Chapter 1: Unplanned Encounters

1128 Words
**Alexandra Moore** had always found solace in design. The world could be chaotic, unpredictable, but in her studio, everything made sense. Colors, shapes, and textures flowed from her mind to her hands, turning ideas into tangible beauty. At 34, Alexandra was a sought-after interior designer in the city, known for her clean lines and modern aesthetics. Her career was thriving, but her personal life… well, that was another story. She stepped into the small café on the corner, the familiar scent of coffee beans and baked goods greeting her as she pushed open the door. It was her daily ritual before heading to her studio, a moment of calm before the day’s demands took over. The café was quiet this early in the morning, just a few regulars scattered at the tables. Alexandra joined the short line, her mind already sifting through the day’s tasks. There was a new client meeting, sketches to finalize, and a fabric delivery she needed to oversee. Everything had to be perfect. “Next!” a voice called from behind the counter. Alexandra looked up, expecting to see the usual barista, but instead, she found herself face-to-face with someone new. He was young, probably in his mid-twenties, with a friendly smile that instantly made her feel at ease. “Good morning,” he said warmly. “What can I get for you?” “Medium latte, extra shot, no sugar,” she replied automatically, her usual order. “Coming right up,” he said, turning to prepare her drink with practiced ease. As she waited, Alexandra couldn’t help but notice how effortlessly he moved. He wasn’t just going through the motions—there was a genuine care in the way he worked, a quiet confidence that intrigued her. “Busy day ahead?” he asked as he handed over her drink. “You could say that,” she replied, taking the cup. “Designing a new restaurant interior. Lots of moving parts.” “Sounds exciting,” he said, his smile widening. “I’m Ryan, by the way. If you’re in here often, I should probably know your name.” “Alexandra,” she said, offering a brief smile of her own. “Nice to meet you, Ryan.” “Likewise,” he said, giving her a playful wink. “I’ll remember that order, Alexandra.” As she left the café, sipping her latte, Alexandra found herself thinking about Ryan. There was something refreshing about him, something that stood out in a city full of people rushing through their days. Maybe it was his easygoing nature, or the way he seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say. The rest of the morning was a blur of consultations and meetings. Alexandra’s studio was bustling with activity, her small team of designers working on various projects. But even as she reviewed fabric swatches and sketched out floor plans, her thoughts kept drifting back to that brief encounter at the café. It wasn’t until lunch that she found a moment to herself. She sat at her drafting table, her lunch spread out beside her, and let out a deep breath. The morning had been productive, but exhausting. She was ready to take a break, to let her mind wander for a bit. Her phone buzzed with a message from her best friend, **Jenna**. *Lunch tomorrow? I need details on this new client of yours!* Alexandra smiled and quickly typed back, *Of course. Same place?* Jenna’s response was immediate: *You bet! Can’t wait!* She set her phone down and leaned back in her chair, staring at the sketches pinned to the wall. The designs were good, some of her best work, but something was missing. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it. As she contemplated the drawings, her thoughts once again drifted to Ryan. What was it about him that had caught her attention? He was just a barista, someone she’d met once and would probably never think about again. But there was something different about him, something that had stirred a curiosity she hadn’t felt in a long time. The day passed quickly, and by the time she left the studio, the sun was beginning to set. As she walked home, Alexandra found herself drawn to the café again. It was on her way, after all, and she could use another pick-me-up before heading to her apartment. The café was busier in the evening, but it still had the same cozy atmosphere she loved. She spotted Ryan behind the counter, chatting with another customer, and for a moment, she hesitated. What was she doing here, really? It wasn’t like her to go out of her way for something—or someone—like this. But before she could second-guess herself, Ryan noticed her and flashed that same easy smile. “Back again, Alexandra?” “Couldn’t stay away,” she said lightly, stepping up to the counter. “I’ll take another latte, please.” He nodded and started making her drink. “Long day?” “Busy,” she said, watching him work. “But that’s how I like it.” Ryan glanced up at her, his expression curious. “So, what got you into design?” Alexandra paused, surprised by the question. Most people just asked about her current projects or commented on the industry. But Ryan seemed genuinely interested in her, not just her work. “I’ve always loved creating spaces that make people feel something,” she said, choosing her words carefully. “It’s like… giving shape to an emotion. And seeing someone walk into a room I’ve designed and light up—that’s the best part.” Ryan smiled, clearly appreciating her passion. “I get that. I’m studying nursing for a similar reason, actually. Helping people, making a difference… it’s what drives me.” “Nursing?” Alexandra repeated, genuinely impressed. “That’s amazing. It’s not easy, I’m sure.” “It’s challenging,” Ryan admitted, “but I love it. Just like you love design.” Their conversation was cut short as another customer walked in, and Ryan had to turn his attention back to work. But as he handed Alexandra her latte, their fingers brushed again, and she felt a small spark—a connection she hadn’t expected. “Good luck with the restaurant,” Ryan said as she turned to leave. “I’m sure it’ll be incredible.” “Thanks, Ryan,” she said, her smile lingering. “And good luck with your studies.” As she walked out of the café, Alexandra couldn’t help but feel a little lighter, a little more hopeful. Life had a way of surprising you when you least expected it, and maybe, just maybe, that was something to embrace.
