WHEN TRUST BEGINS TO BREAK

1092 Words
Chapter Nine Garrett Hayes had always believed that trust was something earned over time. Not given. Not assumed. Earned. For years, he had built his life around that belief. Every decision he made, every person he allowed close, every partnership he accepted was carefully calculated. Because he knew what happened when trust was placed in the wrong hands. People betrayed you. People lied. People took everything you built and used it against you. But Nora Bennett had slowly challenged everything he believed. She had walked into his carefully controlled world and refused to be intimidated by his wealth or his reputation. She had seen the person behind the name. And that was exactly why losing her trust frightened him more than losing a business deal. The morning after Garrett discovered the connection between the company leak and his past, everything felt different. The office that once represented success now felt like a place filled with unanswered questions. Every conversation sounded suspicious. Every familiar face looked unfamiliar. Garrett sat behind his desk, reading through the investigation reports again. There had to be something he missed. A detail. A mistake. Anything. But the evidence remained the same. The person responsible had access to information that only a few people knew. Including Nora. The thought immediately bothered him. Not because he believed she was guilty. He didn't. But because the possibility existed. And Garrett hated that. He hated that a part of him even considered it. Because Nora had done nothing except prove that she was different. A knock sounded at the door. Garrett looked up. Nora stood there holding a folder. "Can I come in?" He hesitated for a second too long. She noticed. A small change. But Nora noticed everything. "Of course." She walked inside. "You look like you haven't slept." Garrett looked back at his computer. "I've been busy." "You always say that." This time, he didn't respond. Nora placed the folder on his desk. "The revised foundation proposal." "Thank you." She studied him. Something was wrong. Not the normal stress he carried. Something deeper. "Garrett, what happened?" "Nothing." The answer came too quickly. Nora's expression changed. She wasn't angry. Just disappointed. "You're doing it again." "Doing what?" "Keeping me outside." Garrett looked at her. The truth was sitting right there. He wanted to tell her. He wanted to explain everything. But another voice in his head reminded him to be careful. To protect himself. To protect her. "You don't need to be involved in this." Nora went quiet. "This?" Garrett realized his mistake. "What do you mean by that?" she asked. He looked away. "Nora" "No." Her voice remained calm, but there was hurt behind it. "You don't get to decide what I can handle." The words hit him because they were true. Garrett was used to protecting people by keeping them away. But Nora didn't want to be protected through silence. She wanted honesty. "I am trying to keep you safe." "From what?" He didn't answer. And that silence told her everything. "You don't trust me." Garrett immediately looked at her. "That's not true." "Isn't it?" "Nora." "Garrett, you told me you found something. You looked at me like you wanted to say something, but you stopped yourself." She shook her head slightly. "I thought I was someone you trusted." "You are." "Then why do I feel like a stranger whenever things get difficult?" Garrett had no answer. Because he knew the problem wasn't Nora. The problem was him. He had spent years building walls and then wondered why nobody could reach him. Later that day, Nora left his office feeling more confused than before. She wasn't angry with Garrett. She understood that he had reasons for being guarded. But understanding someone did not mean never getting hurt by them. And for the first time since they met, she wondered if she had mistaken his silence for strength. That evening, Garrett received another update from the investigation. Michael entered his office. "We found another connection." Garrett looked up. "What connection?" "The person behind the leak wasn't trying to damage the company only." Michael paused. "They were trying to damage you personally." Garrett's expression hardened. "Why?" Michael placed a document on the desk. "Because they know your weakness." Garrett stared at the file. "What weakness?" Michael looked at him. "Nora." The room became silent. Garrett immediately rejected the idea. "No." "Garrett" "No." His voice was firm. But inside, fear had already taken hold. Because whoever was behind this knew exactly what mattered to him. And that meant Nora was no longer just connected to his life. She was a target. The next day, Nora arrived at her office and noticed something strange. A message had been left on her desk. No name. No explanation. Just a single sentence: Some stories are better left unwritten. Her heart tightened. She read it again. And suddenly, she understood. This was not only about Garrett anymore. Someone knew about her. Someone was watching. When Garrett found out, his entire expression changed. The calm CEO disappeared. The man behind the mask appeared. "You're stepping away from this project." Nora stared at him. "What?" "It's too dangerous." She shook her head. "No." "Nora, this isn't a discussion." Her eyes narrowed. "There it is again." "What?" "You making decisions for me." Garrett looked frustrated. "Because I know what happens when people get caught in my world." "And I know what happens when people push everyone away." The words silenced him. For a moment, neither of them spoke. They were both right. They were both afraid. And that was the problem. Fear was creating distance between them. "I don't need you to save me, Garrett." His expression softened. "I know." "Then what do you need?" The question stayed between them. Because the answer was simple. But difficult. He needed her to stay. He needed to trust her. He needed to stop believing that caring about someone was a weakness. But before he could answer, Garrett's phone rang. He looked at the screen. The expression on his face changed. Nora noticed. "Who is it?" Garrett slowly lowered the phone. "The person we've been looking for." Her heart stopped. "You found them?" He nodded. "But there's a problem." "What problem?" Garrett looked at her. "The person behind everything is someone we both know." And in that moment, Nora realized something. The truth they had been searching for was finally coming closer. But sometimes finding the truth did not bring peace. Sometimes it destroyed the last bit of safety you had left.
