Chapter Three

A Change of Plans

Cat and Maddie exited the elevator calling out for Caitlin and Sam. They got no answer. They shared a knowing smile.

“We both know where they are,” said Cat, “and what they are doing.”

They both snickered and headed for the bedroom.

“We’re back,” shouted Maddie. Still no answer.

The bedroom door was open, and they both went inside.

“There you are,” Cat said as she saw them under the sheet wrapped in each other’s arms.

“We’re not home, go away,” Caitlin told them.

“Ah, now isn’t that sweet, they are in bed, embracing, and don’t want company,” Maddie observed. “Well, that’s too bad.” She and Cat both jumped in the bed, Cat behind Caitlin, and Maddie next to Sam.

“He is mine, and you can’t have him,” Caitlin teased them.

“How do you feel about that, Sam,” Cat rejoined.

“I’m hers and nothing will ever keep us apart,” Sam continued the tease.

“Ah, shucks,” Cat answered, “and just when we have such good news.”

“What kind of good news?” Sam asked her.

“If you two will come up for air for a while, we’ll tell you,” Maddie answered.

“Oh, all right,” Caitlin loosened her grip on Sam, turned and rolled over on her back, so she could see them both. “What did Dr. Collins have to say?”

“Since I have all the symptoms of having a twin pregnancy, she wanted to do an ultrasound. I am at seven weeks, not five she said, and she thought she might find indicators that could confirm her suspicions of multiple fetuses. There would be no heartbeats or other indicators, but she might be able to resolve the amniotic sacs, and if there are two or more, we know. It might have been too early still, but she wanted to look,” Cat explained.

“What did she find?” Sam asked as he sat up and raised the head of the bed.

“There were two!” Cat told them joyfully. “We are going to have twins, everyone, probably fraternal twins based on the ultrasound.”

They hugged, laughing, and smiling at each other. It was wonderful news. Maddie already knew since she had been there at the examination, and she was showing her delight at the results and at the way Sam and Caitlin had taken it. There was joy all around.

“That’s wonderful,” Caitlin said as she hugged her.

Sam joined her. Cat began to cry softly. Her hormones and emotions took over for a moment. Sam kissed her tears away. Caitlin’s whispers in her ear calmed her and she hugged her back.

“Are you okay?” Sam asked her.

“Yes, my love,” Cat answered, “I am a little frightened, but so happy. I need you all even more than ever.”

They held her close and comforted her.

“It’s going to be all right, Cat,” Caitlin encouraged her.

“Yes, it is,” added Sam. “We will all be there for you. It’s exciting.”

Next, they turned to Maddie while Sam and Caitlin held her close.

“What happened with you, Maddie?” Sam wanted to know.

“My news is not as dramatic as Cat’s, but generally positive,” she began. “Dr. Collins cleared me as healthy and sees no physical reason I shouldn’t have a baby. She wants to make sure of my fertility and gave me permission to go off the pill permanently if I want to. If I do, she can check me out more completely when I begin to have my periods again.”

“That’s great, Maddie,” Caitlin was happy for her and hugged her. “What are you going to do?”

“Dr. Collins brought up an issue regarding the three of us all having Sam’s children,” Maddie revealed.

Cat already knew the issue since it affected her, but Sam and Caitlin had to know the doctor’s concerns.

Maddie continued, “Her concern is that we are planning to live together as a family and our children will be either half-brothers or half-sisters with the same father, but different mothers. She wanted to know if we have thought about when our offspring reach puberty, living so closely together. It has happened that such children have fallen in love with each other or, for some other reason, entered into s****l relationships.”

Everyone was quiet and said nothing.

Cat interjected, “I and my children are affected by this, obviously, and I am already pregnant for the first time.”

With some trepidation, Caitlin asked, “Did she make any suggestions?”

“She suggested that Maddie consider another father, either a surrogate or an anonymous sperm donor,” she explained, “but you are married to Sam and that is not an option for you.”

“It is not an option for me, either,” Maddie affirmed, “we will find another way.”

“All three of you, listen to me,” Sam directed. “I had not really thought about this until Caitlin and I wed, and Cat became pregnant. That this might occur became very real, and I have given it a great deal of consideration. There are ways we can avoid this until our children come of age. At that point, we will lose control almost entirely.”

“Then what do we do?” asked Caitlin.

“We make sure that our children know that they are brothers and sisters and we can raise them the right way, with morals and principles and knowing what is right and what is wrong. We must ensure that they understand s****l relationships and teach them how to handle them,” he said. “It might not be an easy thing to do, but if we want to live the lifestyle we have chosen, we must meet this challenge.”

“We go on, then?” asked Maddie.

“Yes, my dear Maddie, we go on,” he affirmed.

Caitlin felt relieved.

“I love you all, and even though I am wonderfully, happily married to your sister, Caitlin, you both are a part of our lives. Without you, we would be less than we are together,” he told them, “now come here and give me a kiss.”

Maddie was first and thanked him with her kiss. Cat was next, and her kiss was that of a mother-to-be kissing the father of her children. Caitlin waited until the others finished and they beckoned her to take her place beside him. Her kiss reflected the love and passion they had experienced a short while before. Maddie and Cat shared knowing glances as she kissed him.

