The Vermont sky was a soft shade of morning blue when the hospital doors slid open and Oliver stepped out, gently carrying the baby car seat in one hand and holding Emily’s hand in the other. Emily, though exhausted, glowed with quiet joy as the crisp air brushed against her cheeks.
“Ready?” Oliver asked, glancing over at her with a soft smile.
She nodded, adjusting her cardigan. “I still can’t believe they’re letting us take her home. Shouldn’t they send a manual or something?”
Oliver chuckled, placing the car seat in the back of their SUV. “Too late to return her now, Mrs. Thornhart. She’s stuck with us.”
Emily gave him a playful glare but leaned against his side as he wrapped an arm around her. “Good. Because I’m already in love.”
