Chapter Seven
Garrett Hayes had always known that success came with a price.
The bigger the empire became, the more people wanted a piece of it.
Some wanted opportunities.
Some wanted power.
And some wanted to watch everything collapse.
That was why Garrett trusted very few people.
But even the most careful person could miss the danger standing right beside them.
The morning started differently at Hayes Global Holdings.
The atmosphere was tense.
Employees whispered quietly in the hallways.
Executives moved quickly between offices.
Something had changed.
Garrett noticed immediately.
He always did.
He walked into his office, where Michael was already waiting.
"Tell me what happened."
Michael placed a folder on the desk.
"The confidential documents from the acquisition meeting were leaked."
Garrett opened the folder.
His expression remained calm, but the silence around him became heavier.
"When?"
"Last night."
"Who had access?"
Michael hesitated.
"Only senior executives and a few members of your personal team."
Garrett looked at him.
"So someone close to me."
"Yes."
The answer confirmed what Garrett feared.
The threat was not outside his company.
It was already inside.
For years, Garrett had built Hayes Global Holdings with patience and discipline.
Every decision.
Every investment.
Every risk.
He had protected the company because it represented more than money.
It represented everything he had sacrificed.
And now someone was trying to destroy it from within.
Meanwhile, Nora arrived at work unaware of the situation.
She immediately noticed the difference.
People were quieter.
The usual confidence around the company had disappeared.
She walked toward Garrett's office and found him standing near the window.
Not angry.
Not frustrated.
Just silent.
And somehow, that was worse.
"Garrett?"
He turned.
For a moment, she saw something in his eyes.
Not the CEO.
Not the billionaire.
A man who had been hurt.
"What happened?"
He looked away.
"Nothing you need to worry about."
Nora sighed.
"There it is again."
"What?"
"You always say that."
Garrett looked at her.
"Because I don't want you involved in problems that aren't yours."
Nora studied him.
"But I am already involved."
His expression changed slightly.
She placed the project documents on his desk.
"The foundation project connects my company with yours. If something affects Hayes Global Holdings, it affects my work too."
Garrett knew she was right.
But that wasn't the only reason he wanted to keep her away.
He was afraid.
Not for himself.
For her.
"The situation is being handled."
"By who?"
"Me."
Nora looked at him.
"Garrett, you don't have to carry everything alone."
The words were simple.
But they affected him more than she realized.
Because nobody said things like that to him.
People admired his strength.
They depended on it.
But nobody asked if he was tired.
Later that afternoon, Garrett called a private meeting with his team.
Michael stood beside him as they reviewed the possible sources of the leak.
"We need to check everyone involved with the acquisition."
Garrett nodded.
"No exceptions."
Michael looked at him.
"Even people you trust?"
Garrett's jaw tightened.
"Especially them."
The investigation continued throughout the day.
But the more Garrett looked into the situation, the more complicated it became.
The leaked information was not random.
Someone knew exactly what information would cause the most damage.
Someone understood the company.
Someone understood him.
That evening, Nora stayed late to finish the foundation proposal.
She noticed Garrett was still working.
"You haven't left."
Neither had he.
He looked at her.
"Neither have you."
She smiled slightly.
"Fair point."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence between them felt different now.
Less guarded.
More comfortable.
"Are you always like this?" Nora asked.
"Like what?"
"Trying to solve everything yourself."
Garrett looked down at the documents.
"Someone has to."
"Why does it always have to be you?"
The question caught him off guard.
Because he had never asked himself that.
Nora walked closer.
"People see your success and think you don't need anyone."
Garrett remained silent.
"But everyone needs someone."
His eyes met hers.
"And who do you need, Nora?"
The question surprised her.
She hadn't expected him to turn it around.
She looked away.
"I don't know."
But she did know.
She just wasn't ready to admit it.
A notification appeared on Garrett's phone.
His expression changed.
Nora noticed.
"What is it?"
He read the message again.
A new piece of information from the investigation.
The source of the leak had been narrowed down.
And the name attached to the evidence shocked him.
Because it was someone he never expected.
Someone who had been close to his company for years.
"What happened?"
Garrett locked his phone.
"Nothing."
Nora gave him a look.
"You really need a new answer."
Despite everything, a small smile almost appeared.
Almost.
But the seriousness returned.
"I need you to promise me something."
"What?"
"If things become difficult, you stay away from this."
Nora frowned.
"I can't promise that."
"Why?"
"Because I don't abandon people when they need help."
Garrett stared at her.
And once again, she reminded him why she was different.
That night, Garrett stood alone in his office.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
Someone inside his empire had betrayed him.
Someone he trusted.
But for the first time, his biggest concern wasn't the company.
It was Nora.
Because he knew something he had refused to admit.
The closer she came to him, the more vulnerable he became.
And vulnerability was something Garrett Hayes had spent his entire life avoiding.
Across the city, Nora looked out of her apartment window.
She knew Garrett was hiding something.
She knew he was facing a battle.
And she knew one thing for certain:
She wasn't going to walk away.
Not this time.
Because sometimes love did not begin with perfect moments.
Sometimes it began when two people chose to stand beside each other during the hardest ones.
And neither Nora nor Garrett realized that the secret threatening his empire was only the beginning.
