Mrs. Grey got straight to the point: "Miss Wren, I've reconsidered. With your family here, transferring you to another branch wouldn't be ideal. A friend's company has an opening—would you like me to put in a word?"
Joanne was startled, trying to figure out her angle.
"That's kind of you, Mrs. Grey, but if the branch doesn't need me, I'll just find another job."
Mrs. Grey smiled. "With your skills, you'd be in high demand anywhere. I only worry about the strain of a long-distance relationship with Ethan. All that back-and-forth will be exhausting."
Joanne hesitated before answering. "I appreciate the thought. I'll stay put for now."
"Of course. Call me anytime if you need help. And regarding Zane..."
"Don't worry—I know what to say."
"That's a relief." The line went dead.
