The days between Christmas and New Year’s Eve felt like a dream—a blend of quiet, intimate moments and festive cheer. Jessica found herself smiling more often, laughing more freely. Her home was filled with warmth, not just from the crackling fireplace but from the people she loved most.
But as the calendar ticked closer to a new year, Jessica couldn’t help but reflect on how far she had come—and how much further she had to go.
“Mom, do you think we’ll see fireworks?” Lily asked, her excitement palpable as she helped Jessica hang streamers around the living room.
“I’m sure we will,” Jessica replied with a smile. “The village always puts on a great show.”
Ethan walked in, carrying a box of decorations. “I heard Sam’s got something big planned at the resort for tonight. Fireworks, music, the whole shebang.”
Jessica turned to him, raising an eyebrow. “And how do you know that?”
Ethan grinned. “I may have helped him set up a few things.”
“Of course, you did,” Jessica said, shaking her head fondly.
As Lily raced off to find more glittery stars for the decorations, Ethan stepped closer to Jessica, his voice dropping to a softer tone. “You’re coming tonight, right?”
Jessica hesitated. Crowds still made her uneasy, and the idea of being surrounded by so many people—many of whom she hadn’t seen since her return—felt daunting.
“I don’t know…” she began, but Ethan interrupted her gently.
“Jess, it’s a fresh start. A way to say goodbye to everything that’s weighed you down and step into something new. Besides, I’ll be there. And Lily’s so excited—it wouldn’t be the same without you.”
Jessica looked into his eyes, finding the steady reassurance that had become her anchor. “Okay,” she said finally. “I’ll go.”
The resort was dazzling, its grand ballroom transformed into a winter wonderland. Snowflakes hung from the ceiling, lights twinkled everywhere, and tables were laden with delicious food and sparkling drinks. The air buzzed with excitement as villagers and visitors mingled, laughing and sharing stories of the past year.
Jessica felt a mix of nerves and anticipation as she walked in, Lily holding her hand and Ethan by her side.
“You look stunning,” Ethan whispered, his eyes lingering on her midnight-blue dress.
Jessica smiled, her cheeks flushing. “Thank you. You don’t look too bad yourself.”
They were quickly greeted by Sam, who enveloped Jessica in a bear hug. “I’m so glad you made it,” he said, grinning. “This night’s going to be one for the books.”
As the evening progressed, Jessica found herself relaxing, enjoying the company of old friends and new acquaintances. She watched as Lily danced with a group of other children, her laughter filling the room.
Ethan appeared at her side, holding out his hand. “May I have this dance?”
Jessica hesitated, looking around at the bustling crowd. “I haven’t danced in years…”
“There’s no better time to start,” Ethan said, his voice warm and inviting.
Taking a deep breath, Jessica placed her hand in his, allowing him to lead her onto the dance floor. The band began playing a slow, romantic tune, and Ethan pulled her close, his movements sure and steady.
“You’re a natural,” he said, his voice low.
Jessica laughed softly. “Hardly. You’re the one doing all the work.”
“Not true,” Ethan replied, looking into her eyes. “This feels effortless. Like it was always meant to be.”
Jessica’s heart swelled at his words, and for the first time in a long time, she felt completely at ease—safe, cherished, and free.
As midnight approached, everyone gathered outside to watch the fireworks. The night sky was clear, the stars shining brightly above the snow-covered village.
Lily stood in front of Jessica and Ethan, bundled up in her coat and scarf, her breath visible in the chilly air.
“Ten… nine… eight…” the crowd began to count down, their voices rising with excitement.
Jessica glanced at Ethan, her heart racing. The year had been a whirlwind, filled with challenges, heartbreak, and growth. But it had also brought her hope, love, and the promise of a brighter future.
“Three… two… one… Happy New Year!”
The sky erupted in a cascade of colors as fireworks lit up the night, their brilliance reflected in Lily’s wide eyes. Jessica turned to Ethan, who was already looking at her with a soft, steady gaze.
“Happy New Year, Jess,” he said, his voice barely audible over the cheers.
“Happy New Year, Ethan,” she replied.
Before she could say more, Ethan leaned in, capturing her lips in a kiss that was both tender and full of promise. The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them standing beneath the glittering sky.
When they pulled apart, Jessica rested her forehead against his, a smile spreading across her face.
“This year is going to be different,” she said softly.
“It already is,” Ethan replied, his voice filled with certainty.
Back at home, after Lily had fallen asleep, Jessica and Ethan sat by the fire, the room quiet and warm.
“I’ve been thinking about something,” Ethan said, breaking the silence.
Jessica looked at him, her curiosity piqued. “What is it?”
“I know you’ve been through so much, and I never want to push you into anything. But I also know what I want—what I’ve wanted for a long time.”
Jessica’s breath caught as she watched him reach into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.
“Ethan…” she began, her voice trembling.
He opened the box to reveal a simple, elegant ring. “I love you, Jess. And I love Lily. I want to build a life with you—a life filled with love, laughter, and all the things you both deserve. Will you marry me?”
Tears filled Jessica’s eyes as she looked at the man who had brought so much light into her life.
“Yes,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “Yes, Ethan. I’ll marry you.”
Ethan slipped the ring onto her finger, his hands steady despite the emotion in his eyes. Then he pulled her into his arms, holding her as if he never wanted to let go.
And in that moment, Jessica knew she had found her forever.
