The scene had calmed down. Joanne ignored the gossiping whispers of her colleagues and adjusted her appearance in the mirror.
Her face didn’t hurt as much now, but it was still badly swollen. She applied several layers of powder to cover it up as best as she could.
The receptionist, who had been late to realize what had happened, came over to apologize, looking nervous. “I’m so sorry, Miss Wren! I just went to the bathroom and heard that you were being bullied. I promise I won’t let any unrelated people in again. About Mr. Grey...”
Seeing the young woman nearly in tears, Joanne smiled at her. “Don’t worry. I won’t report you to Mr. Grey. It’s not your fault.”
The receptionist sighed in relief, then cautiously asked, “Is your face okay? Do you want me to get some anti-swelling medication for you?”
“No need. It’s just a minor injury. It’ll swell down on its own in no time.” Joanne added, “Go back to your station now. If Mr. Grey comes and sees you’re not at your post, it’ll be a problem.”
After the receptionist left, Joanne glanced around and said in a flat tone, “Aren’t you all supposed to be working? If you don’t have anything to do...”
“Busy, busy!”
“My reports aren’t finished yet...”
Everyone scattered and returned to their workstations.
Joanne drank a glass of ice water to calm the frustration that had settled in her chest.
She couldn’t figure Quinn out, and she didn’t know if today’s drama had been Seraphina’s one-woman show or if it had been a coordinated act between the sisters.
Either way, Quinn now knew about her relationship with Zane, and if she didn’t leave, things were probably going to get much worse.
With Mrs. Grey lurking around, Joanne felt like she couldn't hold out much longer.
In that case, leaving seemed like the best option. After all, she had been planning her exit for six months.
The reason she hadn’t left before was indeed because of money, but sometimes, money wasn’t everything.
Moreover, with her current experience and qualifications, she believed she could find another good job even if she left Bos Group.
After getting her emotions in check, Joanne returned to her station. Her colleagues told her that Zane had arrived and asked her to go to his office.
Joanne nodded and, on the way, wrote up her resignation letter. She had expected him to simply agree to her leaving.
However...
“What happened to your face?” Zane didn’t even glance at her resignation letter, his dark eyes narrowing in displeasure.
Joanne’s face remained calm and her heart steady. “It’s nothing, just an allergy. Mr. Grey, please have a look at my resignation letter.”
Only then did Zane notice the resignation letter. He quickly skimmed through it, reading in silence, before coldly uttering one word: Reason.
Joanne explained, “It’s written there, personal reasons.”
It was clearly written in black and white. Was he blind?
Zane’s gaze became mocking, his tone cool. “Your employment contract states that you cannot resign for personal reasons.”
Joanne’s lips stiffened slightly. The Bos Group employment contract didn’t have this clause, but when she renewed it a year ago, Zane had indeed added this condition.
She had actually forgotten about it.
Zane sat in his large office chair, exuding an air of natural elegance and nobility. His long fingers tapped on the table.
His gaze lingered on her swollen cheek, his eyes flashing with a dark glint. “Do you need me to help you calculate the severance? Five times your annual salary, which is...”
Joanne quickly calculated in her mind. Her annual salary was 1.5 million, so five times that would be 7.5 million.
She could scrape together that amount, but she didn’t want to.
There were too many things she needed money for, and where she could save, she would.
So, she decided quickly, “Mr. Grey, it’s not that I want to terminate the labor contract. I have to leave. Your mother, Mrs. Grey, is worried that I might affect your relationship with Miss Bennett, and has already arranged a blind date for me. Should I really sacrifice my own happiness just to put her mind at ease?”
Zane met her gaze. “You don’t need to worry. I’ll take care of things with my mother.”
Joanne smiled sweetly, “No need, Mr. Grey. Mrs. Grey’s health isn’t good, so let’s not bother her with such small matters. Besides, we’ve already agreed from the start that either one of us can end this relationship whenever we want.”
Zane’s gaze darkened, “Are you serious?”
Joanne replied, “Of course.”
He could go his way, and she could find her own path—one full of opportunities.
Zane asked, “Is it because you’re unhappy at Bos Group, or have I treated you unfairly in some way?”
“No.” Joanne took a deep breath. “I’m very satisfied with this job. You’re a good boss, and the salary is generous. I just want to change jobs.”
Zane fell silent for a few seconds, his tone tinged with a hint of self-mockery. “So, I’m being dumped?”
Joanne replied, “Mr. Grey, stop joking. You’re getting married soon, and I’m planning to find someone suitable to settle down with and try to get married as soon as possible.”
Zane asked, “You want to get married? Why didn’t you mention this before?”
What was there to mention? Even if she did, he wouldn’t marry her.
It would be a joke, a self-inflicted humiliation.
Joanne didn’t want to waste words on this issue. “I’m grateful for your care over the past two years, Mr. Grey. I’ll always remember this kindness. Don’t worry, before I leave at the end of the month, I’ll make sure to hand over my work properly.”
Zane said, “I’ll give you a piece of advice. Even if Ethan goes bankrupt, he still might not be able to afford a diamond necklace.”
Joanne took a deep breath, making up her mind. “I’ll gather the severance money as soon as I can. Let’s part on good terms.”
Zane was so amused by her that he laughed, “You’re in such a hurry to become a boss’s wife?”
