Chapter 6

The next ten months passed by in a blur. Thorn had already taught me how to drive. I had finished my crash course online and I practically felt like I could start working. Thorn dealt with all my documents, and I got all my certificates and cards. I looked at my ID, Carlyna Lelia Razner. He hadn’t changed my middle name and last name. I appreciated that. I didn’t want to forget my maiden name. “So, we’re gonna go shopping tomorrow. When my friends at work learnt that I have a little sister who came back from studying abroad, they decided to throw a welcome back party for you,” Thorn said as he opened a can of beer from the fridge. “Your friends want to meet me? You told them about me?” “Only last week. I needed you to be ready and besides, this is a good way for you to enter society.” “Yeah right,” I rolled my eyes, “and I don’t think they’ll believe I’m your sister. I’m way to young and prettier than you,” I grinned at him and took out leftover pizza from the fridge. I heated it up and place two slices on my plate. “Real funny Carlie,” he said. “I’m only stating the truth.” We teased each other a bit more before it was time to sleep. Thorn woke me up early the next morning so that we could have enough time shopping at the mall and then get ready for my party that night. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t mind the clothes Thorn got me, they just didn’t feel like me. I got ready and went downstairs to eat breakfast. “Ready to have a fun day with your charming brother?” “Charming? Like that’s a word I’ll use to describe you,” I snorted out. “I’ll have you know many women are trying to bed me,” “please, your love life isn’t something to brag about Thorn.” “I’m sure I have to, considering how celibate you were in that casket,” he added with a smirk. I threw an ice ray at his mouth to shut him up. “And now I don’t have to hear you,” I said and went back to my cereal. He glared at me for a couple of seconds before making weeds grow in my bowl. I jumped up shocked to see my breakfast destroyed. I looked at him and I could see his smirk in his eyes. “You just can’t get a hint Thorn,” I froze his hands on the table and dumped my cereal on his head. The milk trickled down his face and I bit back a laugh. I took out my phone and snapped a photo of him. One thing I liked about this century was that I could save embarrassing moments like this with just a click of a finger. “There, now you look like crap,” I smirk at him and left the kitchen laughing as he struggled to escape. He finally managed to get out from the kitchen when the ice thawed out enough for him to use his strength to break free. He found me seated on the couch waiting for him. “When did you learn how to do that? Throw ice?” he asked me. I drew in a deep breath as I remembered that darkness that had been my home. “I spent a really long time with myself Thorn. Even if it was unconsciously, I still managed to learn how to concentrate. I had to otherwise I would lose myself just like I lost him.” “And I didn’t freeze?” “You weren’t meant to. I can control the ice now. I know how cold it needs be before you die. I feel like we finally became one. Not just human and gift but finally a fully gifted,” I explained. A fully gifted was a gifted who could control their powers perfectly. They could alter the strength of their power and use a different of attacks either long range or close range. Most gifted who become fully gifted have lived for a long time. This time is required to harness their powers and make them their own. Make them a part of their souls. That was the only way to become fully gifted. Though only elementals had the power to become fully gifted. I wonder how I managed it though, I’m just a deviant. “I’m glad it helped Carlyna,” it felt great hearing him call me by my new name. It was as if he was acknowledging that I had become a new person. Thorn took another bath and changed his clothes. We drove out of the garage in one of the many cars we owned. Since I still had my parent money and more considering all the interest it had accumulated, I could stay without working and still live a luxurious life. But I wanted to work, I needed to do something, or I would die of boredom just staying in the house all day and just spending money. We reached the mall after half an hour. Considering how far our estate was from the town, we took quite a short time. Getting into the mall, he dragged me into one of the stores. He called for one of the ladies working there. “Help her pick out anything she wants. I’ll wait for you at the cashier darling,” he said his accent more prominent than usual. I shook my head and smiled at him. He was such a flirt. “Hi, I’m Faith.” “Carlyna.” “that’s a really pretty name,” she said nicely. “Thanks,” I replied. “Your boyfriends’ pretty nice too,” she said with a small blush on her cheeks. I chuckled thinking about how adorable she was. “You mean my brother,” I