Chapter 14

1347 Words
I listened to what Lin was saying about what happened, when Kris said telepathically, ‘What exactly do you know about her?’ I looked at him from the corner of my eye to see that he still hadn’t taken his eyes off Heather. I responded with, ‘I know enough to know she needs our help and protection.’ His eyes widened for a moment before he said, ‘Do you intend to tell me what is going on?’ I wanted to tell him but to be perfectly honest, it wasn’t my story to tell. I told him as much and as we talked telepathically we both listened to what Lin was saying about everything that happened to Kate while she was overseas. While listening I got the impression that he wasn’t saying everything. But we heard story after s********e were silly and fun and others were a bit heavier. The ones where Kate had been captured were the hardest to hear. I looked down at my watch and realized that we had been sitting here for three hours. I was about to say that when Lin got this very serious look on his face and said, “Kate, will you tell me what really happened with Ian? I know you haven’t given me the truth yet. You are only giving me sugar-coated fabrications, brilliant fabrications I might add, but that is all they are.” Kate looked down at her hands. From what I gathered she had only told him that Ian would beat her, she had yet to tell him that he would r**e her or that he would degrade her every chance he got. Kate looked up at him and said, “Are you sure you want to know?” Lin looked scared for a moment before he said, “Yes I’m sure. I need to know.” Kate nodded once then said something in Japanese. Lin responded and they went back and forth for a few minutes in Japanese. It was one of the few languages that neither I nor my cousin knew. Between the two of us we knew over 20 different languages.  Suddenly Lin shot up from the table and went on what seemed like a tirade in Japanese. Kate just sat there and took everything he had to say in solemn silence. He finally finished and Kate simply said, “If you are finished we need to head back to get our costumes now. It’s been nearly three and a half hours since we left. Our costumes should be done by now.” With those words she stood from the table and began to walk out of the restaurant. Heather followed her and Lin just stared for a few moments before he also followed. Kris looked at me and shrugged before we both stood up and followed after the rest of them. I jogged a little bit to catch up with Kate and said, “What was all that? It seemed like he was pretty mad about whatever you said to him.” Kate looked at me with a forlorn look in her eyes and said, “He asked for the truth so I gave it to him, but when I told him that the truth often hurt more than the lies he got mad. I kept trying to tell him that he didn’t want to really know what had happened but he wouldn’t listen. Once I told him the truth he couldn’t hold it in any longer and blew up.” I said, “Is that normal? You seemed to take all that yelling very well.” She smiled sadly and said, “I have gotten used to yelling, being with Ian made it so I kind of had to. I’m ok, but he did make some very valid points. I have lost myself and I’m not the woman he knew 5 years ago. I have changed and I’m not sure yet if it was for the better or not. My blowup will come, just not sure when,”  I didn’t know exactly what she was talking about but I could tell she was being honest. She seemed to be so patient, just waiting for the chance to do what needs to be done. Her heart is hurting because I think deep down she really cared about Ian and hearing whatever Lin had to say was not easy for her and it really hurt her. I wonder what will happen.  We all walked in silence back to the shop. When we got there Kate walked in first with the rest of us in tow. She talked with the store owner for a few minutes then we all got our costumes. We stepped back onto the street and Kate said, “So how about we all go back to my place? I’ll make dinner and we can all talk some more, besides I want to get to know you a little more Kris.” At the mention of his name his head snapped up towards her. He said, “Who, me? Why would you want to get to know me?” Kate said, “I get this funny feeling that I know you, I just can’t place from where.” Kris paled for a moment then nodded. I said, “So what’s for dinner?” Everyone laughed as Kate said, “I’m not sure yet. What sounds good to everyone?” Heather and Lin shared a look then said at the same time, “Shepard’s pie.” Kate laughed and said, “Ok and the surround sound wins. However if that’s what I’m making I’ll need a few things from Will and Liam. Lin can you run by and get them? William will know what I need just tell him I’m making shepherd’s pie. And before you ask they should be at the restaurant at this time of day. We will all head back to my place. See you there in about an hour.” Lin nodded and got into his skyline.  Kate said, “So who is riding with Kris, because from the way he was driving on the way here, I drive way to slow for him to be able to follow me.” Heather spoke up before I had the chance and said, “I will.” Kris looked a little scared at first then gave her a dashing smile and said, “As long as you don’t scare easy then I have no problem with it.” Heather laughed and said, “You are not going to be able to scare me. I like to go fast, at just about everything in life.” At the last part of it she flashed him a coy smile and batted her eyelashes. I simply shook my head and said telepathically, ‘You are in for a world of trouble cousin. Good luck with that one.’  Kris laughed and moved to his car and said, “Come on grey eyes, let’s go.” I saw Heather go pale then blush as she went to get in the car with him. I moved over to Kate’s expedition and took her costume and hung it in the back next to mine. We both got into the truck and I said, “So it’s just you and me. I hope you don’t mind.” Kate laughed and said, “I was hoping it would end up that way. I noticed that your cousin barely took his eyes off Heather, whereas Heather couldn’t seem to stop glancing at him through her lashes. I see romance in the air between them.” I laughed because I saw the same thing. We talked a little on the way home but mostly we just listened to the music she had playing.  As she predicted Kris’s car was there when we got back. But he hadn’t gone inside; instead he was protecting Heather with his .45 caliber. Kate slammed on the brakes and threw the expedition in park. Before I could even resister what was happening she was out of the truck with her weapon drawn and headed to the house. As we got closer we realized what made him not want to go inside. The door was slightly open and there was blood on the floor. We all went inside with guns drawn. What we saw there was not what we expected.
