The penthouse was suffocating.
Elena stood by the window, staring at the city below, but she did not see it. Her mind was trapped in the past. In the words Isabella had spoken. In the photograph that had shattered everything she thought she knew about herself.
Victor Blackwood was her father.
The man who had destroyed her mother's life. The man who had tried to erase her from existence. The man who had killed Adrian's father. He was her blood.
She pressed her forehead against the cold glass. Her reflection stared back at her. Hollow. Broken.
Adrian was behind her. She could feel his presence. His warmth. But she did not turn around.
"Elena," he said softly. "Please look at me."
"I cannot."
"Yes, you can."
She felt his hand on her shoulder. Gentle. Steady.
"I am not going anywhere," he said. "I told you that. I meant it."
She finally turned to face him. Her eyes were red. Her cheeks were wet.
"How can you still look at me?" she whispered. "How can you still want me?"
He took her face in his hands. His gray eyes locked onto hers.
"Because you are not Victor. You are not his sins. You are not his blood." His voice was fierce. "You are Elena. The woman I love. The woman who saved me. That is all that matters."
"But your father."
"My father is dead. Victor killed him. And I will spend the rest of my life making sure Victor pays for what he did." He leaned closer. "But I will not let that destroy what we have. I will not let him win."
Elena stared at him. She wanted to believe him. She needed to believe him.
"I love you," she whispered. "I love you so much it terrifies me."
He smiled. Small. Tender. "Good. That is how I feel too."
---
The next morning, Elena's grandmother was waiting for her in the study.
The old woman sat in a chair by the fireplace, a cup of tea in her hands. Her face was lined with worry. Her eyes were filled with tears.
"Sit down, sweetheart," she said. "We need to talk."
Elena sat across from her. Her heart was pounding.
"Grandma, I need to ask you something. And I need you to be honest with me."
Her grandmother nodded slowly.
"Was Victor Blackwood my father?"
The silence stretched between them like a chasm.
Her grandmother closed her eyes. Tears streamed down her wrinkled cheeks.
"Yes," she whispered. "He was."
Elena felt the words hit her like a physical blow.
"Why did you not tell me?"
"Because I was trying to protect you." Her grandmother's voice cracked. "Your mother begged me to keep it a secret. She said if Victor ever found out you were his, he would destroy you. He would take you away. He would hurt you."
Elena shook her head slowly. "He hurt her anyway."
"Yes. He did." Her grandmother reached out and took her hand. "But your mother was brave. She ran away. She married a good man who loved her. She gave you his name. She tried to give you a normal life."
"But it was all a lie."
"It was a lie to protect you." Her grandmother squeezed her hand. "Your mother loved you more than anything in this world. She sacrificed everything for you. Do not let that be for nothing."
Elena stared at her grandmother's hand. The hand that had held her when she was a child. The hand that had fed her. I cared for her. Raised her.
"Victor," she whispered. "He is a monster. He is the reason my mother was erased. He is the reason she died alone."
"Yes."
"How do I carry that? How do I carry on being his daughter?"
Her grandmother reached up and touched her face.
"Because you are not his daughter. Not really. You are your mother's daughter. You are my granddaughter. You are Elena Monroe." She smiled. "And you are one of the bravest people I have ever known."
Elena fell into her grandmother's arms. She sobbed. She let go of everything she had been holding inside.
And when she finally pulled back, she felt lighter. Not healed. But lighter.
"What do I do now?" she asked.
Her grandmother smiled. "You fight. You fight for your family. You fight for your future. And you never let Victor Blackwood win."
---
Elena found Adrian in his study. He was on the phone. His voice was sharp. Tense.
"Yes, I understand. No, I do not agree. I will handle it."
He hung up and turned to her. His face was pale.
"What happened?" she asked.
"Isabella filed a lawsuit. She is claiming that our marriage is invalid. She is saying that I am still legally bound to her because of an old contract."
Elena's blood ran cold. "Can she do that?"
"She can try." Adrian crossed to her. "But I will fight it. I will fight anything she throws at us."
Elena looked into his eyes. She saw the fear there. But she also saw determination.
"What do you need me to do?"
Adrian took her hands. "I need you to stay with me. I need you to trust me. I need you to be my partner in this."
She squeezed his hands. "I am not going anywhere."
---
Later that night, Elena sat alone in the library.
She had found an old journal in her grandmother's belongings. It was her mother's. The pages were yellowed and fragile. The ink was faded.
She opened it carefully.
June 14, 1996. I found out I am pregnant today. I am terrified. Victor will never let me keep this baby. He will never let me leave. But I have to try. For my child. For myself. I have to find a way out.
Elena read on.
July 3, 1996. I told Victor about the baby. He was furious. He said I was trying to trap him. He said I would regret this. I have never been more afraid in my life. But I will not let him take my child.
August 22, 1996. I ran away. I left everything behind. The house. The money. The name. I do not care about any of it. I only care about keeping my baby safe. I am going to start a new life. I am going to be someone else.
Elena turned the page.
September 15, 1996. I met a man today. His name is Daniel Monroe. He is kind. Gentle. He does not know anything about my past. He does not ask questions. He just wants to take care of me. I think I might be falling in love with him.
October 1, 1997. Elena is born. She is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I look at her, and I know I made the right choice. She will never know about Victor. She will never know about the Blackwood name. She will only know love.
Elena closed the journal. Tears were streaming down her face.
Her mother had sacrificed everything. Her name. Her identity. Her entire past. All to protect her.
And now it was Elena's turn to protect her mother's legacy.
---
She found Adrian in the living room. He was staring at the fire, his face troubled.
"Adrian."
He turned to her. She crossed to him and took his hands.
"I know who the voice on the phone was," she said. "The one Isabella was talking to."
Adrian's eyes widened. "Who?"
"It was Victor. Victor is still out there. He is the one pulling the strings."
Adrian's face went pale. "How do you know?"
Elena held up the journal. "My mother wrote about it. Victor has been controlling Isabella from the beginning. He wants to destroy us. He wants to take everything."
Adrian's jaw tightened. "Then we have to stop him."
"Yes." Elena's voice was steady. "And we will. Together."
---
But even as she said the words, Elena knew the truth.
Victor was not the only threat.
Isabella was still out there. The lawsuits were still coming. And somewhere, in the shadows, someone else was watching.
Her mother had written about it in the journal. The final entry.
No matter what happens, my daughter must never know the full truth. Some secrets are meant to stay buried. Some truths are too dangerous to uncover.
Elena had uncovered the truth. But she had a feeling that there was more. Something her mother had been too afraid to write down.
Something that would change everything.
