Chapter 3: Calculated Risk

1124 Words
The Vescari estate sat high above the coast, a modern fortress of black glass, reinforced concrete, and high walls hidden behind iron gates. To the rest of the world, it was an architectural masterpiece. To Elena, tonight it felt like a gilded cage with an perimeter of armed men. The silence in the master suite was heavy, broken only by the steady pour of scotch into a heavy crystal tumbler. Damian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his jacket off, his black silk shirt unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He took a slow sip, his eyes tracking the red laser beams of the perimeter security motion sensors sweeping the estate grounds. Behind him, the bathroom door clicked open. Elena stepped out, steam lingering behind her. She had removed the emerald dress and replaced it with a silk black robe tied loosely at her waist. Her damp hair fell over her shoulders, framing a face that was entirely too calm for a woman whose evening had been cut short by armed escorts. Damian turned, his gaze slow, dark, and lingering as he took her in. No matter how tense the room was, the physical current between them was always there—a quiet, dangerous pull that neither of them could turn off. "Cassian doubled the estate guards," Damian said, his voice smooth and low. "You won't be leaving the grounds tomorrow." Elena walked over to the vanity, picking up a silver hairbrush with deliberate grace. "Is that an advisory or an order?" "It's the reality," Damian replied, setting his glass on the marble side table and closing the distance between them. He stopped directly behind her seat at the vanity, resting his hands on her bare shoulders. His palms were warm, heavy, and grounding. Through the mirror, their eyes met. "You're suffocating me, Damian," she said softly, watching his reflection. "Every time there's a whisper of a threat in your world, you draw the walls tighter. I am not one of your assets to be locked in a vault." "An asset can be replaced," Damian murmured, his thumb stroking the curve of her collarbone. His touch was deceptively tender, contrasting sharply with the coldness in his eyes. "You cannot." Elena turned slightly, leaning back against his chest and looking up at him directly. "Then talk to me. Who was the message from at the gala?" Damian’s expression didn't shift by a fraction. "Business." "Business doesn't make your jaw set like iron. Business doesn't make you surround me with four armed men just to walk to a car." She reached up, resting her hand over his heart, feeling its steady, unhurried beat. "If someone is coming after your empire, tell me." Damian looked down at her, his fingers gently tangling in her damp hair, tilting her face up to his. For a second, a fleeting moment of vulnerability flickered deep in his gray-green eyes—the rare glimpse of the man behind the ruthless king. He loved her. She knew that with absolute certainty. But he loved her through the lens of a man who believed control was the only thing standing between life and death. "My empire is my burden, Elena," he whispered, bending down to press a slow, possessive kiss to the sensitive spot beneath her ear, making her breath hitch despite herself. "Your only job is to stay safe." My job is to find out what you're hiding, she thought, closing her eyes as his lips tracked up her jawline. Damian pulled her up from the vanity chair, bringing her body flushed against his. The intimacy between them was instant, familiar, and intense—a battle of wills fought through touch. He kissed her deeply, demanding and possessive, his hands gripping her waist as if anchoring her to him. Elena kissed him back with equal fire, pulling him closer, her hands sliding over his broad shoulders. It was real. The heat, the desire, the deep-rooted connection—it was all real. And that was what made the lies between them so lethal. Two hours later, the suite was dark. The steady, rhythmic sound of Damian’s breathing told Elena he was finally asleep, one heavy arm draped possessively over her waist, holding her flushed against his chest. Slowly, millimeter by millimeter, Elena slipped out from beneath his grip. She held her breath, waiting for him to stir, but Damian remained still, exhausted from hours of managing security breaches and high-stakes operations. She quietly tied her robe, picked up her phone from the nightstand, and slipped out of the master bedroom, barefoot and silent as a ghost. She navigated the dark hallway, avoiding the floorboards she knew creaked, and retreated into the privacy of Damian’s home office down the corridor. She didn't turn on the lights. The faint glow of the city skyline through the window provided just enough light to move. Sitting at the heavy mahogany desk, Elena pulled up her encrypted messaging app. Her contact had replied. Attached were three high-resolution PDF scans of archived Vescari financial transfers from October 2018—the exact month Alessandro Vescari was assassinated. Elena scrolled past the complex shell company codes, her eyes scanning down the column until her breath caught in her throat. There was her father's signature: Marco Moretti. Beside it was a wire transfer confirmation for two million dollars, authorized directly from an offshore account owned by Alessandro Vescari. But it wasn't a payout. It was labeled as an escrow payment for intelligence delivery. Her father hadn't just been bailed out by the Vescaris. He had sold information to them. Or about them. And right below her father's signature was a secondary authorization code. A code that belonged to a private account created three days after Alessandro’s death. The account holder name: Elena Moretti Trust. Elena felt the room spin. Cold sweat broke out on the back of her neck. Damian hadn't just been hiding her father's betrayal. He had set up a financial trust in her name using money tied directly to the night his father was murdered. He had bound her to his empire's dark history before she had even met him. Suddenly, a quiet click echoed from the doorway. The office lights flooded the room. Elena froze, her screen still glowing brightly in her hand. Damian stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame. He wore dark trousers, his chest bare, his posture relaxed. But his eyes were wide awake, pitch-black, and focused entirely on the phone in her hands. "You couldn't sleep, mia cara?" Damian asked softly, his tone dangerously calm. He took one slow step into the office, the heavy wooden door swinging shut behind him with a definitive thud. "What are you looking at?"
