Chapter 2

I carried two shopping bags home, and Lucy was curled up on the couch scrolling through her phone. She didn't even bother looking up when she heard the door open. I set the bags down on the coffee table in front of her. "Lucy, here are some bags and the necklace I got you." She gave the logos on the bags a lazy once-over and curled her lip. "This brand again? Jenny, you always bring me cheap stuff. That's so insincere." She flipped her phone face-down on the couch and looked up at me. "I grew up with William. Even though he knows how I feel about him, he's never once told me off. That means I've got a place in his heart, plain and simple. All I have to do is say the word and he divorces you. How long do you think you can keep acting all high and mighty? One day I'm gonna kick you out for good, and William's gonna be mine and mine alone." I opened my mouth, but in the end I didn't bother calling her out. I just lost every last bit of patience I had left for all this nonsense. William walked out of the music room, saw the look on my face, and came over to me in a few quick steps. He put an arm around my shoulder and lowered his voice. "Jenny, don't sweat it with Lucy. She's just a kid. She says whatever pops into her head. Come on, you're the older sister-in-law. Just cut her some slack, okay?" I turned my head to look at him. He gave me a little smile and headed into the kitchen. William tied on an apron and started pulling ingredients out of the fridge. In four years of being married to William, I'd always wanted to try his cooking. Lucy was always going on about how good her brother's food was, how when they were kids and their parents were busy, William would cook for her every day. Every time I went into the kitchen and asked him to make me a meal, he'd say his hands were for playing the piano now, not chopping vegetables. But tonight, he was cooking for me. On the table, there was a roast chicken, a plate of pasta, some roasted vegetables, a green salad, and a bowl of soup. William handed me a fork and knife. "Here, give it a try. Been a while since I cooked, so it might not be as good as before." I'd just cut a piece of the roast chicken and hadn't even lifted it to my mouth when Lucy got up from the couch, walked over to the table, grabbed the whole plate of chicken, and started dumping dish after dish into takeout containers. "Lucy, what the hell are you doing?" Hearing my voice, she didn't even lift her head. "There are stray dogs outside that haven't had dinner yet. I'm taking this to feed 'em." I stood up and put my hand on the bowl of soup she was packing. "I waited four years for this meal and you feed it to dogs?" Lucy finally looked up at me, a little annoyed. "What's wrong with feeding dogs? Dogs'll wag their tails at me after they eat. What are you gonna do after you eat, huh? Besides, my brother cooked this food, so I get to decide who eats it." William came out of the kitchen, still holding a spatula. Lucy spun around and pouted. "William, I just wanted to take some leftovers to feed the stray dogs in the neighborhood, and Jenny wouldn't let me. How can she be so heartless?" William frowned. He set the spatula down on the counter and walked over to me. "Jenny, you're really gonna make a big deal out of something this small? Feeding strays is a good deed. Why would you stop her?" I let out a cold laugh. "William, you promised me this meal four years ago. Four years, and this is the first time you've cooked for me. I haven't even had one bite, and she wants to throw it all to the dogs. You really think that's fair?" William's face went dark. "What's not fair about it? Those dogs out there have been hungry all day too. You skip one meal, so what? Besides, you're a grown woman. Fighting with a dog over food, you don't think people would laugh at you?" Lucy snorted beside us. "Come on, William, don't even bother with her. People like her don't know the first thing about compassion. She didn't have parents growing up, so she can't stand seeing anyone else happy."
