Not only would she ask him for a reward afterward, making him think that the only thing she liked about him was his money.
Now that Zane was getting married, she was the one who would be getting dumped.
Joanne didn’t know what Mrs. Grey was worried about, but as the mother of her boss, she could only obediently comply with her request.
After work, Joanne didn’t go back to the apartment to change her clothes or even touch up her makeup.
She was just Zane’s secretary—she had been, she was, and she always would be—so there was no need for any special grooming.
When Joanne arrived at the hotel’s private room, Zane hadn’t yet arrived. Mrs. Grey was sitting in the main seat, chatting with Quinn.
Upon seeing Joanne, Mrs. Grey waved affectionately, “Miss Wren, come here. Let me introduce you to your future lady boss.”
Quinn was about to stand up, but Mrs. Grey stopped her, saying, “Stay seated. She’s Zane’s subordinate, and soon enough, she’ll be your subordinate too.”
Joanne knew that Mrs. Grey was deliberately trying to put her in her place, but with a smile on her face, she walked over to greet both women.
She respectfully greeted the guests at the table, but only a few bothered to glance at her. Joanne’s expression remained unchanged as she noticed the waiter was overwhelmed, so she took the initiative to help refill the tea and water.
Zane entered the room and immediately spotted Joanne.
She was still wearing the professional attire from work earlier, her off-white dress perfectly outlining her figure, and her exposed calves were as smooth as cream.
It wasn’t until Mrs. Grey spoke that Zane snapped out of his daze.
“Zane, why are you so late?” Mrs. Grey scolded lightly. “Quinn has been waiting for you for so long. Hurry up and go apologize to her.”
Before Zane could respond, Quinn’s gentle voice spoke, “It’s alright, I just arrived myself.”
The young lady from a prestigious family exuded natural grace in every movement. Her entire outfit easily cost seven figures.
Joanne lowered her gaze as she refilled Mrs. Grey’s cup. Fortunately, she had long known that she and Quinn were from different worlds, or she would surely feel inferior at this moment.
Zane, with his long strides, walked over and stopped in front of Joanne. “What are you doing here?”
Did he think she wanted to come?
Joanne rolled her eyes inwardly but maintained a calm expression.
She knew Mrs. Grey would answer for her.
Sure enough, Mrs. Grey patted Joanne’s hand and said approvingly, “Miss Wren handles things efficiently. Tonight’s family dinner is very important, so I asked her to come and help.”
Zane glanced at Joanne indifferently before quickly turning his attention elsewhere.
As sharp as she was, she couldn’t possibly not understand Mrs. Grey’s intentions for bringing her here.
But she came anyway, and didn’t even tell him in advance.
She was much calmer than he had imagined.
Mr. Grey and Mrs. Grey had been on bad terms for a long time, so tonight only Mrs. Grey and Zane had come from the Grey family.
The Bennett family was large, with Quinn’s grandparents, parents, and siblings—an entire family had arrived.
Together, the two families filled the entire table, leaving no room for Joanne.
Fortunately, Joanne had already prepared herself mentally, knowing she was here to assist and not to sit at the table.
Mrs. Grey didn’t embarrass her in front of everyone, so Joanne was just thankful. She didn’t dare to expect to be treated as one of the guests at the table.
The dinner didn’t last long, just over an hour, and Zane ended it by saying he had a video conference to attend.
Joanne, still standing and feeling sore, took the opportunity to ask a waiter to bring out a fruit platter, then slipped into the restroom to rest for a bit.
A few minutes later, just as she was about to leave the stall, she overheard Seraphina Bennett’s voice. “Sis, that secretary is really thick-skinned. She dares to show up at this kind of gathering.”
“I won’t allow you to speak like that,” Quinn replied. “Miss Wren is very discreet. It was Aunt Grey who asked her to come help tonight.”
Seraphina snorted. “She just comes when she’s called? There are waiters at the restaurant, right? I bet she’s after brother-in-law. She probably thinks Aunt Grey can’t see through her, but Aunt Grey has already figured out her scheming ways and deliberately gave her a lesson. She doesn’t even have the right to sit down and eat!”
Joanne didn’t let the words affect her in the slightest.
Since her father’s accident, she had heard worse, so these words were nothing—barely enough to hurt her.
She walked straight out, ignoring the two women as she passed by.
Quinn, surprised, called out to her and quickly caught up. “Sorry, Miss Wren, my sister speaks without thinking. She’s young and doesn’t know better. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Joanne smiled at her. “Miss Bennett, I hope you can understand the difference between ‘speaking without thinking’ and ‘spreading gossip.’”
With that, she ignored the stunned Quinn and the cursing Seraphina, turning back to the private room to say goodbye to Mrs. Grey.
Mrs. Grey took out a thick envelope from her platinum bag and handed it to her. “Thank you for your hard work tonight. Take this for some tea.”
Then Mrs. Grey took out another envelope and handed it to the waiter in the private room. Joanne quickly glanced at it; the thickness was identical to the one in her hand.
It wasn’t too much or too little—just enough to insult her.
“Thank you, Mrs. Grey.”
This was her payment for the night’s work. Joanne didn’t refuse and accepted the envelope with a smile.
Mrs. Grey’s smile deepened. “Miss Wren, do you have a boyfriend?”
