“Mateo, I thought… you can’t be here,” I breathed out. Where was Thorn? I felt like I was having a panic attack.
“How the hell do you know my name?” he asked. I felt like I had been stabbed. He didn’t remember me. Did those years we spent together mean nothing to him? “Listen, I don’t give a f**k who you are. Just get out of my way,” he said angrily. I grabbed his hand not wanting him to leave. “Mateo what happened to you?” I asked not wanting to accept that he didn’t know me. He grabbed my hand and slammed my back on the wall pinning me on it. People stopped to look at us thinking it was a fight, but he didn’t care. His fingers dug into my skin, and I could feel the fire on his hands. It was just how his flames felt. “Goddamn it woman! What the hell is your problem? I don’t know you. I’m tired of this pranks you bitches are trying to pull off. I’m not giving you a single dime so f**k off!” he cursed at me and walked away. I stood there dazed before I felt something jump in my stomach. I clutched my stomach and watched him walk away. I drew in deep breath trying to get rid of my shock before I made my way through the crowd. I needed to find Thorn. I had to find Thorn or else I would break down. I collapsed in his arms the moment I saw him and fainted. When I woke up it was in the evening, and I was in hospital. Thorn was by my side holding my hand.
“Hey,” I said groggily as I sat up slowly.
“What happened Carlie? I was scared,” he stood up and hugged me. I hugged him back needing him next to me. Faith was asleep on the couch. It seems that she had tagged along. I smiled glad she cared for me. Turning to Thorn, “I saw him. Mateo. How is he alive Thorn? Why is he here?” I asked feeling the tears in my eyes. “He didn’t remember me. He forgot all about those years we lived together and now I feel like…,” I place my hand on my stomach vaguely recognizing the feeling I felt after he walked away, “he has no clue about me Thorn.”
“I didn’t want you to find out this way,” he ran his hand over his face and looked at me. “You knew? Since when?” I questioned feeling a bit betrayed he never mentioned it all the past ten months. “A few years before you woke up. You weren’t ready for it.” Sighing he sat back down. “I saw Mateo by accident one day when I had gone to see one of my friends. I didn’t expect to see him there. When we were introduced to each other, he didn’t even know me. He didn’t recognize and I thought maybe he had forgotten us. I planted one of my flowers to spy on him and see if I could get any information. I can tell you one thing that I’m certain of. He is your Mateo. He’s still a gifted and fire is his attribute. Just like in the past. Sometimes I see as if he tries to remember you but then something blocks it, and he stops. I tried using gases to get it out of him, but I only managed to get a glimpse of what happened before he disappeared. Someone took him. Someone really powerful, I’ve never met a gifted who can warp through time but the one who took him could.”
I listened to him not understanding what anyone would want to do with Mateo. Why take him away? Why make him forget all about us? It didn’t make sense. “How do I get him back?” I asked Thorn.
“I don’t know darling, but we’ll figure that one out together.” I squeezed his hand in mine before the doctor walked in. “How are you feeling little Carlie?”
I smiled at the doctor, “Attis,” I say nostalgically happy to see a familiar face. “How’ve you been?” I asked him. “Great. I found out I could find more gifted in hospitals, so I became a doctor,” Attis explained. He was also nearly as old as Thorn. Maybe even older. He was the one who made gold bracelets for gifted so that they’ll be able to control their powers. His power was the metal element, a deviant of the earth element, but he could also use his power on the bracelet and allow people to control their own powers. It was like a failsafe of sort. It helps you control your powers and if you’re about to lose control, it takes in your excess energy so that you don’t hurt yourself and the people around you.
“So, you faint today out of shock but have yet to find if there are any complications that arouse from it. I can’t quite get a clear image at the moment,” Attis said slowly. “What?” Thorn asked. “How can we not know what’s wrong? She just can’t collapse out of the blue. I know it hasn’t been long since she woke up but still…” he tried to ask thinking how it was possible for her to be sick or even worse after all these years. “I don’t know how Thorn; I just know we can’t tell right now. Do you want to stay for checkups?” he asked. I looked at Attis, “can I get discharged instead? I still have a party to attend,” I joked lightly wanting to get rid of this feeling I had. “Yeah, you just need an iv drip and then you’re good to go. We can put the checkups for later.”
