Chapter Twenty Five: Sick

968 Words
“Yeah I’m done packing.” I said into the phone with a playful eye roll. Kyle was as fussy as a pregnant woman and since he found out that I had been terribly sick for the past three days, he had been on call with me since. I didn’t feel like it was a big deal and, if I was being honest, most of it had to be from living alone in this mansion. Yes, it was luxurious and stylish, but staying alone in here all day long with only the security had me going nuts. Knowing that the security wouldn’t let Kyle in, I struggled to carry the bag of essentials I had packed downstairs. I was panting, breath coming in hot waves when I got to the bottom of the stairs. “Are you there?” Kyle asked. On the other hand, his pitch was higher than normal and had a hint of worry. I couldn’t be sure though. I was feeling really fuzzy and dazed. “I don’t think I can make it out there.” I groaned while using my palm holding my forehead, the temperature startling me. “Carlo,” I mumbled as I felt the world spinning around me as my body fell apart. A distant call of my name rings in my ears even as I lose consciousness. **** I squinted my eyes at the bright light that was shining into it and I closed it back immediately, the sharpness too much for me to handle. “She’s awake, just give her some time to open her eyes and regain her senses.” I heard an unfamiliar voice say and then footsteps. After a moment, I reluctantly opened my eyes, glad that there wasn’t any bright light blaring in them. “Oh my god! You are really okay.” I tried to sit up and I took in the fact that I was in a hospital. Kyle rushed towards me, his eyes laced with worry that made me feel warm immediately. “What’s wrong with me?” I asked cautiously. A part of me was tired of how things had been recently, but there was another part of me that wasn’t ready to go. But I have been really weak these past few days. “They are still running tests but the doctor assured me that you are fine. He said you high level fever and then he needs to confirm some results.” He explained while placing his palm on my forehead to check my temperature. “Your body has calmed down. You were burning hot this afternoon when I got into your house.” He sighed in relief and then sat on the bed beside me. “You really should have told me you weren’t feeling well. I would have taken you to the hospital when it was just starting.” “I’m sorry, I kept feeling like I only needed more rest from the whole workload we took on in the last three weeks.” I didn’t like to make people worry about me and seeing how worried Kyle was right now made me feel really guilty. We were both talking and Kyle was making me laugh with the story of how he had gotten Carlo’s security to let him enter when the doctor came back in. “You would think he wanted to keep you locked up because of how difficult it was,” he said, still unaware of the doctor’s presence. “Sir, from the test results” the doctor said, getting Kyle’s attention as he turned over immediately. “I’m glad to inform you that your wife is about four weeks pregnant.” He announced with a broad smile and I could have sworn that I felt the world stopped right there. It wasn’t only me. I could feel Kyle’s hands that were holding mine tighten immediately. The doctor looked between the both of us and the weird reaction we had since he already thought us to be husband and wife. “Is anything the matter?” He asked with caution and curiosity, fighting for dominance on his face. I shook my head hurriedly. “Nothing, we just weren’t expecting a baby, since we had been very busy with work and weren’t planning for one.” I explained shabbily. The doctor, however, bought the story as his face morphed into a knowing smile. “This happens a lot and while it can be altering, it’s just better to have it and be done with your reproductive age. Besides, you are both young and healthy and it’s normal for your fertility to have a spike. ” He added, and at this moment, I was considering adding a statement where I addressed the educational system to also include self awareness and mood reading in the medical curriculum. “Is that why she developed a fever and fainted?” Kyle asked, changing the conversation dynamics. “Well, we noticed that she had been under nourished and stressed. Coupled with her body going through the giving birth changes and morning sickness, it’s only normal that she had such a black out.” The doctor explained and Kyle nodded in understanding. “Thank you doctor, I'd like to get her something to eat and then I’ll drop by your office to find out the necessary things we need to do and get.” His words had the doctor nodding approvingly as he left my ward. “Elle,” Kyle called out. He was obviously unsure of what to say. “I think I'd like to be alone for a while,” I managed to say while trying not to sound rude or ungrateful. Getting pregnant for a man I wanted to leave was definitely not one of my plans.
