The weeks that followed passed quickly, and university life slowly became a routine for Sophia.
She settled into her classes, became close friends with her roommates, and earned the respect of her lecturers through her dedication and punctuality. Every assignment was completed on time, and every lecture note was carefully organized.
One thing, however, had become a constant in her daily life.
Ethan.
It had started with sharing a seat during lectures.
Then they began walking to classes together.
Soon, they were studying together in the university library, discussing business ideas over lunch, and encouraging each other before every test.
Their friendship grew so naturally that neither of them noticed how important they had become to one another.
One afternoon, after a long lecture, Ethan found Sophia sitting alone beneath a large mango tree near the faculty building. She was reading a business management textbook, completely absorbed in its pages.
He smiled as he approached.
"I should have guessed I'd find you studying."
Sophia looked up and laughed.
"And I should have guessed you'd say that."
Ethan sat beside her.
"You know, it's healthy to take a break once in a while."
"I am taking a break," she replied, closing the book.
"I'm just spending it with a textbook."
They both laughed."I guess people like creating stories."
Sophia laughed.
"They're very imaginative."
Although neither of them admitted it, their friendship was beginning to attract attention.
As the semester progressed, Ethan and Sophia became known as one of the most hardworking pairs in their department.
Whenever there was a group assignment, classmates hoped they would be on the same team because they always produced excellent work.
Their lecturers noticed it too.
One afternoon, Professor Adebayo returned their business proposal.
"I must commend the work of Ethan Adeyemi and Sophia Daniels," he announced before the entire class.
"This is one of the best presentations I have seen from first-year students."
The class applauded.
Sophia smiled shyly while Ethan whispered,
"We make a good team."
She nodded.
"We do."
Later that evening, Ethan accompanied Sophia back to her hostel as he usually did.
The campus was calm, with cool evening air replacing the afternoon heat.
Students walked in groups while others sat outside discussing lectures and laughing together.
As they reached the hostel entrance, Ethan stopped.
"Thank you."
Sophia looked puzzled.
"For what?"
"For being my friend."
She smiled warmly.
"I should be thanking you too."
"You've made university feel like home."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
There was a quiet understanding between them—one neither was ready to put into words.
As Sophia entered the hostel, she looked back once.
Ethan was still standing there, smiling.
She waved.
He waved back before turning toward the male hostel.
Neither of them realized that what had begun as an ordinary friendship was quietly becoming the foundation of a love story that would one day be tested by ambition, heartbreak, forgiveness, faith, and the unbreakable vows they would eventually make to each other.