“Are you sure you still want to go to the party?” Thorn asked me. “I need the distraction, don’t I?”
I walked into the ballroom with Thorn holding his arm and Faith on his left. I was wearing a long red dress that had a slit reaching my mid thighs. I had worn glossy black heels that matched perfectly with the dress. My brown hair was pinned on my right and it fell in curls on my left side. My diamond earrings glittered beautifully in the light. Faith was wearing a petite blue dress that stopped slightly above her knees. The dress was tight around her waist and flowed perfectly over her legs. Her blond hair was straight and parted in the middle. She looked adorable. Thorn was wearing a black suit with a blue necktie. They looked like such a cute couple that I felt slightly jealous. But I was happy for him. He was finally trying to find someone and not just having one-night stands. After Helen, I was worried than Thorn would never try to find someone to spend his life with, but it seems like he had taken a liking to Faith. That was a good sign. I glanced around the room in awe of its beauty. The room looked grand with its gold walls reflecting the light gently across the room. Tables with food were arranged on one wall creating a colorful picture. An ice sculpture stood on the center of a table with bite-size food. The rest of the tables were arranged near the walls leaving the middle of the room empty giving people enough space to socialize. There were so many people, and I knew none of them.
Turning to Thorn, “how do you feel walking in with two beautiful ladies in your arms?” I asked him with a smile. “Like one lucky bastard,” he winked at Faith and a small blush settles on her cheeks. We all took a glass of wine from the waiter, and we moved around the room, Thorn introducing me to his friends. They were nice, they all worked in big companies and the like. Most of them offered me a job when they learnt I was looking for one as an auditor.
“Now this is a face I don’t want you to forget darling. Nathan this is my little sister Carlyna, Carlie this is Nathan a good friend of mine. He is quite gifted,” he grinned at me, and I understood what he meant. “I’ll leave you two to talk. Come with me sweetheart,” he said to Faith and walked away from her.
“I never knew Thorn had a sister,” Nathan said. “that’s what most people said tonight,” I say with a laugh. “I haven’t been around for long. I was away so I guess he didn’t want to say anything.”
“And here I thought he was hiding your beauty away from all of us, he is quite overprotective,” Nathan smiled at me. “Very,” I laugh. We talked and it was quite easy to talk to Nathan. He was a gifted to. That was what Thorn was implying to. His gift was light. That was a pretty gift. I also told him I was gifted, and he was surprised.
“it’s quite rare to have siblings who are both gifted. Only one or two are ever born. And to be able to reach past twenty, you’re quite more amazing than Thorn led on to,” he complimented me. “you’re too kind Nathan, but Thorn and I aren’t blood related. I’m adopted.” In the past that was a really hard thing to say but now after getting my emotion in control, it was a bit easier. “Here I was about to think I was lucky enough to meet two gifted siblings. Actually, the one I know is around here somewhere,” he looked around before calling out to someone behind me, “Mateo, get over here.” My heart started beating faster, he couldn’t be here, could he? There was no way. But there he was walking towards me. His eyes met mine and I saw his facial expression change into one of disgust and anger. Why would he look at me like that?
“What the f**k are you doing here? You just don’t get a hint, do you?” he snapped. “you two know each other?” Nathan asked. Mateo glared at me before he spoke, “no.” “yes.” We both said at the same time. “Listen, I don’t f*****g know you. Yet here you are following me around like a little w***e. This is a low blow even for a desperate b***h like you.”
It felt like someone was stabbing my heart with every word he said. How could he insult me this much? I need to leave, I need air. “Excuse me,” I said to Nathan and walked away towards the balcony. I needed to be outside.
“What the f**k is wrong with you?” I hear Nathan yelled but I ignored them and stepped out into the dark night. I closed the doors behind and sat down on one of the chairs as my tears streamed out.
