“I saw what she plans to do. She wants to take Skye away from us. We brought her into our home and took care of her. She’s mated to our Beta. I don’t understand how she could be so cruel.” Selene shakes her head.
“You speak as if she’s already done that dirty deed. I must remind you that nothing has happened yet.” I say nothing, the anger still coursing through me. “Remember the premonition you had about your mate’s death?” My mind goes back to that time, and I shudder. I remember having to live through that. I was terrified that the happiness I just found would be taken away from me so soon. I didn’t even care about what I saw happening to me; I was just worried about Aston. “The images you saw didn’t happen, did they?”
My mind replays everything, including the choices I made once I saw that. I made sure to keep an eye on Tatiana, knowing that she planned to betray me. Realization washes over me as I understand what the Goddess is trying to tell me. “I know you fear for your child, and any parent would feel the same. I just ask that before you make any rash decisions, you take the time to find out what’s really going on. Danny has a lot she hasn’t told anyone, and I think if you were to talk to her, you’d be able to see this from a different perspective.”
I instantly think of my role as a leader, a Luna. I can’t go around making snap judgments based on little to no information. Selene is right in that I need to talk to Danny to see what parts of the story I don’t already know. Dominic has said that she seems to be hiding something, and maybe whatever she’s hiding is pushing her to be the version of herself that I saw in my premonition. I guess the least I can do, as a Luna, is do my due diligence and make sure this is what it seems to be.
I swear, Selene must be in my thoughts because the look on her face is one of satisfaction. She looks as if she likes what she heard and is happy that it’s going in the right direction. “You’re right. I will talk to Danny and determine what I might be missing in her story.” Selene nods and smiles at me.
“I would love to stay and chat, but your mate is going through it right now. I think you need to go back so he can know that you are okay.” I stand, and the tree stump immediately disappears. “Oh, don’t worry about Skye. She’s doing quite well. She’s developing her powers early because of all the love that she has in her life. She is more open to her wolf, even though she doesn’t know anything about it yet. Also, you and Aston are a different match than there has ever been for a gold wolf. You both are powerful in your own right and even more powerful together. Most of Skye’s powers won’t appear until she’s marked, so that gives you time to prepare her.” Relief washes over me at this. I was so worried about Skye and her future, given that she seemed to be already exhibiting powers. If this is all she has right now, I can work with that.
All too soon, I’m back in our bedroom with Aston pacing back and forth. There’s no one else in the room with me, so he must have realized what happened. When he senses that I’m back, he stops moving and looks at me. “The Moon Goddess freaks me out when she does that.” I just smile and motion for him to join me in bed.
When Aston gets next to me, I cuddle against him, listening to his heartbeat. “She said Skye will be okay. She won’t be getting all of her powers early. She said we are both so powerful and Skye has so much love around her that this is the result.” Aston’s chest vibrates as he responds to my words. I close my eyes and try to gain peace from this moment.
“That isn’t why the Moon Goddess called you, is it?” Damn! I can never get anything past Aston. He’s too smart, and he knows me too well.
I sigh and shift on his chest so I can look up at him. “I had a premonition.” Aston doesn’t say anything, but his eyes are telling me that he’s waiting for me to go into detail. I gather my courage and launch into what I saw, trying to keep my anger down. I can feel Aston’s anger flare up through the bond, and I try to ready myself to calm him down like the Moon Goddess calmed me.
“So when are you going to go talk to her?’ I sit up and look at Aston.
“Talk to her? You don’t want to get rid of her? You don’t want me to use my powers to end her?” Ashton shakes his head and pulls me back to lie on his chest.
“I won’t lie. Hearing about your premonition does make my feelings run hot. I just remember the last time this happened, we were able to change the outcome. I know that what you saw isn’t guaranteed to come to fruition. We need to do whatever we can to make sure this doesn’t come to pass. The first step in doing that is talking to her and hoping that she will be honest.”
“Look at you, Mr. Alpha man. Are you an open-minded leader?” Aston tightens his hold on me.
“What can I say? You bring out the best in me. You will talk to her, and we will figure out where she stands after that. We won’t go to Dominic until we have a good idea what we are dealing with. Everything will work out.”
“What… what if we have to get rid of her? What if we realize that she isn’t a good person and is a danger to this pack? What would we even tell Dominic?” Aston sighs.
“As horrible as that would be, he would be okay. He already suspected her in the first place. He will hurt, but he would want us to put the pack and Skye before his own wants and wishes. We would just have to be there for him if it came to that.” I close my eyes, not wanting to imagine having to do all of that. The way the premonition looked says otherwise. “Let’s not imagine the worst already. Let’s hope that we can figure things out, and we come out on the right side of things. I really think that Danny is okay. Maybe she’s mixed up in something that’s out of her control. We will find out soon enough.” Aston kisses me on my head as I burrow into his chest. “Sleep, love. You’ll need a clear head tomorrow.”
