Chapter 3

237 Words
A week before Chloe returned to the country, I got a phone call. After I answered, there was only silence on the other end, except for the sound of steady breathing. Just as I was about to hang up, "Clara, I'm coming home," Chloe's raspy voice came through, dripping with provocation. "Do you want to bet? All it takes is a crook of my finger, and Ryan will come running back to me." At the time, I didn't believe her. I knew Chloe was his first love. They had been college sweethearts and shared a long, beautiful history. But just a few days prior, Ryan had nestled in my arms and whispered tenderly, "Once I finish this film, let's have a baby. I want a child who looks just like us." A wave of warmth had filled my heart. Ryan had repeatedly declared his love, and we had promised to spend the rest of our lives together. Naturally, I trusted my husband. In a flat, cold tone, I had mocked Chloe, "Are homewreckers nowadays always this shameless and bold? We are married. He chose me. Whatever you two had is ancient history. You should really have some self-respect." Chloe chuckled, her tone thick with disdain. "Then let's wait and see." But now, remembering the trust I had placed in him back then felt like a stinging slap to my face. It burned with a fierce, searing pain.