corrected as she led me to the tops section. “Oh!” Faith exclaimed her blush deepening. “I didn’t mean to…” “It’s okay,” I tell her with a smile. “Well, what do you like?” she asked. “I’m not quite sure. Can you show me a couple of things then I chose from there?” I asked her. “Sure.” Faith and I picked out clothes from every part of the store. I tried out most of them liking the clothes she brought. It seemed she understood my style very fast. We talked as I tried on the clothes and during that short time that I was shopping, I took a liking to Faith. She was the first person I had met after waking up. It cheered me up that people hadn’t changed as much as I had feared. We headed back to the cashier with a boat load of clothes that I had fancied. “This is less than I expected,” Thorn said before he added, “but we’re going to other shops so its fine. Can you ring this up for us sweetheart?” he asked Faith. She blushed bright red as she worked the register avoiding Thorn’s gaze. I smacked his arm and he just smiled at me. “Hey Faith, what time do they let you off?” I asked. I had enjoyed her company and she knew more than me on what was the best type of material to choose. I wanted her to help me with my shopping. “At around five.” “Thorn, tell the manager to let her off for the day. I’d prefer going shopping with a girl other than my older brother.” “You dear sister, are high maintenance.” He walked away and Faith turned to me. “Can he do that?” “Yeah. Do you want to join me?” “If it gets me out of here, I’m in.” “you’re free for the day Faith,” Thorn said as he came back. “Yes!” she jumped up excitedly. Handing Thorn my bags, I got out hand in hand with Faith. “Take them to the car will you brother. Unless you want to join us inside Victoria Secret,” I raised an eyebrow at him daring him to join us. “I know when I’m not needed. I’ll wait in the car.” “That was almost mean.” “And you like him,” I said as I looked around the shop. “No, I don’t,” Faith denied but the blush on her cheeks said it all. “Really? You turned into a tomato the minute he called you sweetheart,” I said laughing. Faith glared at me. “I won’t tell him,” I raised my hands up in surrender. She let out a sigh of relief before I added cheekily, “you will darling.” “What!” “you’ll tell him,” I repeated myself. “I don’t think that’s a good idea Carlyna,” she said picking out a few clothes. “Call me Carlie, it’s easier.” “Besides, he… I don’t think he likes me.” “Trust me, he was totally flirting with you,” I don’t know exactly why I told her that, but it felt like Faith was a child at heart. I think that’s why I kind of cared for her. I never really cared for other people other than the two of them. Maybe the time I spent frozen did something to my heart. I guess it was still too early to know if that was it or not. “This is the first time I’ve had fun like this with someone. Even if we’re still kind of strangers.” “Then let’s not be. Friends?” I asked her. “Friends.” Faith smiled at me, and I could see how pretty she was. “Smile a bit more. That will make Thorn fall for you even faster,” I teased her, and she blushed beet red. We swapped phones and got each other’s numbers. We kept on shopping talking as if we had been friends for the past couple of years for the entire morning. “Lunch?” “Yes please, I’m starved,” Faith said patting her stomach. “let’s take this to the car and call Thorn.” She nodded her head, and we went to the parking lot. “Are you done?” he asked us. “Yeah. We were going for lunch now.” “Great, I could use something to eat. I’m completely worn out.” “Doing what? Lazing your fat ass on the seat?” I asked. “Were you checking out my ass little sister?” he asked mischievously. Sometimes it was hard to believe how old he was considering how he acted. “Ewe! How could you?” I asked and pushed him towards Faith. “You don’t flirt with family you idiot.” He laughed and started talking to Faith. I walked a few paces behind them. I wanted them to talk. If my brother still had his game, he would invite her to the party tonight. Watching them my mind went back to Mateo. The man I had fallen in love with. The man who had been my everything and then made me know the meaning of pain. He was the main reason I had iced myself. To say the truth, he was the entire reason. I felt like I couldn’t live on without seeing his face anymore. That life didn’t matter anymore, and I would be better off dead than alive. I was quite confused back then. My mind dwelling in the past and not in the present I bumped into someone. I was about to say sorry before he spoke. “Watch it. Are you blind or something?” he snapped at me. My breath got stuck in my throat. I couldn’t forget that voice. Even after all these years, his voice would always be the first thing I would recognize. I looked up at him not ready to believe that he was standing right in front of me. “Mateo,” I said softly feeling the tears teasing my eyes.
