Daisy’s POV
I couldn’t sleep later that night. I tossed and turned in bed thinking about that moment, and what exactly it meant. I couldn’t fathom it.
Does Sam know how I’ve always felt about him? Does he feel the same way too? Why did he randomly kiss me and why didn’t I stop him? What is wrong with me? My thoughts ran wild and I couldn’t recollect them. Like that, I ended up not sleeping the entire night. It was an endless cycle, me being excited and then the excitement turning into confusion.
It went on like that till the light of day came and I hadn’t gotten a wink of sleep.
I got up, did all the necessary and headed to the main kitchen to collect Sam’s coffee and bring it to him.
As I grabbed the tray from Maurice, a certain concern hit me.
How am I going to face him? Will it be awkward? How do I talk to him? Maybe I should smile when I hand him the cup of coffee. I had an internal monologue in my head.
I knocked twice on his door and as usual I heard his thick voice say “come in”
He was dressed in casual clothing and wiping his hair with the same towel he used on me when I stepped in. I didn’t know how to react.
“Good— good morning. You aren’t dressed? Aren’t you going to work today?” I asked, making sure I showed a small smile.
“No, we aren’t going out today. Mother is having a guest and I’m expected to be there” he said, continuing to wipe his hair.
I put the tray down on a stool next to him.
“Sam, about yesterday—” I said, and I was immediately interrupted by Sam.
“What about yesterday?” He intercepted.
Is he playing dumb? I can’t read Sam, I’ve never been able to read him and it bothers me. I thought.
“We had a moment, there was the whole —”
“The whole what?” He interrupted again.
“The kiss, Sam. The kiss. Did it mean anything to you? I’ve had questions on my mind. I couldn’t sleep. Did we do something wrong?” I asked.
Sam threw the towel around his neck. He stood in front of me and smiled. Grazing his thumb against my lips, something he loved to do.
He planted a short kiss on my lips that made my heart thump violently. I wanted more, but he made sure to keep it brief.
“Does that answer your question?” He asked.
It was such a vague a answer. It could mean anything and with Sam, there was chances that “anything” wasn’t going to be in my favor. Still I wanted to believe him. I needed to before my heart came bursting out of my chest.
I smiled, he smiled back, stroking my bangs out of the way with a finger to properly reveal my eyes.
“Your hair has grown too long” he said.
“Does it bother you?” I asked. I was totally in Sam’s control. I could feel it that my body and my thoughts were no longer my own at the moment.
“No. Leave it that way. It makes it easier to hide your tears when you cry” he said.
The phrase made no sense to me, but I left it be. I couldn’t let myself overthink.
A knock on the door broke I and Sam apart. I took up the coffee tray and regained my composure.
“Sammy, Sammy you in?” The voice called out. It was Magdalene. I was certainly at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Sam went back to sitting on the bed. He shot me a look that I understood. I had to look busy.
“Mom, do come in” he said, calmly as he usually talked to his mother. The man that kissed me the previous night and less than two minutes ago was far gone.
Magdalene turned the door knob and pushed the door open.
I was by the table, trying to act busy by arranging the books on Sam’s table.
“Good morning my lady. I’ll leave immediately” I said, picking up the tray of coffee that was barely touched.
Magdalene looked at Sam, and then at me.
“Carry on with your work. I won’t stop you” she said.
“Sammy you aren’t dressed already? You would make a man like Richfield stand in wait for you?” She asked.
“Of course not. How long till he gets here?” Sam asked his mom while taking off the casual shirt and putting on a formal attire.
“About 20 minutes. His driver called to inform me some minutes back.
“I see. If you ladies are done, could I have the room to myself now?” Sam asked.
“Of course, we’ll leave. I forget sometimes that you’ve gone and grown up into a man” Magdalene said, I followed right behind her, turning around to steal a glance at Sam again and our eyes met.
Contrary to what I thought, the guests were just two people. Maurice had already set the table and I waited in the dining with my hands held together as they dined.
I knew Richfield, he was a business associate of Tom which I had met a few times before. I didn’t know the young woman with him, she looked just about my age. It seemed like Sam and Magdalene already knew her well.
I wasn’t interested in the conversation so I spaced out.
“does this girl have to be here?” Richfield asked.
“She can be. It’s not like we’re sharing secrets. You came here today to discuss Katherine and Sam’s engagement right?” Magdalene said.
“We should have talked about it sooner, it’s sad that Tom didn’t know about our intentions to merge our families” Richfield said.
“I’m sure he wouldn’t want any other bride for his heir” Magdalene said, looking at me in a spiteful manner.
Sam is— getting engaged? Just what did those moments we had mean? I thought. My blood ran cold.