“If there were any doubts about what you two did in our absence, they are gone now,” Cat joked.

Caitlin kept kissing him.

“Nope,” Maddie added, “no doubt whatsoever.”

“Do you think we can get some of that, Maddie?” Cat asked her.

“I don’t know,” she answered, “it all depends on whether Caitlin is going to keep him for herself or let us have a go.”

Caitlin ended her kiss and gave him another brief follow up.

“On one condition,” she answered.

“And that would be?” Maddie asked.

“He is mine, but he is also ours. I am his, but I am also yours. We just had the most wonderful love making experience ever, but my desires didn’t get satisfied completely. I want both of you, too. First, I need to go to the little girls’ room,” she sat up and got out of bed heading for the bathroom. As she left, she looked back at them and said, “No fighting over him. Remember, I will be back.”

Sam needed to visit the facilities, too, and he got up and told them not to go anywhere and that he would be back quickly as Cat and Maddie exchanged knowing glances.

“Do you detect a change around here?” Cat asked her.

“Oh, yes, definitely,” answered Maddie. “What gives?”

“They must have had one hell of an encounter,” Cat observed.

“What was that Caitlin said about a love making experience?” Maddie asked.

“Let’s ask them when they get back, shall we?” Cat suggested.

“Oh, yes,” replied Maddie, “I am dying to know what’s going on.”

Cat agree with her. In a few minutes, Sam and Caitlin returned. They had their arms around each other and were sporting huge grins. Caitlin was resting her head on Sam’s shoulder.

“Ok, you two,” Maddie began, “what’s going on here?”

“What do you mean, Maddie?” Caitlin asked.

“Something has changed with you two. Cat and I both noticed it.”

Caitlin and Sam smiled at each other and Cat and Maddie knew something was up.

“You noticed,” Sam said. “A lot has happened today while you two were away.”

Cat and Maddie sat up giving him their full attention.

“Care to tell us about it?” Maddie asked him.

“Come over here beside me, Caitlin, we will tell them together,” he said.

Caitlin moved beside him, and he put his arm around her shoulders and gave her a quick kiss.

“We actually spent several hours together in bed just cuddling and talking about how we came to be,” he said. “It’s really a delightful story.”

“We explored how and when we fell in love,” Caitlin continued, “neither of us knew about the other one. I have loved Sam since I was fifteen and he has loved me all that time. He did everything he could think of to spend time with me even though he never let his feelings show. If he had, I would have slept with him even back then.”

“When she turned sixteen, I was totally infatuated with her even though I was in my mid-twenties. She would come over here or I would go to see her and Granny, and we would work on her studies and other things in a perfectly innocent way.”

“It was only when you two came into our lives that Sam was able to express his feelings for me. You became my friend and invited me to come over here and join you. You showed me so much that I needed to know and loved me deeply. I fell in love with both of you, too. Strange thing is that I thought I had lost him to you two wonderful women.”

“If it hadn’t been for you, I might have never have acted on my feelings for Caitlin. My feelings for you, Cat, and Maddie, grew even more intense as I saw the three of you together and how you loved one another. Thanks for that,” Sam said as he beckoned them to come give him a hug.

“How are things with us then, Sam, with the four of us?” Cat asked.

“My dear Cat, you are carrying my children, and I love you and am still in love with you. I will be the best father and partner I can be, and I will love you as long as I draw breath,” he comforted her fears.

“Maddie, my love, I love you more than you can know, and I will be the proud father of your children and the best father to them and the best partner I can be to you. You see, I am falling in love with you, beautiful one, although I only realized it recently.”

“That is our opportunity and our challenge,” said Caitlin, “to make this work with the four of us.”

“I have a question,” Maddie spoke up. “How would you guys feel if I took Dr. Collins’s advice, and either went through insemination by an unknown, but well-screened donor, or found someone else, exclusively for me?”

There was total silence for a few moments while everyone considered her question.

Caitlin spoke first, “Finding a sperm donor might be okay, but I love you Maddie. I don’t want you to leave.”

Cat agreed with Caitlin, “I am in love with you, Maddie, and I don’t want you to go either.”

“What about you, Sam?” Maddie asked pointedly.

He amazed the girls when they saw him shed a single tear. He replied to her emotionally.

“It would break my heart to lose you, dear Maddie,” he told her. “We are family and I want us to be together for all time.”

He reached for her and embraced her tenderly. She began to cry, too.

Through her tears, she explained her question. “Someone has asked me to go out with him. I am considering his invitation. With what Dr. Collins said today, it might not be a bad idea.”

Her three lovers did not believe what they heard. They had no idea.

“Do we know this person?” Caitlin asked.

“I was going to tell you, I promised him I would tell you, but I didn’t,” Maddie replied. “It’s Mack, our favorite bartender at Manny’s.”

“He is a knockout, Maddie,” Cat said, “and he has always had eyes for you.”

