Chapter Ten
Garrett Hayes had spent his entire life choosing power.
Not because he loved it.
Because he needed it.
Power protected him from betrayal.
Power gave him control over situations that once made him feel helpless.
Power allowed him to build an empire strong enough that nobody could take it away.
But standing in his office with Nora beside him, Garrett realized something he had never considered before.
Sometimes the things you gained through power were not worth losing the people who mattered.
"The person behind this is someone we both know."
Nora stared at him.
"Who?"
Garrett remained silent.
She noticed immediately.
"You know."
He looked away.
"Garrett."
"I need to confirm everything before I say anything."
Nora's expression hardened.
"Again?"
He looked at her.
"What?"
"Again, you are keeping me in the dark."
"This is different."
"Is it?"
Her voice softened, but the disappointment was clear.
"You keep saying you trust me, but when things become serious, you shut me out."
Garrett had no answer.
Because he knew she was right.
For years, Garrett had believed emotions made people vulnerable.
But Nora had shown him something different.
Maybe emotions did not make people weak.
Maybe they gave people something worth fighting for.
Later that afternoon, Garrett and Michael reviewed the final investigation details.
"The evidence points toward someone who had access to your father's old accounts."
Garrett looked at the documents.
His past was coming back piece by piece.
"The same person connected to my brother's situation?"
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
Garrett's jaw tightened.
"After all these years."
Michael remained quiet.
He knew this was not just a business matter.
This was personal.
Meanwhile, Nora returned to her office.
She tried to focus on work, but her mind kept returning to Garrett.
She understood why he was afraid.
She understood why he protected himself.
But she also knew something important.
A relationship built on silence could never survive.
Even if they were not officially together.
Even if neither of them had admitted what they felt.
Something existed between them.
Something real.
And real things required honesty.
That evening, Garrett found Nora in the foundation office.
"You should not be here alone."
She looked up.
"Neither should you."
For a moment, neither of them smiled.
The situation was too serious.
"I owe you an explanation."
Nora closed her laptop.
"I think I deserve one."
Garrett nodded.
And for the first time, he decided not to hide.
"My family had a betrayal years ago."
Nora listened quietly.
"I thought I knew who was responsible. I thought I had finally moved past it."
He paused.
"But now I realize it was never over."
Nora looked at him.
"And this person is connected to the leak?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Garrett looked down.
"Because I was afraid."
The honesty surprised her.
"Afraid of what?"
"That if you knew everything about my life, you would see me differently."
Nora's expression softened.
"Garrett."
She stepped closer.
"I already see you."
He looked at her.
"Not the CEO. Not the billionaire."
Her voice became gentle.
"Just you."
Those words affected him more than she realized.
Because they were the words he had secretly wanted to hear his entire life.
But before he could respond, his phone rang.
The moment he saw the message, his expression changed.
"What happened?"
Garrett handed her the phone.
Nora read the message.
A photograph.
A warning.
And a clear threat against the foundation project.
Her heart sank.
"This is because of me."
"No."
Garrett's answer was immediate.
"Don't think that."
"But if I wasn't involved"
"You would still have been targeted."
His voice was firm.
"This is about me. Not you."
For the first time, Nora saw something different in Garrett.
Not control.
Not anger.
Fear.
He was afraid of losing something.
Someone.
Her.
"I need you to step away," Garrett said.
Nora looked at him.
"You really don't know me at all."
"What?"
"I don't run when things become difficult."
"Nora"
"No."
She shook her head.
"You protect everything you love by pushing it away. I protect what matters by standing beside it."
Garrett became silent.
Because he had no argument.
That night, Garrett made a decision.
A decision that went against everything he had always believed.
He chose honesty.
He chose trust.
He chose Nora.
The next morning, Garrett held a meeting with the board.
Everyone expected him to focus only on protecting the company.
Instead, he made a different choice.
He revealed the truth about the investigation.
He admitted the company had vulnerabilities.
And instead of pretending everything was perfect, he chose transparency.
Because for the first time, he understood that protecting his empire did not mean hiding its weaknesses.
It meant having the courage to face them.
After the meeting, Michael approached him.
"You changed."
Garrett looked at him.
"Did I?"
"Yes."
Michael smiled slightly.
"You used to think trusting people was a mistake."
Garrett looked toward the window.
"Maybe I was wrong."
Later that day, Nora met Garrett outside the building.
"How did it go?"
"Better than expected."
She smiled.
"Good."
There was a quiet moment between them.
A moment filled with everything they had not said.
"Nora."
She looked at him.
"Yes?"
Garrett took a breath.
For once, he stopped calculating.
Stopped protecting himself.
"I don't know what this is."
Her heartbeat increased.
"But I know I don't want to lose it."
Nora looked at him.
And for the first time, Garrett Hayes allowed himself to be completely honest.
Not as a CEO.
Not as an heir.
Just as a man.
But neither of them knew that the person behind the betrayal was preparing one final move.
A move that would challenge everything they had built.
Their trust.
Their future.
And the feelings they were still afraid to name.
