ELENA
“Defiance isn’t exactly one of your strong fortes. Mi amor.” Carlo said arrogantly as he strode into the kitchen. He could survive without me, that I knew, and as much as a lot of women would say otherwise, I loved the feeling of taking care of Carlo.
None of those things I had looked forward to while getting married to Carlo ever happened.
“Let’s get a divorce.” I said while squaring my shoulders so he couldn’t see just how much those words were killing me inside. I didn’t even want to imagine the shame and embarrassment I would feel when it became news that after less than a year of being married, we were going our separate ways.
My gaze is also fastened on Carlo. I watch as his whole body freezes at my words. Does he feel pain? Surprise? Relief?
Carlo burst out laughing and he looked at me like I had just said the most absurd thing in the world.
“You really have no clue, huh?” He said as he grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl.
“The prenuptial agreement clearly states that you cannot divorce me or leave me alone, Elena.” He said with a s**t-eating grin on his face. I feel air leave my lungs.
I couldn’t divorce him? Why had he done that?
“It’s so cute to see you being this clueless. What do you think is the whole point then? To let you go so easily?” He asked his every word, a slap on my face.
I didn’t need a mirror to know that I definitely looked like I had seen a ghost. I slumped in the kitchen chair as I tried to understand everything I had just heard.
Was Carlo just trying to threaten me? I tried hard to remember what the prenuptial had contained. Back then, I had been giddy and silly in love and so when Carlo’s lawyer had suggested it, I had insisted on it despite him telling the lawyer we didn’t need it.
The draft had arrived a day later and I just signed it without bothering to read through it later. After all, there’s no way a prenup could go wrong, right?
With my appetite already gone, I go back to the room the sound of water allows me to know that Carlo’s in the shower now. I grab my purse and car keys and ran out hurriedly.
I don’t think I can stand his presence anymore.
I drove aimlessly for about thirty minutes and then finally stopped in front of a cafe when I realized that I had just kept thinking of it and couldn’t do anything about it.
The most I could do was find out if it was true and inform my brother about this. Daniel still knew some of Papa’s old pals in the Mafia. If they threatened Carlo slightly, getting the prenup out of the way would be relatively easy.
My phone rings just as the waitress brings my order, a steaming cup of coffee with bagels that I hoped would taste as heavenly as they smelt.
“Did you drop your phone somewhere? This is the fifth time I have called.” She whined the moment I picked up the call.
“And what’s so urgent?”
“Well, there’s this charity ball this evening and everyone is going to be there. I need a dress so I need to know if you will be attending or you have some time to help me pick out one from your store.”
Anna always had this thought that no one knew the best clothes in her store more than the designer, yet, Elena felt it was the opposite. To her, all her creations were special and she would never see it in a bad light.
However, she could do her best to make sure she was picking a dress that did justice to the wearer.
“I’ll be free in thirty. You can meet me at the central store.” She said and ended the call immediately. If she left Anna alone, she would chatter the whole day off before they could even get the chance to go to the store to select her outfits.