“I need a drink,” Sam said, and he started to get out of bed. He put on his robe and left the room. Maddie was bawling. She knew she had hurt him. Cat and Caitlin stayed with her.

“He will be all right, Maddie, he wants what is best for you,” Caitlin tried to console her, “it’s a guy thing and I have seen it before, just not with Sam.”

“He loves you, Maddie, we all do,” Cat just told her the truth.

“But I feel like a third wheel. He married you, Caitlin, and he is in love with you, Cat, and has been for some time. I just wonder where that leaves me. I am so confused.”

“This is something we three will have to work out,” said Caitlin, “I am glad he left. If there is one thing we do not need, it is an excess of testosterone.”

Cat laughed loudly, and Maddie snickered at Caitlin’s comment through her tears.

“I have to know, Caitlin, did the two of you actually lie together in bed and just talk, for hours, and not have s*x?” Maddie wanted to know.

“Yes, Maddie, we did. We talked for hours and uncovered things neither of us had any idea about. It was magical,” Caitlin answered. “We gained a new perspective on our relationship. I recommend it to both of you. Find out what makes things tick with him and with us, too.”

“When we came in, you were so close both physically and spiritually,” Cat said, “you looked like lovers who had just had sex.”

“Very observant, Cat,” replied Caitlin, “we had, and it was not just s*x. After our talk, we made wonderful love to each other. It was so intense and so tender that we discovered a new part of our love.”

“How did all that come about?” Maddie asked.

“He brought me to bed and kissed me all over and I do mean all over. I asked him for a kiss and tasted my juices on his lips then took his c**k in my hand and told him I wanted it now. He agreed but first, he wanted to tell me a story. It was about a man in his mid-twenties who fell in love with a fifteen-year-old girl and what each of them did. The story was our story.”

“Oh, my,” said Maddie.

“Back then, neither of us knew how the other one felt. I fell for him early on and he fell for me, but because I was so young, he found other ways for us to be together. He mentored me, tutored me, and took care of me and Granny. When I turned sixteen, I wanted him more than anything in the world. I told him I would have slept with him then if he had asked. I loved him even then, and he loved me, too. When I turned eighteen, he tried to stay away, that is until you two came along. He loves you very much, you know.”

“Then he took us to the marina that day just to meet you?” Cat asked.

“Yes. He had no idea how it would work out, but when we became friends and you invited me to come visit, he delighted in the prospect. We became four,” Caitlin explained, “I had no idea until today what was on his mind and, as they say, the rest is history.”

There was a quiet pause as the girls reflected on what Caitlin had told them. The story had an impact on them as they came to understand what had happened. Cat embraced Caitlin and gave her a kiss.

“That’s a beautiful story, my dear. I have often wondered about how this all came to be and now we know,” Cat said as she continued her embrace.

“His story freed me of any reservations I might have had about us. I loved him today without holding anything back. I know he loves me and will, in his words, while he still breathes. When I told you that he was mine and you couldn’t have him, there was a great deal of truth in that, but of course he loves you two dearly and wants us to stay together.”

Maddie was weeping quietly again as she listened to the story. Caitlin offered an embrace, but Maddie pulled back. Caitlin and Cat shared looks of bewilderment at her reluctance. What was going on in that pretty mind of hers?

“I don’t know what to do,” Maddie said finally.

“You don’t have to do anything, love,” answered Cat, “at least not right now. We are all here for you and will love and support you, whatever you decide.”

“I have decided some things already,” she said. “I am not going off birth control now. Having a baby would just complicate things. I need to know where I am and how I feel about things before taking on motherhood.”

“I think that is very wise,” agreed Cat.

“I also want to go out with Mack,” she added.

“Not another girl?” Caitlin asked.

“No,” she answered, “for now the only females I want in my life are you two.”

“Would you share your reasons for wanting to date Mack?” Cat asked.

“Until Sam came along, I never was very interested in men, although I dated several. None of them really caught my fancy. Sam is different, but I only get one third of him. I want to find out what it is like to have someone all to myself.”

“Even I don’t have all of him even though he is my husband,” Caitlin observed. “We all share him, and you have us Maddie, as well as Sam. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”

“Certainly, it does dear lovers, and I love you dearly, but there is this overriding question in my mind that I need to answer.”

“And you think you can answer that question by dating someone else?” Cat asked her.

“I see no other way, dear Cat.”

“Will you stay with us for a while and think it over before you do anything?” Caitlin suggested.

“Yes, I will, Caitlin, and I will discuss it with all of you until I am sure what I want to do,” she agreed.

“What are you going to tell Sam?” Cat raised the delicate question.

“I am going to ask for his guidance and hope for his approval of whatever I decide,” she replied. “I think I might go back to my apartment in the city for a while, just to try to work through some of these issues.”

“Would you like to stay at my place?” Cat offered.

“That’s very good of you, Cat,” she responded, “I’ll consider it. It might be a promising idea.”

Cat reached for her to give her a hug and she did not pull away. She let Cat envelop her in her arms and Cat kissed her as Maddie began to weep again. Caitlin joined their embrace. Never had the three of them felt closer. Together, they went to find Sam.
