Chapter 8

1957 Words
Mateo’s POV The sun peered through my blinds waking me up. I checked the time on my phone, still too early, I thought and covered myself again. I didn’t even make past to five minutes before my phone rung. “You’re still asleep, aren’t you?” “Well now I’m not,” I groan as I sat up. “Hilarious Mateo. Tell me you’re ready? I’m almost at your house,” Nathan said. “If I say no are you gonna turn around?” I asked wanting to go back to sleep. I was tired since I came back so late from the office and the nightmares that haunt me nearly every night didn’t give me a single chance to rest. “You forgot,” he stated. It sounded more of a question. “About what?’ I questioned. “The party in the evening? For my friend’s little sister?” Nathan asked and it took me a while to remember. Why the hell did I promise that I’ll go with him? “Can I back out now?” I asked even though I knew he’d deny me the pleasure of sleeping in today. “You know, you’re really funny in the morning when you ask me stupid questions,” he said with a laugh. I pulled the covers aside. “Let yourself in.” I cut the call and got into the shower. I turned the shower to as cold as possible and stood under it. I can’t remember a time where I felt the cold. It was impossible for me. Trust me I tried every means possible, but nothing worked. I even laid in the snow naked, but the snow just melted around me. I am a gifted. There are not so many of us, and we keep ourselves hidden but we know about each other. Compared to other humans, we’re a bit more special. We have abilities, some that either arise from the elementals, and others are deviants, they arise from the four main elements but are weaker compared to elementals. Deviants can only control their deviant power, but elementals can even control deviant powers. If an elemental becomes a fully gifted, they are able to manipulate the deviations within their element. Only elementals can become fully gifted. Since they are only a four of them at a time they are considered invincible. I was an elemental and as you’ve guessed it, fire was my gift. Sometimes it was hard to deal with it. When I was young, small things would make me lose control and I’d end up destroying things. My older brother, who had more control over his gift than me, helped me control it. I think he got me the gold bracelet too. It was always on my hand. It helped with control. After my shower I got dressed and found Nathan waiting for me in my sitting room. “Do I really need to accompany you shopping? It’s annoying.” “You promised. Besides, you could use a few new accessories. You need it way more than me,” he whispered under his breath, but I heard him. “There’s literally no difference between you and a girl. Need me to buy you knew make-up Nathan?” I asked with a smirk. “Since you asked, I’m a little bit low on foundation,” he grinned, and I glared at him. I took out a slice of bread from the fridge and switched on my coffee maker. “I swear to God if you woke me this early for make-up, I’ll burn your ass to the ground.” “I didn’t. And this is a fine ass no man would want if its crisp,” he smiled, and I wanted to punch it off his face. I was already quite irritable since I didn’t get enough sleep and his cheeky attitude was making it worse. Once we reached the mall I hanged back as Nathan bought all idiotic things. I wasn’t interested in anything he was buying. It all didn’t make any sense to me. “Oh! I just remembered, there’s something I really need to buy,” he said rushing out of our current store and wading through the crowd to go where he wanted. “Nathan, slow down,” I called out trying to reach him. I was too irritated to be doing this. Struggling in a mall with all these people around me. I was getting annoyed since I had lost him. “Where the hell did he go?” I cursed out lowly. I drew in a deep breath and kept on walking in the direction I saw him heading towards before someone bumped into me. “Watch it. Are you blind or something?” I snapped at her without even thinking. I was already mad as it is. She froze before a peculiar expression was on her face. She looked as if she was trying to remember something. I just wanted her to move so that I could leave. Nathan was already high on my hit list, if she didn’t move, I would add her to it. She looked up at me and met my gaze. “Mateo,” she softly whispered her eyes glassy as if she was about to start crying. “Mateo, I thought… you can’t be here,” she breathed out. What the hell is this? How does she know my name? “How the hell do you know my name?” I asked. A pained expression was on her face. Was I supposed to know here? I know I don’t sleep around as much anymore but I didn’t think I had ever slept with her. “Listen, I don’t give a f**k who you are. Just