Nate did not get an answer.
Emilia said Ashley talked like that. Said it was a joke. Said they could talk after practice. Then she went into the bathroom and stayed there long enough that leaving felt like the only way not to push the door in.
He left with her scent still on his skin.
That was the first problem. The bond did not care that she had locked a screen too fast. It sat in his chest the whole walk across campus, warm and sure, while his head kept replaying two words.
