The Decision

Elena did not remember walking home. One moment she was standing in the rain, staring at that text message. The next moment she was inside her small apartment, dripping water onto the worn wooden floor, her hands still shaking. She locked the door. Deadbolt. Chain. Everything. Then she leaned against it and slid down to the floor. The apartment was silent. Too silent. Usually, she filled the space with music, with the hum of the television, with anything to drown out the quiet. But tonight, the silence pressed in on her like a living thing. She pulled out her phone. The text was still there. We are always watching. She deleted it. Then she deleted it again from the recently deleted folder. As if that would make it disappear. As if that would make them stop watching. She pressed her palms against her eyes. Her grandmother. Her grandmother was the only reason she had gone to that hotel. The only reason she had listened to a stranger's proposal. The only reason she had even considered selling her life to a man who looked at her like she was a spreadsheet. And now, because of that decision, someone was threatening her. Someone had been following her for weeks. Someone had stood outside her grandmother's hospital room in the middle of the night. She thought about her grandmother's face. That small, lined face with the soft eyes that had always looked at her with so much love. The woman who had raised her, who had worked double shifts, who had sacrificed everything. Elena could not lose her. She could not. The thought alone made her chest feel like it was caving in. Her phone buzzed again. She flinched. But it was not another threat. It was Adrian. You are not safe alone. Come back to the hotel. I will protect you. She stared at the message. The words were simple. There was nothing romantic about them. He was not trying to win her over. He was stating a fact. And he was right. She was not safe alone. Someone had been following her for weeks. They knew where she lived. They knew where her grandmother was. They knew everything. She typed back. Why? His reply came within seconds. Because you are the only person who has looked at me like I am just a man. That matters more than you know. Elena stared at the screen. Her heart was pounding. She did not know if it was from fear or something else. She stood. Her legs were weak. Her head was spinning. But she made a decision. She packed a small bag. Clothes. Her grandmother's favorite photo. The pendant around her neck. Nothing else. She left her apartment without looking back. --- The ride back to the hotel was silent. The driver Adrian sent was professional. He did not ask questions. He did not look at her in the rearview mirror. When she arrived, Adrian was waiting in the lobby. He was still in his suit, but his tie was loosened. His hair was slightly disheveled. He looked like a man who had not slept. He did not say anything when he saw her. He just crossed the lobby, took her bag, and led her to the private elevator. The ride up was silent. When they reached the penthouse, he set her bag inside the door and turned to face her. "You came back." "You said you would protect me." "I will." She looked at him for a long moment. "Why? Why do you care what happens to me?" He hesitated. Then he said something that surprised her. "Because I know what it is like to be alone. And I would not wish that on anyone." She did not know what to say. Adrian gestured toward the hallway. "Your room is the second door on the left. There is a keypad. The code is your grandmother's birthday. I had Mason look it up." Elena blinked. "You put my grandmother's birthday on the door?" "It is the only thing that would make you feel safe here." She felt something crack open in her chest. Something she had been holding tight for a very long time. "Thank you," she whispered. He nodded once. Then he turned and walked away. Elena watched him go. And for the first time since she had walked into that hotel suite, she felt something other than fear. She felt hope. --- The next morning, Elena woke to sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. For a moment, she did not know where she was. Then the memories crashed back. The proposal. The photograph. The threats. She sat up quickly. Her heart was racing. There was a knock on the door. "Miss Monroe." Charlotte's voice. "Mr. Blackwood would like to see you in the study." Elena dressed quickly. She did not have many options. The clothes she had packed were simple. She looked like a woman who did not belong in a penthouse like this. She did not care. The study was at the end of the hall. She pushed the door open. Adrian was standing at the window, the same position he had been in the first time she saw him. But this time, there was something different about him. Something softer. "You should sit," he said. Elena took a seat across from him. "What happened?" "I found out who sent the photograph." Her blood ran cold. "Who?" Adrian turned to face her. "Gregory. My cousin. He has been watching you for three weeks." "Three weeks?" "Before I ever contacted you." She felt her stomach drop. "Why?" Adrian's jaw tightened. "Because he knows who you are, Elena." She stared at him. "What do you mean?" "Your mother. She was not just anyone." He paused. "She was Marcus Blackwood's daughter. She was my aunt. And you, Elena, are Blackwood." The room spun. She gripped the arms of the chair. "That is not possible." "It is. Marcus Blackwood was my father's brother. He died years ago. But before he died, he had a daughter. Your mother. She was erased from the family records after she left. No one spoke of her. No one was supposed to know she existed." Elena shook her head slowly. "If she was erased, how does Gregory know?" "Because he has been searching. He wanted leverage against me. He found your mother's trail. And he found you." The pendant at her throat burned against her skin. Her mother's pendant. The only thing she had left. "This does not change anything," she said. "I am still Elena Monroe. I am still nobody." "You are nobody in the way that matters most," Adrian said quietly. "You are the heir who was never supposed to exist. And Gregory is afraid of you." "Why would he be afraid of me?" "Because if the board finds out you exist, you have a claim to the company. A stronger claim than he does." Adrian's eyes held hers. "That is why he is watching you. That is why he sent the threat. He wants to scare you away." Elena felt like she could not breathe. "So what do I do now?" Adrian crossed the room and knelt in front of her. His hand covered hers. His voice was barely a whisper. "Marry me, Elena. Not because I need a wife. Not because I need to save the company. But because I want to protect you. And the only way I can do that is if you are mine." She looked at him. Really looked at him. The cold billionaire was gone. In his place was a man who was afraid. Afraid for her. Afraid for himself. "Okay," she whispered. "I will marry you."