get out of my way,” I said angrily because she wasn’t moving. I tried to go around her, but she grabbed my hand not letting me leave. “Mateo what happened to you?” she asked. I grabbed her hand and slammed her back on the wall pinning her on it. People stopped to look at us thinking it was a fight, but I couldn’t give a damn. I hated women who think they have control over me or something. I dug my fingers into her skin. I was getting mad. I could feel the fire rising within me, but I didn’t care is she burned or not. “Goddamn it woman! What the hell is your problem? I don’t know you. I’m tired of this pranks you bitches are trying to pull off. I’m not giving you a single dime so f**k off!” I cursed at her and walked away. I knew if I stayed there any longer, I’d just get even more mad and burn her. At least now the most she’ll get is just burns on her wrist. f**k, I was too mad to go on looking for Nathan. The moment I reached my car my head started spinning. A nostalgic feeling washed over me, and I felt as if a cold body was pressed up against me. Holding me close with a promise to never let go. I clutched my head and tried to shake off the feeling. It was ridiculous. In all my life I’ve never felt the cold. I drew in deep breaths before I got into the car. “Hey where are you?” Nathan asked after I picked up his call. My head had stopped spinning but the stupid nostalgic feeling was still overwhelming. “In the car. Get over here or I’ll leave you,” I hanged up and placed my head on the wheel. I couldn’t understand what was going on. I didn’t recognize this feeling. It was overwhelming. When he got into the car, I told him that I didn’t want to go to the dinner, but he refused to let me back out. I drove us back to my house and he made me promise that I wouldn’t ditch him. When I reached the party, I said hi to people before I went to the bar. That woman’s face was still in my head, and it was bothering me. Why the f**k couldn’t I forget her? She wasn’t that important to me. I didn’t even know her. I drank from my glass just wanting to get rid of this stupid feeling that had refused to leave me since morning. “Mateo, get over here,” I heard Nathan calling for me. Sighing I stood up and walked to where he was. The woman he was talking to turned around and I met her gaze. It was her. Was she following me around or something? God! What the hell does she want from me? “What the f**k are you doing here? You just don’t get a hint, do you?” I snapped at her quite irritated. I’m sure my face said so. “you two know each other?” Nathan asked. I glared at her and said without any second thoughts, “no.” “yes.” We both said at the same time. I looked at her. How does she know me? Why go through all this just to get close to me? What is she after? “Listen, I don’t f*****g know you. Yet here you are following me around like a little w***e. This is a low blow even for a desperate b***h like you.” It was mean, and I felt like I was doing the wrong thing, but it had to be done. She met my eyes one last time and her teary eyes made me feel like I was being pierced by thousand needles. “Excuse me,” she said to Nathan and walked away towards the balcony. “What the f**k is wrong with you?” Nathan yelled at me. “What did you expect me to do? She’s been following me around like I owe her something.” “That was the main guest for the party, Thorn’s little sister. Now you go apologize to her and stop being such a f*****g d**k!” Nathan said angrily and walked away shaking his head as he muttered, “what the hell’s gotten into you Mateo?” I wish I could answer him. I didn’t know. She even turned my best friend against me in only a few minutes of talking to each other. I walk towards the balcony and step out. I closed the doors behind me and looked around. She looked up at me, her cheeks stained with tears, and something flashed through my mind. I was seated on a bed with her in my arms. She was crying and I comforted her softly as if she was a child. “I know it’s been so long Mateo, but I miss them. I’m all alone now,” she said in between tears. “you’re not alone Carlie. You have Gordon, you have me. You’ll always have me by your side. I’ll never leave your side,” I placed a kiss on her forehead before taking her hand. We sat down on the floor, and I held her in my arms as she straddled me. I pulled her closer to me before I engulfed us in my flames. It was a light orange-yellow flame. She leaned in closer to me and rubbed her cheek against my chest. “it’s warm,” she muttered. The color of the fire is determined with the emotions I am feeling at the moment. And at that moment, I wanted nothing more than to make her know that I would always be by her side, keeping her warm each and every day and take away all her pain.
