Chapter 7An Unfamiliar Beginning

1513 Words
The morning sunlight seeped through the gaps in the curtains, casting a soft glow on Si Han Shen's face. She stared at the gradually brightening sky outside the window, a mix of complex emotions welling up inside her. At that moment, she glanced at the alarm clock’s hands and listened to the bustling sounds of her mother in the living room, but she lacked the courage to speak. Today was her registration day at the vocational high school, yet no one would accompany her, nor would anyone offer her a word of encouragement. She had thought she would be filled with anticipation, only to find that what she felt was more a sense of unease. She slung her backpack over her shoulders, hesitated for a moment at the door, and heard her mother’s voice from the kitchen: “Leave early, don’t be late.” The tone was devoid of warmth, and with a faint response, Si Han Shen hurried out the door. Walking towards the bus stop, she kept recalling her three years in junior high—those sneers and taunts, the malicious bullying, the days that had caused her so much pain. Si Han Shen took a deep breath, trying to stop herself from dwelling on those memories. Today marked the beginning of a new life, at least, that’s what she wanted to tell herself. Beside the bus stop, she watched as the bus slowly pulled up and stopped in front of the platform. As the doors opened, she clutched her admission note a little tighter, boarded the bus, and found a seat by the window. The bus wasn’t crowded, mostly filled with people heading to work. During the hour-long journey, Si Han Shen occasionally looked out the window at the passing scenery. From high-rise buildings to flat roads and then to the gradually emerging crowds, the feeling of unease in her heart grew stronger. She imagined her upcoming life in vocational high school—whether it could truly be the fresh start she hoped for. She knew that the pain and memories of the past wouldn’t disappear just because she changed schools, but she still held onto some hope: a new environment, new classmates, perhaps it could bring her a sense of belonging, or at least no longer be treated with cold indifference. The bus stopped at the school gate, and the sound of the brakes brought her back to reality. She cautiously got off the bus, stood at the school entrance, and looked up at the large characters spelling out the school’s name, which shone particularly brightly in the morning sunlight. The school gate was bustling with activity, with new students and their parents gathered in small groups, carrying large bags and small, their faces filled with anticipation and curiosity. Si Han Shen's steps faltered as she stood among the crowd, feeling particularly alone. She took a deep breath, adjusted the straps of her backpack, and silently entered the school gate. Instead of rushing to register, she habitually scanned the surrounding faces, trying to determine if there was anyone she knew. She was already accustomed to this kind of vigilance. The memories of junior high were still vivid in her mind; she didn’t want to see those who had once hurt her. However, her heart sank when her gaze rested not far away, seeing a few familiar figures lining up at the registration desk. She recognized a few of them; they were her junior high schoolmates. Although they weren’t the worst of the bunch, their presence still made Si Han Shen feel uneasy. She quickly lowered her head, pretending to check the notice in her hand, and quickly avoided the crowd until she was sure she had no contact with them. She silently walked towards the bulletin board covered with new student class assignment information, trying to shift her focus to more important matters. Her fingers slid down the list, and Si Han Shen found her name among the dense thicket of names—Class 3, Senior High One. She suddenly felt relieved, and then she quickly scanned a few familiar names—they had all been assigned to other classes. Fortunately, this time she wouldn’t be in the same classroom with them. Walking along the corridor towards Class 3, Si Han Shen's steps became a little lighter. When she reached the classroom door, she stood for a while before mustering the courage to step through that door. The unfamiliar environment enveloped her—the neat desks and chairs, the blackboard illuminated by sunlight, the notice board on the wall not yet filled, and the unfamiliar faces. She found her seat, sat down cautiously, and kept her head down. Students entered, and the classroom gradually became lively. Some were talking, others were chatting with new classmates. Si Han Shen glanced around with her peripheral vision but never initiated a conversation with anyone. Soon, the headteacher entered, a gentle-looking middle-aged woman, dressed appropriately. She stood in front of the podium and said in a gentle tone: Hello, class, I am your headteacher, my name is Lin, and I will be leading you from now on. Welcome to Class 3 The headteacher’s tone slightly eased the atmosphere in the classroom. She continued: Today is just a simple registration, let’s get to know each other first! Each student will give a brief self-introduction, telling us your name, where you’re from, and your hobbies, so we can all get acquainted. Hearing the words “self-introduction,” Si Han Shen felt a wave of nervousness. She had always been afraid of speaking in front of a crowd, let alone in front of so many new classmates. She tried to appear calm, but her palms were already sweaty. She silently prayed that she wouldn’t make a mistake when it was her turn. One by one, the students stood up to introduce themselves, some with loud voices, exuding confidence. There were also those who were as nervous as her but tried to appear composed. When it was Si Han Shen's turn, she stiffly stood up, kept her head down, and with all her might, she uttered, “Hello, everyone, my name is Si Han Shen, I’m from…” Her voice was so soft it was almost inaudible. She quickly finished and sat down, trying to ignore the glances that came her way. Next, several students took the initiative to stand up and speak, and the atmosphere in the classroom gradually became more lively. Some began to tease each other, and others started chatting with their seatmates. Si Han Shen remained quiet, but the girl next to her took the initiative to speak to her: Hello, I’m Jia Zhou. What’s your name? Si Han Shen looked up, somewhat reserved, and replied, “I… my name is Si Han Shen.” “Nice to meet you!” Jia Zhou said with a smile, “We’re classmates now, let’s do our best together!” Si Han Shen was taken aback; it was a kind of goodwill she hadn’t felt in a long time, and even though it was just a brief sentence, it left her somewhat at a loss. Gradually, the atmosphere in the classroom became more relaxed. Jia Zhou and a few other new students chatted animatedly, and Si Han Shen listened quietly, sometimes being drawn into the conversation. Her responses were still cautious, but a long-lost smile gradually appeared on her face. After the registration, Si Han Shen chatted with Jia Zhou for a while and found her to be cheerful and approachable. This gave her a sense of long-lost relaxation and anticipation, emotions she hadn’t felt in a long time. She didn’t know what the future would hold, but at least for today, there was a glimmer of expectation in her heart. Maybe high school life will indeed be different. As Si Han Shen walked out of the school gate, the afterglow of the setting sun spread across the school wall, stretching her shadow long. Her steps became a little lighter, but her heart remained complex. The brief ease and laughter of the day were like long-lost sunshine, illuminating the deepest corners of her heart. She knew that a new school meant a new beginning, but the shadows of the past were not so easily erased. Those repressions and pains were still deeply buried in her heart, ready to surface at any inopportune moment. Nevertheless, she was willing to look forward and believe that this new environment might be different. Perhaps this time, she would meet true friends; perhaps this time, she would find her own place. Standing by the bus stop, she looked back at the gate of her new school. The images of her new classmates in the classroom and her chats with Jia Zhou flashed through her mind. These images intertwined into a subtle emotion, filling her with both anticipation and trepidation for the future. Her new high school life was about to unfold, and Si Han Shen had no idea whether more twists and turns or another warm journey of growth awaited her.
