Chapter36

~Brackston~ I lean back in my chair, replaying the entire conversation. I’m not embarrassed to admit that my d***k was hard the entire time, and it’s still hard now. I’m not sure what it is about that girl, but I want her so badly. It wasn’t the smartest idea to have her on a video call, but I needed to appease Khan. He was making life difficult because he wanted her here with us. Seeing her just made everything harder. It made me want to throw the plan out the window, bring her back here, and bury my d***k inside of her. It took everything in me to fight that instinct and let the conversation play out the way it needed to. I’ve asked my wolf about this, and he’s sure that she isn’t our fated mate. That isn’t even the point, though, because he wants her as badly as I do. I’m not sure what the future holds for us, but I am sure that she’s going to be next to me in some capacity. I was never one hung up on the mate bond. I didn’t really care to think about it, and I never thought that it was something important to my life. I don’t think we should rely on some made-up deity to choose our life partners for us. She hasn’t been known to make the best choices, if I’m being honest. I’ve always thought that I’d decide on my own who I wanted to be with. It’s what my father did and what his father did before him. They learned long ago that the mate bond is a farce at best, and they refused to be pulled under by it. Maybe, if I were to come across my fated mate, I’d keep Jamorea on the side. She’d be easy access, and I could keep her close. I’d assume that I’d consider taking my fated mate because my pups may be stronger. I have to admit, though, I don’t fully believe in that fairy tale. I would expect my pups to be strong if I mate with an Alpha, maybe a Beta. Anything else doesn’t bring a guarantee of strength, even if they are my Goddess-given mate. I don’t know why we are so hell-bent on believing such stories, but I’m glad that my family could cut through the crap and see the truth. My phone ringing breaks me out of my thoughts. “What?” “It’s me. I… I think we have a problem here.” ~Jamorea~ The pleading tone of his voice is pulling at some strings inside of me that I can’t ignore. It isn’t just that he’s my fated mate. I can feel that he genuinely cares for me, and it’s been so long since I’ve had that. I wasn’t sure if I’d feel it again, but here it was, sitting across from me on the cold stone floor. I’d imagine that if I had access to Mona, she would tell me that this was the perfect time to be open and honest. She would shut down any argument or insecurity that I had and tell me to do this, to trust him. This could be the biggest mistake of my life, but I’m not sure I can continue to fight against my feelings. I let out a long sigh and close my eyes. I let my head move back so it can lean against the cell wall. I’m terrified to do this, but at some point, I have to trust something or someone. If this doesn’t work out for me, well, at least I can say that I tried. “The rogue Alpha, he… he sent me here.” There’s silence from the hall, and I think I appreciate that more than I should. “My brother and I have been stuck with him for a while now. I tried to run, and I thought we made it. I thought that I, at least, was able to get my brother out. They captured me... brought me back, but I had told my brother to run. I didn’t care what happened to me, as long as he was free.” My voice starts to crack, and my chest feels heavy. “When they brought me back to camp, he… he had Khalid. I don’t even think he got far. They left me in a tent and practically starved me. They beat me up before I got here, to make the story more believable.” “Why did they send you here?” My stomach drops, and my mouth feels dry. I really don’t want to say this out loud, but I know that I have to. I know that I can’t escape it. I either tell it all or I stay in here and take whatever comes my way. “He… he told me that I have three months…” Brackston’s voice is echoing through my mind. I’m hearing him all over again, and my reaction is the same as it was the first time. The terror, disbelief, and sadness are flowing through me, and I know there’s nothing I can do about it. “For?” I try to swallow past the lump in my throat. This is it. I either do this, or I let the chips fall where they may. “He wants me to prepare the chil-, to prepare Skye for him. He plans to take Skye and he wants me to hand her to him.” I don’t dare open my eyes or look in his direction. The weight of the air in the room is enough for me to know what I need to. I hear rustling of clothes, and I know that Dominic is up. “I…” I stop and breathe as best I can. “I didn’t want to do it. He said if I didn’t then he would hurt my brother. I… I’ve been trying to figure out how to keep her away from him and save my brother at the same time, I swear, I didn’t want to do it. I still don’t.” My voice tapers off at the end, but I’m sure it doesn’t matter. It takes a bit, but his footsteps finally sound before fading out. I did it, and I’m sure Mona would be proud, but I have no idea what I just did to myself or to my brother.
