Elena's heart stopped.
Isabella stood in the doorway, her red dress gleaming in the dim light, her smile cold and victorious. Behind her, two large men blocked the only exit. There was no way out. No escape.
"did you really think i would let you find him without a fight?" Isabella stepped closer, her heels clicking against the concrete floor. "You are so predictable, Elena. So easy to manipulate."
elena moved in front of marcus, shielding him with her body. "what do you want?"
Isabella laughed. It was sharp and cruel. "What do I want? I want everything. the money. the power. the name. everything you stole from me."
"i did not steal anything from you."
"You took Adrian. you took the life i was supposed to have." Isabella's eyes burned with hatred. "And now, I am going to take everything from you."
Elena's mind raced. she needed to stall. she needed to think. "Adrian will find me. He will come for me."
"let him." Isabella smiled. "I am counting on it."
Selena's blood ran cold. "what do you mean?"
"i mean, this was never just about you, elena. you are the bait. adrian is the real target." isabella pulled out her phone and held it up. "i have already sent him a message. a little video of you standing in this basement. he is on his way right now."
elena felt the world tilt. "you are using me to trap him."
"exactly." Isabella's smile widened. "And when he gets here, I am going to destroy him. completely."
Marcus's voice came from behind her, weak but steady. "Elena, do not listen to her. She is trying to get inside your head."
Isabella's eyes flicked to Marcus. "ah, the dead man who is not so dead. I have been looking for you for a long time, marcus. you have been very good at hiding."
Marcus's face was pale, but his eyes were sharp. "I have been hiding from Victor, not from you."
"Victor is nothing. He is a broken old man with no power, no money, no future. I am the one who is going to take everything." Isabella stepped closer. "And you, Marcus, are going to help me."
"I will never help you."
"oh, I think you will." Isabella pulled out a small device and held it up. "This is a remote detonator. There are explosives planted throughout this mansion. If you do not cooperate, I will blow this place to pieces with all three of us inside."
Elena's blood turned to ice. "You are insane."
"maybe. but I am also very, very rich." Isabella smiled. "Now, here is how this is going to work. When Adrian arrives, you are going to tell him that you never loved him. that your entire marriage was a lie. that you only married him for the money."
Elena stared at her. "I will never say that."
"Yes, you will. Because if you do not, I will kill Marcus. Then I will kill your grandmother. and then, I will make sure Adrian suffers for the rest of his life." Isabella's voice was cold. "you are going to break his heart, elena. and you are going to do it to save the people you love."
---
Elena felt tears streaming down her face.
She looked at Marcus. her grandfather. the man who had been watching her her entire life. The man who had faked his own death to protect her.
She looked at Isabella. The woman who had been scheming for years. the woman who wanted to destroy everything she had built.
She had a choice. break Adrian's heart or let the people she loved die.
"there has to be another way," she whispered.
"There is no other way." Isabella's voice was sharp. "You have three minutes to decide. When Adrian walks through that door, you will say the words. or everyone dies."
Elena closed her eyes. Her mind was racing.
she had to think. She had to find a way out.
---
adrian arrived sooner than expected.
The basement door burst open, and he stormed in, his eyes wild, his fists clenched.
"Elena!"
"I am here." Her voice was shaking. "Adrian, listen to me."
he crossed to her in three quick strides. His hands cupped her face. "Are you okay? Did she hurt you?"
"I am fine. But Adrian, you need to listen."
He saw the tears in her eyes. fear. something flickered in his expression.
"what is going on?"
Elena opened her mouth. The words were there, ready to come out. I never loved you. It was all a lie.
but she could not say them.
She looked at Adrian. His gray eyes were filled with worry. love. trust.
she could not break him.
"I cannot do it," she whispered. "I cannot lie to you."
Adrian's eyes narrowed. "lie to me about what?"
Behind her, Isabella raised the detonator. "say the words, elena. or everyone dies."
Adrian saw the device in Isabella's hand. His face went white.
"Elena, what is she talking about?"
"I am sorry," Elena whispered. "I am so sorry."
she shoved him out of the way.
Isabella's finger pressed the button. She expected an explosion.
nothing happened.
Isabella stared at the detonator. she pressed it again. nothing.
"What is this?" she screamed. "why is it not working?"
a voice echoed from the shadows.
"because I disarmed them."
Everyone turned.
Marcus was standing. his hands were free. His face was pale, but his eyes were sharp. He was holding a small device in his hand.
"I have been watching you for years, Isabella. I knew exactly what you were planning." Marcus's voice was steady. "I made sure your explosives were useless."
Isabella's face contorted with rage. "You cannot do this! This is my plan! my victory!"
"Your plan is over." Adrian stepped forward. "and you are going to pay for everything you have done."
Isabella lunged for the door. But she was too late. The two men who had been blocking the exit were now blocking her.
"traitors!" she screamed. "all of you are traitors!"
the men grabbed her. They pulled her back.
Adrian crossed to Elena and took her hands. "Are you okay?"
she nodded. "I am fine. But Adrian, I need to tell you something."
He looked at her. "what?"
"I was going to lie to you. Isabella said she would kill everyone I loved if I did not break your heart." her voice cracked. "I could not do it. I could not lie to you."
Adrian pulled her into his arms. He held her tight.
"I know," he whispered. "I know you would never betray me."
she sobbed against his chest. "I love you. I love you so much."
"i love you too." he kissed her forehead. "and i am never letting you go."
---
Marcus walked toward them. His face was lined with exhaustion, but there was a smile on his lips.
"i am sorry i never reached out," he said quietly. "i was trying to protect you."
Elena looked at him. "you faked your own death. you hid for decades. all for me?"
"all for you." Marcus nodded. "Your mother was the only family I had left. When she died, I made a promise to protect you. and I have been keeping that promise ever since."
elena felt tears streaming down her face. "thank you," she whispered. "thank you for everything."
Marcus opened his arms. Elena stepped into them. She hugged her grandfather for the first time.
Adrian watched them, a small smile on his face.
and then he saw someone standing at the top of the stairs.
victor.
---
Victor Blackwood was not broken. He was not defeated.
He was standing at the top of the basement stairs, his cane in his hand, his eyes cold and calculating.
"Hello, Adrian," he said. "I see you have found my brother."
adrian's face went pale. "victor. you are supposed to be in hiding."
"I was." Victor descended the stairs slowly. "but I could not resist the opportunity to see my grandchildren."
Elena pulled away from Marcus. Her heart was pounding.
"You are not welcome here," she said.
"I am welcome everywhere, Elena. I am the head of the Blackwood family." Victor stopped a few feet away. "And I have a proposition for you."
Adrian stepped in front of Elena. "We are not interested."
"Let me finish." Victor looked at Elena. "I know about the documents. I know about Marcus. and I know that you are the key to the family's future."
Elena stared at him. "what are you talking about?"
"You are my daughter, Elena. my blood. my legacy." Victor smiled. "I want to make you my heir. All of this. the company. the money. the power. it can all be yours."
Elena felt the world tilt.
she could have everything. The legacy her mother had been denied. the power that had been stolen from her. the future she had never dared to dream.
but it came with a price.
she would have to embrace the man who had destroyed her mother's life.
she would have to become a blackwood.
