CHAPTER 2: DEAL WITH DARKNESS I didn’t let go of his hand immediately. There was something about the way he held mine, firm, steady, unshaken by the storm around us, that made me pause. It wasn’t comfort. It wasn’t warmth. It was control. The kind of control I had just seen destroy my entire life. I should have pulled away. I should have questioned him more, demanded answers, demanded a name. But I didn’t. Because deep down, I already understood something that couldn’t be undone, if I let go now, I would be alone again, hunted, weak, and eventually dead. So instead of pulling back, I tightened my grip slightly, lifting my chin despite the exhaustion weighing on my body. “If I’m trusting you,” I said quietly, “then I need to know who I’m trusting.” His eyes held mine, dark and unreadable, like he was measuring not just my words but the strength behind them. For a moment, he didn’t respond. The rain continued to fall around us, the sound filling the silence as he studied me in a way that made me feel like I was being tested. Then, slowly, he released my hand, stepping back just enough to create distance between us. “Names are dangerous,” he said finally. “They give people something to hold onto. Something to use against you.” I frowned slightly, irritation flickering beneath my exhaustion. “Everything is dangerous right now,” I replied. “That’s not a reason.” A faint shadow of a smile touched his lips, gone almost as quickly as it appeared. “Fair point,” he admitted. Then his gaze sharpened. “You can call me Dante.” I held his gaze, searching for any sign that it wasn’t his real name. There was none. But something told me that even if it wasn’t, it was the only name he intended to give me. For now, it was enough. “Alright, Dante,” I said slowly, testing the name on my tongue. “What happens next?” He glanced toward the alley entrance briefly, his posture shifting ever so slightly, like he was listening for something I couldn’t hear. “Next,” he said, “we leave before Marco’s men decide to expand their search.” That was all the warning I got before he turned and started walking, not even checking if I would follow. For a second, I stood there, staring at his back, the reality of what I was about to do settling heavily in my chest. I was about to walk away from everything I had ever known, with a stranger. But then again, everything I had known was already gone. I pushed myself forward, ignoring the ache in my legs as I followed him into the darkness. We didn’t speak as we moved through the narrow streets, the rain masking our footsteps and hiding us from view. Dante walked with purpose, every step precise, like he had already mapped out exactly where we were going. I struggled to keep up at first, my body protesting after everything it had been through, but I refused to slow down. Weakness wasn’t an option anymore. Not for me. Not in this world. After what felt like forever, he finally stopped in front of a black car parked in a shadowed corner of the street. He opened the passenger door without a word, his eyes briefly meeting mine as if to say this was my only choice. I didn’t hesitate. I got in. The car was silent as he drove, the city lights blurring past the window as exhaustion began to creep into my bones. Now that I wasn’t running anymore, everything hit me at once, the loss, the fear, the anger. My father was dead. Marco had taken everything. And I was sitting in a car with a man I barely knew, heading somewhere I didn’t recognize. “Where are we going?” I asked finally, breaking the silence. Dante didn’t look at me as he answered. “Somewhere safe.” I let out a quiet breath, leaning my head back against the seat. “Safe,” I repeated softly. The word felt foreign now, like something that no longer existed for me. “You don’t believe me,” he said. It wasn’t a question. I turned my head slightly to look at him. “I don’t believe in safe anymore,” I admitted. Something in his expression shifted at that, something subtle but real. “Good,” he said. “You shouldn’t.” That answer surprised me, but it also made sense in a way I couldn’t explain. In this world, safety was an illusion, something people told themselves to sleep better at night. The truth was, danger was always there, waiting, watching, ready to strike when you least expected it. I looked back out the window, my thoughts drifting despite my efforts to stay focused. “If you’re going to teach me,” I said after a moment, “then start by telling me the truth. Why me?” He was quiet for a second before responding. “Because you didn’t break,” he said simply. I frowned slightly. “You saw me for five minutes.” “That was enough,” he replied. The car slowed as we turned into a quieter part of the city, the buildings taller, darker, more isolated. Dante pulled into an underground parking garage and shut off the engine, the sudden silence almost deafening. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then he spoke. “Listen carefully,” he said, his voice low and serious. “From this moment on, you trust no one. Not me. Not anyone you meet. Trust gets people killed.” I turned to face him fully, my eyes narrowing slightly. “And yet you expect me to trust you enough to follow you here?” His gaze met mine, steady and unwavering. “I expect you to trust your need for revenge more than your fear.” The words hit deeper than I expected. Because he was right. That was exactly what I was doing. We stepped out of the car and moved toward a private elevator at the back of the garage. Dante pressed a code into the panel, and the doors slid open silently. I stepped inside, my reflection briefly catching in the mirrored walls. I barely recognized myself. My hair was soaked, clinging to my face and shoulders. My dress was torn and stained. My eyes… my eyes looked different. Harder. Colder. Like something inside me had already begun to change. “This is your last chance,” Dante said suddenly, his voice cutting through my thoughts. I looked at him. “To leave,” he continued. “Once those doors open, there’s no going back.” My chest tightened slightly, but I didn’t hesitate. “There’s nothing to go back to,” I said. The elevator doors opened to reveal a dimly lit penthouse, sleek and modern, but with an edge of something darker beneath the surface. It didn’t feel like a home. It felt like a place where decisions were made, dangerous ones. Dante stepped inside, and I followed, my senses on high alert as I took everything in. “You can stay here for now,” he said, removing his coat and setting it aside. “No one will find you.” I crossed my arms slightly, ignoring the chill that still clung to my skin. “And what’s the cost?” I asked. His lips curved faintly. “Everything,” he replied. I held his gaze, searching for hesitation, for doubt, for anything that might make me question this path. But there was nothing. Just certainty. Just darkness. Just truth. Slowly, I nodded. “Then I’ll pay it,” I said. The words felt heavy, final, like a contract being sealed. Dante studied me for a long moment, then gave a small nod of his own. “Good,” he said. “Because starting tomorrow… Alessia Romano stops existing.” My breath caught slightly. “And what do I become?” I asked. His eyes darkened, something almost dangerous flickering within them. “Something far more powerful,” he said. “If you survive.” That night, I didn’t sleep. I sat by the window, watching the city below, my mind replaying everything that had happened over and over again. My father’s face. The gunshot. Marco’s voice. The betrayal. It all burned into me, fueling something I couldn’t ignore anymore. This wasn’t just about survival. It was about justice. About power. About taking back what was stolen from me. And as the first light of dawn began to creep over the horizon, I made myself a promise. I wouldn’t just destroy Marco. I would take everything he had built on my father’s blood. I would rise higher than he ever could. And when the time came… I wouldn’t hesitate. Because in this world, mercy was weakness. And I was done being weak.
