He couldn’t do it. Chance stared down at the motionless form of Morleigh Mayfield, his fist still clenched around the barrel of the pistol Morleigh had handed him before bending to open the cellar door. It had been the perfect opportunity, but at the last minute Chance found himself unable to actually kill the man. Instead, he used the butt of the pistol to render Morleigh unconscious. He wanted to be able to kill Morleigh, and wanted to be able to take pleasure in the killing, but hadn’t been able to do it. It was enough, Chance told himself as he tucked the pistol into the waistband of his trousers, that he’d found his brother.
