Chapter 2:The Ruthless Alpha

719 Words
Aria's heart pounded as she stared into the darkness. Two icy-blue eyes glowed between the towering pine trees, never leaving her face. A low growl echoed through the silent forest. She took a cautious step backward. Then another. The growl grew louder. Suddenly, a massive black wolf emerged from the shadows. He was unlike any wolf Aria had ever seen. His fur was as dark as midnight, his eyes burned like blue fire, and every step carried the confidence of a king. She instinctively reached for the dagger hidden beneath her cloak. The wolf stopped a few feet away, studying her with unsettling calm. Then, in a flash of silver light, the wolf disappeared. Standing in its place was a tall man dressed in black leather armor. His sharp jaw, piercing blue eyes, and commanding presence made him impossible to ignore. There was no doubt who he was. Alpha Kael Blackthorn. The ruthless Alpha feared by every pack. "So," he said, crossing his arms, "you're the little trespasser my patrol has been chasing." Aria tightened her grip on her dagger. "I didn't know I crossed into your territory." Kael raised an eyebrow. "That's your excuse?" "I was running." "From what?" She looked away. "It doesn't concern you." A faint smile tugged at his lips. "It became my concern the moment you stepped onto my land." Before Aria could answer, several Blackthorn warriors emerged from the trees and surrounded her. "Alpha," one of them said. "Should we arrest her?" Kael didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked slowly toward Aria. When he was only a step away, he stopped. His wolf stirred uneasily. There was something different about her. Her scent... It wasn't ordinary. It carried the fragrance of moonflowers after rain, mixed with something ancient that he couldn't identify. His wolf growled inside him. Protect her. Kael frowned. That had never happened before. "Who are you?" he asked quietly. "My name is Aria." "And your pack?" Silence. "I don't have one." One of the warriors scoffed. "She's lying." Kael noticed the fear in Aria's eyes. Not the fear of being caught. The fear of being recognized. She was hiding something. Before he could question her again, a sharp whistle echoed through the forest. An arrow flew toward Aria. Kael reacted instantly. He pulled her against him just as the arrow struck the tree behind her. "Ambush!" one of the warriors shouted. Dark-cloaked hunters burst from the forest, their faces hidden beneath black hoods. "There she is!" one of them yelled. "Don't let her escape!" Aria's face drained of color. "They found me..." Kael looked at her. "You know these people?" "They're the reason I ran." The hunters charged. Kael drew his sword in one smooth motion. "No one attacks on my territory." The battle exploded into chaos. Steel clashed against steel as Blackthorn warriors met the attackers head-on. Kael fought like a storm. Every swing of his sword sent another enemy crashing to the ground. Aria backed away, trying not to get caught in the fighting. Then one hunter broke through the line. He rushed straight toward her. "You can't hide forever!" he snarled. Aria stumbled. The hunter raised his blade. Just before it could strike, Kael appeared between them. Their swords collided with a loud clang. Kael's eyes turned icy. "If you want her..." "You'll have to kill me first." The hunter smiled beneath his hood. "So..." "The rumors are true." Kael frowned. "What rumors?" The hunter looked from Kael to Aria and laughed. "You don't even know who you're protecting." He reached into his cloak and threw a handful of black powder onto the ground. Smoke filled the clearing. By the time it cleared, the hunters were gone. Only silence remained. Kael turned toward Aria. "Start talking." "What are they after?" Aria's hands trembled. "If I tell you the truth..." "...you'll wish you'd left me in the forest." Kael held her gaze. "Try me." Before Aria could answer, his wolf let out a powerful howl inside his mind. One word echoed through his entire body. Mate. Kael froze. "No..." "It can't be." Aria looked at him in confusion. "What is it?" Kael stared at her, unable to believe what his wolf had just revealed. The girl he had rescued... The girl everyone was hunting... Was his fated mate.
