everyday lives. We need reinforcements, and there’s no point in waiting to reach out. The timeline Jamorea gave us happens to coincide with our wedding plans. I doubt that’s an accident. The thing is, we send out invitations all over, as one does. I have no idea how to trace them to find out who this elusive ‘Brackston’ is, the one causing so much trouble. Footsteps hurry toward us, but I don’t move an inch. I’m not really worried that anything bad will happen. I know that seems arrogant of me, but I know my people pretty well. “Alpha! Intruders!” I fight the smile trying to grow on my face. I guess they aren’t wrong, but it’s funny that we are being seen as volatile intruders. “What do you mean, intruders?! How could someone get through our defenses?! Whose head do I have to rip off for not doing their job?!” I clear my throat and let the smirk grow on my face. “Now, now. No one needs to die over this. You can’t just go around killing your warriors.” “Alpha Aston Wiley! I should have known you had something to do with everyone being up in arms. I see you’ve brought your Luna with you.” “It’s nice to see you, Alpha Mikayala.” Alpha Mikayala Davis of the Mystic Furs Pack has been a friend of mine for a long time. We used to crush on each other when we were younger, her more than me, because my eyes were always on Katarina. We never took it further than harmless flirting, but we remained friends over the years. Mikayala was happy to know I was back, and I was happy to have a friend. I’ve visited her a few times, and she gets along well with Katarina. She’s perfect to pull in to help us with whatever we will be facing down the road. We weren’t going to come here, initially, but Katarina reminded me that we would be stupid not to seek this pack's help. “It’s nice to see both of you, though a phone call of warning would have gone a long way.” Katarina looks at me before looking at Mikayala. “I told him that he should have called first. You know how over the top Aston likes to be.” “Hey, I’m right here. I’d appreciate it if you two wouldn’t talk about me as if I weren’t here.” Katarina reaches up and pinches my cheek. “Awww, poor baby.” Mikayala laughs and shakes her head. “Why don’t you two come to my office, and we can talk there.” She turns and leads the way, and we waste no time following her. Mikayala has been running this pack for some years now. She took over not too long after high school. She runs the pack with just her Beta, Bruno, her cousin. She hasn’t found her fated mate yet and refuses to take a mate. That has caused her many issues, but she doesn’t care. We walk into Mikayala’s office, closing the door once we get in. She makes herself comfortable at her desk, and Katarina sits in front of her. I stand behind Katarina, grounding myself in her presence. “You two seem very serious this visit. I’m going to assume there’s a problem.” Katarina launches into everything that happened and the information that we know. Mikayala listens quietly, making sure she doesn’t interrupt. When Katarina is done, she sits back, and we wait. “We were hoping that we could bring you in on this and you could help us.” Mikayala sits back in her seat and looks at us. “Help you with what? It seems like you don’t even have clear information about what is supposed to happen.” “We don’t,” Katarina grabs my hand, “but we are talking about our child. I don’t care if we only had a strand of hair to go on; that’s enough to fight for our child.” Mikayala doesn’t respond, but I know she heard her. “I got your back, of course. No one should be able to go after a child for any reason.” I feel my body relax, the weight of it lifting off my shoulders. Mikayala is a great friend, but as an Alpha, she can be a bit unpredictable. She always puts her pack first, and that sometimes keeps her from being someone you can rely on. “Plan to come to the pack for a few days. We have two other packs to reach out to, and then we want to create a plan.” Mikayala perks up in her chair. “I finally get that elusive invite to the BlackPaw Pack?! How exciting!” I roll my eyes and shake my head. “You’ve never needed an invite, Mikky. You never wanted to come because of King and then, I guess you just got busy.” “I HATE when you call me Mikky.” I smile at that because I know it to be true. “It doesn’t matter what happened before, just know that I will be there in the next few days. I can’t wait.” Katarina stands and wraps her arms around me. I kiss her temple as we travel away from Mikayala. ~Jionni~ I roll over as the banging continues. I pull a pillow over my head, but the sound doesn’t stop. I swear, every time I close my eyes, I hope that I never open them again. Life is much too cruel to keep going, but I never get that reprieve. The knocking sounds again, and I let out a sigh. “JIONNI! I NEED YOU UP!” I grumble and throw the covers back. I struggle to my feet, the alcohol still in my system from last night. I stumble my way to the door and throw it open. “Yes, Alpha. What can I do for you?” Tamiyah breaths in and takes a step back. “The first thing you can do is shower. I don’t need my Beta stinking up the joint. Then you can bring your ass to my office. We have visitors and I need you sitting in on this meeting.” I roll my eyes as I hang onto the door. “Who’s so important that I have to get out of bed?” Tamiyah crosses her arms over her chest and gives me that calculating look that I hate. “You’re my Beta, Jionni. That means your ass should be up regardless of what’s going on. I know you’ve been through a lot, but you swore that you’d still be able to perform your duties. If that’s changed, I need to know so I can find a functional Beta.” I let her words sit, not responding, but not really needing to do so. “Get your ass together and get to my office.” I watch Tamiyah walk away before sighing and closing my door. I guess duty calls, and there’s no getting around it.
