When Hearts Begin To Speak

The university campus was unusually peaceful as the second semester began. The excitement that came with resumption had settled, and students had returned to the routine of lectures, assignments, and campus activities.

For Ethan and Sophia, however, something had changed.

Their friendship was no longer new.

It had become one of the most important parts of their daily lives.

"I wasn't sure whether you had breakfast," he said, placing one cup gently on her desk.

"I'll be expecting good news."

Outside, the campus was quiet.

The streetlights illuminated the pathways as they slowly walked toward the hostel.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable.

It was peaceful.

Sophia finally broke it.

"Ethan?"

"Hmm?"

"Can I ask you something?"

Ethan thought for a moment.

"My mother."

Sophia looked at him.

"When my father died, she raised me almost entirely on her own."

Sophia's eyes softened.

"I'm so sorry."

Ethan smiled gently.

"Don't be."

"Those experiences taught me never to take opportunities for granted."

"They're the reason I want to succeed."

"So I can give her the life she deserves."

Sophia felt a lump in her throat.

She admired Ethan before.

Now she respects him even more.

Without thinking, she said softly,

The week of the business innovation competition finally arrived.

Excitement filled the Faculty of Business Administration as students made last-minute adjustments to their presentations. Posters decorated the auditorium, judges from leading companies occupied the front seats, and lecturers moved around ensuring everything was in place.

Backstage, Sophia took a deep breath.

"I don't know why I'm so nervous," she admitted.

Ethan smiled reassuringly.

"You've prepared for this more than anyone I know."

"What if I forget my lines?"

"You won't."

"And if you do, I'll be right beside you."

Sophia smiled.

"Thank you."

His calm voice eased her fears.

Just then, Professor Adebayo walked over.

"Ethan, Sophia, you're the final presenters."

"I've read your proposal summary."

"It is impressive."

"But remember, confidence is just as important as preparation."

"We won't let you down, sir," Ethan replied.

A few minutes later, their names were announced.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Ethan Adeyemi and Sophia Daniels."

The audience applauded as they walked confidently onto the stage.

For the next twenty minutes, they presented their proposal with clarity, passion, and teamwork.

Ethan explained the financial structure of the business model, while Sophia demonstrated how the platform would help young entrepreneurs gain access to affordable training, mentorship, and digital tools.

The judges listened attentively.

When the presentation ended, the auditorium erupted in applause.

The question-and-answer session was challenging, but Ethan and Sophia answered every question with confidence.

As they left the stage, Sophia let out a long breath.

"We actually did it."

Ethan laughed.

"We did."

An hour later, everyone gathered for the announcement of the results.

The dean stepped onto the stage holding an envelope.

"In third place..."

Applause filled the hall.

"In second place..."

More applause followed.

Sophia reached for Ethan's hand without realizing it.

He gently squeezed it, silently encouraging her.

"And the winners of this year's Business Innovation Competition are..."

He paused dramatically.

"...Ethan Adeyemi and Sophia Daniels!"

The auditorium exploded with cheers.

Amira jumped to her feet.

"I knew it!"

Daniel laughed as he applauded loudly.

The two friends walked onto the stage to receive their certificates, scholarship awards, and a large trophy.

As flashes from cameras lit up the stage, Ethan looked at Sophia.

"We make a pretty good team."

Sophia smiled.

"The best."

"Sophia..."

She looked at him.

"Yes?"

"I've been thinking about something for a long time."

Her heart began to race.

"I value our friendship more than you know."

"And because I value it so much, I don't want to rush anything."

Sophia listened silently.

"I believe relationships should be built on friendship, trust, respect, and God's guidance."

"So..."

He smiled gently.

"I'm not asking you for an answer tonight."

"I'm only asking if you'll allow us to continue getting to know each other—with purpose."

Sophia felt tears gathering in her eyes.

She had prayed for someone who would value her heart before her appearance, someone who would honor God in the way he treated her.

Standing before her was that person.

She smiled through happy tears.

"I'd like that very much."

Ethan smiled, relief washing over him.

"Then let's promise each other something."

"No matter what the future brings..."

"We'll always be honest with each other."

Sophia nodded.

"I promise."

As they shook hands beneath the glow of the hostel lights, neither of them realized that this simple promise would one day grow into sacred vows.

Vows that would be tested by ambition, distance, heartbreak, loss, illness, forgiveness, and faith.
