The Exchange

The warehouse loomed in front of them like a grave. Elena stood in the shadows across the street, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat. The documents were tucked inside her jacket, pressed against her chest like a second heartbeat. Her mother's legacy. Her mother's truth. Adrian was beside her, his hand wrapped around her wrist. His grip was firm. Grounding. "You do not have to do this," he whispered. "Yes, I do." "Elena." "Adrian." She turned to look at him. The streetlights caught his face, illuminating the worry in his gray eyes. "My grandmother is in there. I am not leaving without her." He held her gaze for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Five minutes," he said. "If you are not out in five minutes, I am coming in." "You promised." "I promised I would let you go in alone. I did not promise I would let you die." She opened her mouth to argue. But she knew he was right. She could not face Gregory alone. Not really. "Five minutes," she agreed. --- The warehouse door groaned as she pushed it open. The inside was dark. Cold. Dust hung in the air like ghosts. Broken machinery littered the floor. And in the center of the room, tied to a chair, sat her grandmother. She was alive. She was conscious. But her face was pale. Her eyes were hollow. "Elena," her grandmother whispered. "You should not have come." "I had to." A slow clap echoed through the warehouse. Gregory stepped out of the shadows. His smile was cold and cruel. "Bravo, cousin. I did not think you had the nerve." "Let her go." "As soon as I have what I want." He extended his hand. "The documents. Now." Elena pulled the folder out of her jacket. She held it up. "Release my grandmother first." Gregory laughed. "You are in no position to make demands." "Neither are you." Elena's voice was steady. Hard. "I have the documents. You have my grandmother. We trade. That is the deal." Gregory studied her for a long moment. Then he gestured to one of his men. The man walked over and untied Elena's grandmother. Her grandmother stood on shaky legs. She looked at Elena with tears in her eyes. "Go," Elena said. "Get out of here." "Elena." "Go. I will be right behind you." Her grandmother hesitated. Then she shuffled toward the door. She did not look back. Gregory watched her go. Then he turned back to Elena. "The documents." Elena held them out. But she did not release them. "One more thing," she said. Gregory's eyes narrowed. "What?" "Why did you do all of this? Why not just ask me for the documents?" Gregory smiled. It did not reach his eyes. "Because you would not have given them to me. Not willingly. You are too much like your mother." "You knew my mother?" "I knew of her." He stepped closer. "She was a fool. She had everything. Wealth. Power. A family that could have given her the world. And she threw it all away because she could not keep her mouth shut." "She stood up for what was right." "She destroyed herself." Gregory's voice was cold. "And she destroyed her family in the process." Elena stared at him. Something clicked into place. "You hated her," she said. "You hated her for leaving." "She made us look weak. She exposed our secrets. She ruined our reputation." Gregory's eyes were burning. "And now you have done the same thing. You have found her documents. You have married the enemy. You are a threat, Elena. And I cannot allow threats to exist." Elena felt the cold crawl up her spine. "What are you saying?" "I am saying that I will not let you destroy everything I have worked for." He lunged for her. Elena stumbled back. She dropped the folder. It fell to the floor, pages scattering across the concrete. Gregory grabbed her arm. His grip was iron. His eyes were wild. "You should have stayed away," he hissed. "Let go of me!" "No." Elena fought. She clawed at his hand. She kicked at his legs. But he was too strong. And then she heard a sound. A door bursting open. Gunfire. Screaming. And then Adrian was there, pulling her away from Gregory, his body shielding hers. "Run!" he shouted. "Now!" Elena ran. --- She burst out of the warehouse and into the night. Her grandmother was standing by the car, her face white with fear. "Get in!" she screamed. Elena jumped into the driver's seat. Her hands were shaking so hard she could barely grip the steering wheel. She fumbled with the key. The engine roared to life. Behind her, she could hear shouting. More gunfire. And then Adrian was running toward the car. His face was streaked with blood. His shirt was torn. "Go!" he shouted. She slammed her foot on the gas. The car tore away from the warehouse. Elena watched the building shrink in the rearview mirror. She watched Adrian's face in the passenger seat, pale and bleeding. "Adrian," she whispered. "Adrian, you are hurt." "It is just a scratch." He winced. "I have had worse." She did not believe him. But she did not argue. They drove in silence. Her grandmother was in the backseat, her eyes closed, her breathing shallow. Elena's heart was still pounding. "What happened?" she asked. Her voice was barely a whisper. "Gregory had more men than I expected. They were waiting." Adrian pressed a hand to his side. "But I got you out." "You got us out." "Same thing." She looked at him. The blood. The exhaustion. The determination in his eyes. "Thank you," she said. He looked at her. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he reached over and took her hand. "I would do it again," he said. "I would do it a thousand times." Elena felt something crack open in her chest. Something she had been holding back since the moment she met him. She squeezed his hand back. --- When they arrived at the penthouse, Mason was waiting. "Sir, what happened?" "Gregory," Adrian said. "He knows everything." Mason's face went pale. "The documents?" "They are gone." Elena's voice was hollow. "I dropped them. He has them now." Adrian looked at her. "It is okay." "It is not okay. My mother's legacy. Everything she left behind. It is all gone." Adrian took her face in his hands. His gray eyes locked onto hers. "We will get them back," he said. "I promise you, Elena. We will get them back." She stared into his eyes. She wanted to believe him. She needed to believe him. But in her heart, she knew the truth. Gregory had won. For now. --- The next morning, Elena woke to an empty bed. Adrian was gone. She found him in the study, staring at his phone. His face was pale. "What happened?" she asked. He looked up at her. His eyes were hollow. "Gregory released the documents," he said. "Not all of them. Just enough." "Just enough for what?" Adrian handed her the phone. Elena read the headline. BLACKWOOD HEIR EXPOSES FAMILY SECRETS. VICTOR BLACKWOOD ACCUSED OF COVERING UP BUSINESS SCANDAL. EVIDENCE SUGGESTS COMPANY KNOWLEDGE OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. Elena's blood ran cold. "He is framing Victor," she whispered. "Worse." Adrian's voice was empty. "He is framing me." --- Elena stared at the screen. At the bottom of the article was a photograph. A photograph of Adrian. Standing in the warehouse. Holding the documents. The caption read: ADRIAN BLACKWOOD ALLEGEDLY IN POSSESSION OF INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE. COULD THE CEO HIMSELF BE INVOLVED? Elena felt the room tilt. "Adrian," she whispered. "No." He looked at her. His gray eyes were broken. "They are going to come for me," he said. "The board. The police. Everyone." "We will fix this." "There is no fixing this, Elena." His voice cracked. "I am going to lose everything." She crossed the room and took his face in her hands. Her eyes burned into his. "No," she said. "You are not going to lose everything. Because you have me." He stared at her. His eyes searched hers. "Do you mean that?" "Yes." She leaned closer. "I mean every word." She kissed him. It was not a gentle kiss. It was desperate. Furious. Full of everything she had been holding back since the moment she met him. When she pulled away, his eyes were wide. "Elena." "Shut up," she said. "We are going to fight this. Together. And we are going to win." He looked at her for a long moment. Then he smiled. Small. Broken. "Okay," he said. "Together." --- But even as she held him, Elena knew the truth. Gregory had won this battle. But the war was just beginning. And she had no idea what was coming next.
