15 Chapter 15: High Tension
The resonating rumblings of Orthenius’ escape startled the partygoers into a staggered stillness. An uneasy fright spread as the crowd watched guards run about the city. A sea of curious voices began, each abuzz with wild rumors and wanton speculation.
“What’s going on?” Kailana said.
“It sounded like an explosion,” Dastan replied.
Maya entered her mind’s eye. Nebulous visions of Orthenius destroying one of the cavern exits with a powerful bolt of lightning flashed through her mind. She gasped when she spotted Verutia escaping with her brother. “It’s Orthenius and Verutia. They’ve escaped!” Maya exclaimed.
“We have to keep this quiet to prevent a panic,” Dastan suggested.
Eakin emerged from the crowd trotting, gently pushing the last of the crowd aside.
