The cracked floor groaned beneath Emma's feet.
A rush of freezing air burst upward from the darkness below, carrying the smell of damp earth and rusted metal. Sheriff Reeves pulled his flashlight from his belt, but its beam flickered wildly as if the darkness itself resisted the light.
Another knock echoed beneath them.
Knock.
Then a second.
Knock.
The old broadcasting microphone switched on by itself.
Static filled the room before a familiar voice whispered through the speaker.
"Emma..."
She froze.
It was her mother's voice.
Her mother had died eight years earlier.
Reeves grabbed her arm. "Don't answer."
The whisper came again, softer this time.
"I've been waiting for you."
Emma took an involuntary step toward the microphone.
The sheriff switched it off.
The room fell silent.
Then every dusty radio console lit up at once.
Dozens of speakers began broadcasting different voices—children crying, people begging for help, frantic prayers, and the final words of those who had disappeared in previous cycles.
One message repeated above all the others:
"The door is already open."
The floor finally gave way.
Emma and Reeves plunged into darkness.
When they landed, they found themselves in a vast underground chamber carved into the mountain itself. Ancient stone walls surrounded a circular tunnel lined with thousands of handprints pressed into the rock, each marked with a name and a year.
Only the newest section was blank.
At the center of the chamber stood a massive black door covered in strange symbols.
It wasn't made of wood or steel.
It looked as though it had been carved from solid shadow.
Three fresh knocks came from the other side.
Emma realized the horrifying truth.
The knocking had never come from outside people's homes.
It had always come from behind this door.
And whatever waited beyond it had been trying to get out for a hundred years.
